THE ADVENTURES OF ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD was the last of the Disney anthologies from the late 1940's and is certainly the best of them. As with FUN AND FANCY FREE, this movie is two half-hour featurettes in one film. The first is a somewhat loose but lively retelling of Kenneth Grahame's "Wind in the Willows", narrated by Basil Rathbone. The second, and arguably the best, featurette is "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", delivered by Bing Crosby. The latter sequence in particular is highlighted by a frighteningly spooky climax. Both featurettes play better on their own than they do in this feature, but as this film's debut to the video market has been long overdue, Disney collectors shouldn't mind.
A great pair of whimsical Disney features based on charming literary classics.
"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is a remarkably faithful adaptation of Washington Irving's tale (Tim Burton, eat your heart out), with wonderful music that is only enhanced by the narrative stylings of Bing Crosby. When I was growing up, it was unbreakable tradition that we watch it every Halloween night.
The other feature, "The Wind in the Willows", is equally entertaining and light-hearted. Funny and adventurous.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one of my all-time favorite cartoons, but the second feature on this video is only so-so, thus lowering the rating a bit.
While the Mr. Toad short is fun and all, as the box shows the Legend of Sleepy Hollow short film on here is the real star of the show. About as scary as an old Disney can get the character animation is really amazing in this, a lot of the jokes they have from Ichabod are just from how lanky he is. Really holds up well too and is probably the best retelling of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow to date, and yes I am counting the Tim Burton one.
Holiday classic. But no matter how good Mr. Toad (Wind in the Willows) is, you really want to see the classic animated "Legend of Sleepy Hollow". Watch it close to Halloween and be a kid again. Best part: The climactic chase scene
The first part about Mr. Toad is a decent adaptation of one of the stories of The Wind in the Willows. It's ok, but personally I prefer the 1983 version made with puppets... The second part about Inchabod and the headless horseman is pretty good and fairly amusing... All in all a weak 3 stars... not bad, just not very good.
