i simply love billy bob thornton's character in this film, as davy crockett! not even sure why...but he brings the right mix of humor nd rustic & tough looks. but overall the film didn't feel very epic to me- which is what i think they were going for. still, a pretty decent historical film.
I enjoyed the nightscenes and the fighting during the nightscenes.
All the rest was beyond me. Who the hell is Fuckleferry Thin?
May have historical significance, but there's been many a battle like that over here and ain't noone made a movie about that stuff...
By its portrayal of Mexican volunteers courageously fighting for the independence of Texas, this film is remarkably more fair and historically accurate that the earlier 60s film by the same title (contemporary historians estimate that about 60% of those who died defending the Alamo were Mexican volunteers). Mark Blucas, Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton, Leon Rippy, and Emilio Echevarria all do their part to make this a memorable and dramatic re-telling of the principal events of the Texas War of Independence.
I grew up in Texas, so I'm quite familar with the Alamo siege "story". This version seems directed by Oliver Stone, and really goes for the gut, in terms of portrails of reality. And why did Santa Anna lose in the end? Obviously he wanted slaves too. Remember the Alamo! Remember los muertos del rios!
Not amazing, but a fairly nice historical piece. I can't say that every bit of it was historically accurate at all, but it was fairly well exectued without being too overdramatic.
HOwdy! LoVed IT!! WOnDErFUll ACtoRs! Makes YA Feel Like the ALAmo is ALiVe. Taught All ya need 2 KNow About thE AlAmo Story. NOthiNG HEre Was a Lie about the PAst.LovEd When BoB pLAyed the VioLin PArt! =[)
bbt plays a good fiddle...but the film lacks a punch. too stop start and was davie crocett really there at the time???any way this is a rec but its not great
A bit of a who's who when it comes to the cast. Not really sure how well thought through that was. I am a huge fan of Billy Bob, but this was not one of his finer moments.
I also enjoy a good war film, but in this case I would suggest to get Glory instead.
OK movie, not very educational (I know nothing about this so called liberation of Texas prior to seeing this movie). BB Thornton saves this movie from the 2-star mark. Overall the acting is a bit overdone.
Spectacular and extroadinary. Deeply moving, captivating and absolutely breathtaking. A fierce, powerful and excellent epic filled with emotion, drama and awsome battle sequences. It's a triumph. It's a totally compelling true story. The cast is truly outstanding, they consume theirr roles with intelligence and dedication. Dennis Quaid is magnificent. Billy Bob Thorton is brilliant. Jason Patric is teriffic.
The movie is a remake of the movie from the 60's. The movie is well-told story about the battle between the Republic of Mexico and the rebel Texian forces, the Texians' fight for independence. The movie is good and has a lot of fine battle scenes. The acting is good to, especially by Billy Bob Thornton who plays the famous Davy Crockett.
I'll never understand why ppl dont like the movie. For me it's a great movie, and a great tribute to those who fell at the Alamo.
For them, who were the real true heroes, I pay my tribute and my respects.
The alamo was a 1962 western directed by John Wayne. I thought it was okay but it was too preachy and to american. But the new version from john lee hancock is a much better improvement over the originally. While in the original John Wayne made davy Crocket, jim Bowie and colonel travis as larger than life american heroes who kill more than a hundred mexiucans before they met their detah is full glory and making the mexican like cartoon caharcters. In this film by John Lee Hancock, Davy crocket, jim bowie and colonel travis look more human and real than they did in the original version and the mexicans are also come off very real and respected. The story known to many american takes place in texas as the american fought against the mexican to win the battle over taking texas from the mexican government. This key event in american history was the pivotal war that made the us win the state known now as texas. The alamo provided a post where american settlement and the mexican army ran by santa anna portecting people working to develop the budy territory including Davy Crocket, Jim Bowie and Sam Houston. When the alamo was ran by a new leader named colonel travis things began to go sour which eventually led the post for an ambush led by mexican leader santa anna who sole purpose is to take over texas and the post. When word spread out about santa ana plans to take over the alamo, an angered Sam Houston begins to spread word to the american government to help him send an army to protect the alamo which is portected only by a few hundred people compared to santa ana's massive army by the hundreds. Through many battle sequences which devastated santa's army in the end santa and his army slaughtered everyone at the post and afew weeks later General Sam Houston and his american army would confront Sanata anan once again but this time the americans won the war and texas became part of the usa.
The battle sequences are superb. Ver well choregraphed and staged. The shots are exciitng to watch. The dialogue ius crisp and real. The direction is good. But it's the actors most notably Bill Bob Thornton as Davy Crocket, Dennis Quaid as Sam Houston and Jason Patrick as Jim Bowie that makes this film well worth sitting through. They bring a realism and a dimenion to the characters that make them come alive oin film than the original did. The scene where a soldier from santa ana's army begins to play a music number on his violin and replied back by davy crocket who plays a number back on his violin is a wonderful sequence at this moment we realize that even though it a war that music could bring some peace for just for a few seconds to two armies who would later kill each other. The ways that the main characters die is also real.
a must to own and worth watching several times. a beautiful masterpiece.
Dennis Quaid rides in & twats those dastardly Mexicans who killed Davy Crockett at the Alamo at the end! Americans need to learn sometimes they loose sometimes instead of changing history so they win (they did that with Pearl Harbour & anything mentioning Vietnam) Liked Billy Bob's Speech though. - also the British captured the enigma machine in the 2nd world war, not the Americans according to their movie U-571 lol - sorry this stuff bugs the rest of the world.lol.
It was a decent movie. Kind've slow, and not really my genre, but well acted and a beautiful score! I do have to say however, that Billy B Thornton as Davey Crocket is one of the weirdest casting choices I have ever seen.
a very good interpretation of the fight at the Alamo on the 6th of april 1836, with 2 great actors on the same side Billy Bob Thornton and Dennis Quaid, it has a pretty realistic effect probably because they did not use so many special effects to preserve the air of those past times and they did it, i hven't really seen the older version but i really liked this one and i think that if anyone missed it should see it, no matter if he/she knows history, the movie always puts u there in those times, i mean there's great acting, and lots of shooting, people dying, honor, respect and of course the need for freedom and again like in many movies like this, the enemy's army is 10times bigger than the honorable men's army that are trying to survive and supress the enemy as long as they can, with the cost of their lives!!!!! i really haven't red any books or ever heard of the Alamo, until i've seen the movie and made it pretty clear for me!!!!!
Teeeerrrible. Horribly dramatic for a war movie. The americans look like heroes, and the mexicans like villains, even when the americans started the war for expanding their territory. The battle scenes looked good (it earned one star for me). Too passionated for a war movie, i think not even Dr King was that excited during his speech. The difference is that dr Martin Luther King Would have earned a 6 star, and this thing doesnt deserve even one and a half. Good actors, for drama movies.
Definatley a much better look of the Texas Revolution than John Wayne's version. Each actor plays their part very well. Truly a magnificaent film. For those of you who didn't see it because you've never heard of the Alamo or the Texas Revolution. get out of the rock you're livin under and go see it.
