Quirky and cute as well as funny. There are a lot of warm-and-fuzzy moments in this movie; I liked it and thought it was touching.
It's silly to think about and it was quite simple however it had way too happy and unrealistic ending. However it made me remember that movies are allowed to create happy endings to make the audience smile. It tooka bit to get into but it was delightful.
Snooze... it's like a movie for your grandma. Think thike a boring and unfunny version of "Calendar Girls".
Though it boasts a great cast, it tries a little bit hard to emulate "State and Main." It was okay.
06-22-08 --I really felt for the main character in this movie (Jeff Bridges). I mean he was at a point in his life where he just didn't know what to do and where to go from there. He just wanted to have money and a life that he can be proud of so that he doesn't feel ashamed when he is with his son. What better way than to attempt to make a porno. Good flick!
funny one!
has a very good material, though is about a group of friends that wanted to make a porno film, the end is pretty interesting!
Brilliant movie! Absolutely love it, by far one of the better films I have seen in quite a while. Here's an interesting story plot about a fantastic group of friends who decide on a whim to make a porn film. One purpose: to improve their lot in life, and support a friend in need. Great all-around cast (and among my favorites): Jeff Bridges, Ted Danson, Tim Blake Nelson, Joe Pantoliano, & William Fichtner. Patrick Fugit tops off this crazy bunch. Hilarious scenes. A must-see! Great music.
I really enjoyed this film, more than I thought I would since I didn't expect much from a film about guys that want to do a porno. But the movie was funny and in a way sweet bacause it showed you the importance of so many things like friendship and fatherhood. Who would've thought?
Very entertaing and definetly worth a watch.
Before completely dismissing this movie due to its plot, take some of your time to read this review.
When knowing that the storyline focus on a bunch of guys trying to film an amateur porn movie, your first reaction is to just ignore this movie. And that was what I initially did. But when I looked at the cast, I saw that it had a great one. I still remembered Ted Danson from playing the amazing womanizer on Cheers. Jeff Bridges from K-Pax and William Fichtner from countless incredible movies. I thought that with having a cast like this one, maybe, just maybe, the movie wouldn't turn out to be a complete failure.
And it didn't.
Yes, they are still a bunch of guys trying to film an amateur porn movie (no porn and practically no nudity shown), but it's much more than that. What started as a get together of a group of locals from a small town to make a porn film and thus gain money and succeed in life, turned out to be a journey of self discovery. The characters are delivered so perfectly that you can't help but to feel related to them somehow. Besides, we've all known someone like these guys. A constant loser who's always trying to get a direction in life by means of some new groundbreaking idea that is bound to fail.
I'll have to say that I loved Ted Danson's and William Fichtner's characters, not wanting to demerit the others. Moose (Ted Danson) is gay but doesn't want anyone to know. Obviously they all know, since he is your typical stereotypical homosexual, but they all pretend to believe his incredible stories about all those women he constantly has passionate affairs with.
Otis (William Fichtner) is the church's janitor and wants to succeed in life by doing absolutely nothing. When Otis decides that he wants to be involved in the film he says to Jeff Bridges' character:
"Is there a guy, when you're making a movie, who just stands around... ?"
He's made executive producer of the film.
The movie is packed with great lines but it also has its heartfelt moments. Like when Jeff Bridges kept replaying his son's voice mail "... I love you Dad" over and over again or when Moose is confronted with his homosexuality.
For me, one of the most important things that a movie must have is a message, and this one has.
The moral may be subtle, but it's there in grand quantities.
The movie is simple, sweet and hilariously funny.
Sometimes our minds just aren't in the mood to crack some hard puzzled plot or watch constantly cars blowing up. If you are up for a relaxing evening, this movie may be your choice.
"We learned two things: nothing ventured, nothing gained & no guts, no glory."
