Plot: Nouveau riche American Christopher Newman (Matthew Modine) turns to blackmail in the name of true love in this adaptation of Henry James's novel. Christopher falls in love with Claire De Cintre (Aisli...( read more  )ng O'Sullivan), but her mother, Madame de Bellegarde (Diana Rigg), refuses to accept him. When a nosy maid (Brenda Fricker) helps Christopher uncover the Madame's dark secret, he decides to use it against her in order to marry Claire.
