A directorial debut by an American-Korean filmmaker. Good cast and stellar performances by all characters. The story isnt hard to follow but I think most of the concept was lost with how the film was directed, still... I liked it, the films got a different taste to it.

A perfectly awful example of a certain breed of American indie film that brings together a lot of familiar faces for an ensemble drama about... nothing. When a film's main premises are: a) Brendan Fraser being a psychic badass, b) Andy Garcia being anywhere in the film, and c) relying on Sarah Michelle Gellar's "acting talent" you know you're gonna shoot yourself in the foot before pre-production even begins. It tries too hard to...( read more) be Crash and Magnolia tied together and ends up being a boring ultra-violent piece of trash that makes no sense at times. I'm disgusted by all the negative reviews, both critics and Flixster users.

Please, trust me, this is fantastic.

The Air I Breathe is a good movie. It has a very interesting story and a very convincing and well developed plot based on an ancient Chinese proverb that breaks life down into four emotional cornerstones: happiness, pleasure, sorrow and love. A businessman (Whitaker) bets his lif...( read more)e on a horse race; a gangster (Fraser) sees the future; a pop star (Gellar) falls prey to a crime boss (Garcia); a doctor (Bacon) must save the love of his life. Its a film full of drama, it also has a little of humor some of it involuntary. The cast is formed by all-star actors, Brendan Frasier delivers an outstanding performance as a mobster who can see the future, Sarah Michelle Gellar's role as a singer that apparently is happy but lives ina deep sadness was very good and convincing, Forest Whitaker excellent as always, Andy Garcia as a cold heart gangster is amazing, Kevin Bacon's performance is great as a doctor capable of doing anything to save a life and Emile Hirsch was also very convincing and even funny at some moments. To resume, this is a very good movie with mixed feelings such as sadness, happiness and love that you will enjoy and fully recommend.

    THE AIR I BREATHE (2008)

...( read more)our short films, if you will, with characters all at some point playing small parts, or bigger, in someone else's story.

Forest Whitaker is Happiness. A business man who went to school all his life to finally have a job that supposedly makes him happy, but it doesnt. For some reasons, he decides to take risks and bet money on a horse, that is really going to win, according to some of his colleagues. The horse doesnt and he find himself owing a lot of money to Fingers, a bad guy. That will bring him to rob a bank, he'll finally feel alive and will make him happy.

There are three more stories like that, involving Brendan Fraser as Pleasure, A man working for Fingers who happens to be able to see in the short future. Sarah Michelle Gellar is Sorrow, a Britney-style pop star who has been bought by, guess who, Fingers. Last, and least, we have Kevin Bacon as Love. A doctor who tries to do all he can when his best friend's wife is about to die, he is in love with her.

The Air I breathe had so much potential but it was all wasted cause of a lack of talent in the writing. Its only 90 minutes long, there is no time to develop any of the characters or make the audience care for their quests. There are also some ridiculous things, like when in the fourth part, Kevin Bacon has to find someone with a rare blood type that doesnt even exists in real life.

The directing is bt too stylish without spending time with the emotions of the characters. Its weird how a film about emotions never manages to make the audience feel anything on that level. The acting is alright, even though there seems to be some miscasting and some tired performances. A good idea badly handled and executed but its not terrible, its pretentious though and it stays on the average level all the way. Could have been better.
