Plot: When the evil magician Sokurah (Torin Thatcher) shrinks Princess Parisa (Kathryn Grant) to roughly half the size of a Barbie doll, only one thing can restore her: the egg of a Roc. The Roc, of course,...( read more read more... ) is a gigantic bird that lives on the remote island of Colossa. Sinbad (Kerwin Mathews) hires a crew of mutiny-minded convicts and sets sail, Sokurah in tow, but runs afoul of a fire-breathing dragon, a very ticked off Cyclops, and an equally crabby two-headed mutant Roc. This swashbuckling adventure was the first installment of the Sinbad films, and decades later it still has the power to hold viewers spellbound. Thatcher is terrific as the sinister, shaven-headed Sokurah, mugging perfectly for the camera, and Mathews is suitably dashing as Sinbad.

As in all Sinbad films, though, the real stars are the Dynamation creations of Ray Harryhausen. The art of cinematic special effects has taken quantum leaps since 1958, which makes it so amazing that his work still looks as fine as it does. Harryhausen creates a world of fantasy where dragons and grotesque one-eyed humanoids battle to the death, one where it's very easy for adults to suspend their disbelief and watch the action with the wonder of a child. Seventh Voyage not only set the stage for further Sinbad adventures, but was a landmark film in the fantasy genre, opening doors for sword-and-sandal Hercules epics and countless other excursions. Few films, though, have the artistry that Ray Harryhausen's effects display in this movie. For great escapist fare for kids and adults alike, look no further than the first Sinbad film. --Jerry Renshaw

Harryhausen shows off his claymation yet again with this little masterpiece as always the signature skeleton is around to show the true talent of a special effects genius.

I like these type of adventure fantasy stories, this is one of the better Sinbad's out there. This film has some great work by Harryhausen.

I honestly thought I hadn't seen this Sinbad movie, but childhood memories came flooding back as soon as I put it on. In particular, I remembered the little princess visiting the sulky boy genie in the lamp, and also how inconsolable I'd been as a kid when Sinbad's crew killed the poor baby Roc bird ("Awww, bless! Waaaaahhh!!!!!!!!!!"). Colourful but flatly directed, the stellar contributions of composer Bernard Herrmann and stop-motion effects genius Ray Harryhausen give "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" a touch of class it doesn't really deserve. Of the cast, only Torin Thatcher, as the evil magician Sokurah, Richard Eyer, as the genie, and Mrs Bing Crosby (Kathryn Grant), as Princess Parisa, deliver the goods; Kerwin Matthews is hands down the dreariest seafarer ever to point a scimitar at a plasticine monster. Harryhausen's swordfighting skeleton anticipates his wonderful work on "Jason & the Argonauts".

Excellent film if ever there was one. Truly a classic in both action, adventure and stop animation. If you love any of those, then this is a must.

Almost everything about this old-school adventure film exudes charm. The story is well written and acted, although it may not be one of the deepest stories ever filmed. Plus, the timeless efforts of special-effects icon Ray Harryhausen are on full display here. Watching this movie guarantees that one will have a good time.

Must-see material for all Ray Harryhausen fans. Great stop-motion characters here, including the Cyclops, a fire-breathing dragon and the legendary two-headed Roc. Be on the lookout for an eye-catching performance by a very young Richard Eyer as the precocious little genie. This is a fantasy film by which all others are judged. Good stuff!

The focus is not so much on Sinbad but on everything else - the monsters, the evil magician and the good looking woman! Enjoy this old fashioned Saturday afternoon type film and its Ray Harryhausen creatures!

Fantastic adventure story telling with great Stop motion effects from the genius. This isn't Ray's best work but so far from all the movies I've seen him being involved with, this is one of the best.

I was gripped into the story line from start to finish and found it lots of fun. I shall be watching the sequels soon and hope that they are as good or at least as fun.

Superb adventure. The legend of Sinbad is once again brought to the screen, and this is beyond doubt the best effort.

What makes the movie are special effects way ahead of its time, a great story and...Sokurah a magician with his own agenda!.

Fun for young and old, highly recommended.

I've always been thrilled with the Cyclops in this flick for some reason. I think this was the first action flick I ever saw with full stop action animated characters.