Citizens of a small town, under the influence of a man in the midst of a mid-life crisis, come together to make an adult film. eff Bridges stars as a recent divorcée who is down on his luck in a small town. Looking for a way to make it big and have the means to spoil his son, he decides to make a porn movie. He does this with the help of his supportive friends, including Pantoliano, Ted Danson, William Fichtner, Tim Blake Nelson and Patrick Fugit. Their film will be distinctive because it will be made by and feature talent from their own small town. Pantoliano plays the appropriately named writer-director of the production, Some Idiot. Danson plays a gay friend who tries too hard at hiding his sexual orientation, making for some very funny and awkward moments. Fichtner does a really good job with making a fairly plain character entertaining and fun to watch. Bridges plays a loser in the vein of "The Dude", except he's got it together a little more and is a little cleaner cut. About half of Bridges performance is voice-over as well, which was done fairly well. My biggest complaint would be that their female characters receive very little screen time and are underdeveloped. The cut we saw really underused Lauren Graham and Judy Greer. The film has been named THE MOGULS and DIRTY MOVIE in other countries and perhaps that confusion of titles has been part of the problem of the lack of promotion the film received in the theaters. But in a way, seeing this very special movie in home surroundings adds to the intimacy and the very warmly honest view of the genuinely kind and caring interrelationships among the people of this small town.
The premise of this movie is weird, but the end product is fine. Some strange stuff along the way and some real laughs. Want a simple movie for a relaxing evening? This could be it.
This wasn't a bad film. I thought it was gonna be perverted or contain alot of nudity and it didn't. It concentrated on Jeff Bridges and his friends trying to make an amateur porn
I rented this movie simply because it had Lauren Graham in it. I found it to be a really cute and funny film about a town banding together to make a porno. The film is especially well done considering this is the writer's first time directing.
An absolutely unexpected surprise. I rented it mainly because it had Jeff Bridges, one of the best American actors out there, but I wasn't anticipating such a rollicking, genuinely funny and good-natured movie. The characters approach the making of their first porn movie with such gusto and enthusiasm, it's almost like an adult "Babes in Arms", with everybody rolling up their sleeves to put on a show a la Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland, smiling all the way. The cast is just great. Bridges is great as usual, as is Joe Pantoliano, but my favorites were William Fichtner as a scuzzy but lovable groundskeeper, and Ted Danson as a homosexual in utter and complete denial. The scene with Bridges and Isaiah Washington discussing racism and "porno penis" over coffee and pie is one of the funniest scenes I've seen in awhile. Great movie!
A rated R movie about these down-and-out noboby's living in nowhere trying to make a no-nothing porno movie and it doesn't have nudity (well, you see Ted Danson's butt). However all in all it's a much better film for it!
The great cast does a wonderful job portraying their respective quirky characters, not even Lauren Graham's cringy little nose can ruin the love interest.
The two biggest flaws for this film are that one is the obvious low production value - this film just doesn't look good. And the second is an unnecessary gay minister/priest joke - it's over-done, out-dated, simply not that funny.
DVD WORTHY:
Probably Not. A solid one-timer/rental though.
HI-DEF WORTHY:
Again, this movie is nothing special to look at, therefore Hi-Def would be ridiculous.
It's been a long time since I watched a movie and felt good like I did after seeing this film. The characters to me were likable, quirky and fun. I believed in the friendships of these small town folks and enjoyed seeing their experience trying to make a porno. Very redeeming ending. Favorite scene: Andy realizes at the end how to save the film.
no as good as the big lebowski but with definate undertones. well worth checking out. funny crazy mad all rolled into one. and i guess the myth about size is not all as it seems, has been put to rest hahaha
While the all-star cast (and what a cast I might add) all give likeable performances but the film itself is clichéd, unbelievable and silly. A lot of the actors are wasted and the script isn't that funny. It has its moments but there is nothing new here.

A geniune pleasant suprise.
You start by loving the cast, as each person enters the movie you love them all, then you fall in love with there "buddy" relationship, which to be perfectly honest is the main draw of the movie, and then you get on with the fun or making this amateur porno movie and considering the subject, it is one of the most charming, feel good movies you will see all year.
Jeff bridge does what he does best and makes you love the movie from the get go. His likable charm and his characters reasons for doing this is absoluty perfectly laid out , the closing scene being one of the most perfect of 2006.
The dialogue between the friends is perefect (did i mention the cast...being perfect, playing against type to comedic brilliance!) you just want to be part of the gang, the friendship feels geniune and accepting and you just want them to succeed so much.
The ending may very well wrap up a little too nicely, but it does'nt matter at all, you're glad of this outcome and you almost want there to be more capers for this gang to get invoved in.
Basically the feel good movie of the year, great characters, nice people getting on with life in "there last chance" at success and not one moment goes by without grinning ...fantastic!
