This was one of my favorite Michael Douglas (U.S. President Shepard) movies, he really played this part well. In short Michael Douglas looked and acted very Presidential, too bad he is not running in 2008. Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox and Annette Bening were all very good also. Martin Sceen can be my Chief of Staff anyday, Michael J. Fox demonstrated the toughness that must come from the U.S. President's Cabinet Member's. In the end President Shepard, not only changes U.S. Policies in regards to combating Green House Gases and Fosil Fuel Damages by ordering a 20% reduction on all fosil fuel emissions. And the re-writing of his crime bill that will specifical targets Hand Guns and Assault Rifles (taking on the big boys a.k.a. The N.R.A.). When a man stands up to protect the dignity, honor and reputation of his woman, he says more then just mear words. On this principal there can be no compromise. In my opinion only a coward would attack a woman publically in the manner in which it was done in this movie, in this movie these character attacks that spun out of control were finally dealt with by President Shepard up close and personal. So if you love politics and the Washington Soapbox Environment, you will love this movie. This movie brings back the thought of what could be and that is something that should be on the heart and minds of all American's this year come November 4th, 2008.

Good performances, good script, engaging. I didn't lose interest. I'm a fan of Annette Bening, so I feel more favorable toward a movie she's in.
-
Fantastic movie. Let's put Micheal on the ticket this year, he would surely get elected. I'd have to say it is one of the better movies about the presidency.

If only we actually had a President like this and not the nut job currently in office. Here's hoping Obama wins.

At the beginning of the movie, it didn't seem like this movie was going to go very well, but it ended up being a great, fun movie to watch. The two main leads had great chemistry, and all of the characters were charming in their own way. Notably, Michael J. Fox, Martin Sheen and Samantha Mathis were superb in their roles. Michael Douglas made a great president - he has the charisma and presence for it, and he seemed to act more presidential than real presidents often do. Overall, it was a great flick, a tad predictable, but who cares?

Leave it to stupid ass TNT to show this movie a thousand times each year. Its fairly straight forward, with a happy ending. Hooray.

"Lewis, we've had presidents who were beloved, who couldn't find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight. People don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference."
The American President is a memorable, sweet, charming romantic comedy/drama that is wonderfully appealing and entertaining. Because the film was never a massive hit it was vastly overlooked. This isn't the kind of movie that would receive a high status at the box office and become a record-breaking smash hit. Instead the film relies on the appeal of the talent involved; in this case we have director Rob Reiner (most famous for films like Stand by Me, A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride) in addition to a host of delightful cast members.
It's a shame that the film was so overlooked because honestly, The American President is a whole lot better than the blockbuster twaddle produced quite persistently of late.
The President of the United States, Andrew Shepherd (Douglas), is a widower concerned with his popularity levels as an election approaches. The environmentalists are concerned with changes in emissions of green house gases. But the environmentalist group doesn't have adequate experience to efficiently battle the issue politically, instead hiring a smart political lobbyist named Sydney Ellen Wade (Bening) to make a mark on the White House. After Sydney first meets the President during a meeting, the two grow increasingly fond of each other. This results in a relationship that subsequently forms scandals that jeopardise Andrew's popularity level with an election that is growing closer by the days.
More than anything else, I was incredibly impressed with the actors that are featured in this film; with Douglas leading the cast in an immensely charismatic performance. I found Douglas appealing and a fantastic U.S. Presidential figure. (I wonder how the White House looked upon his portrayal when the film was first released...) If Douglas was running for president, he'd have my vote. Annette Bening was another wonderful addition to the cast. She makes a perfect companion for Douglas. She's sophisticated and smart, with a very subtle appeal.
The script is very intelligently written and showcases some very intriguing characters. The dialogue was taut and interesting even though it appears that nothing really significant ever happens.
The score for the film is also a great touch; utilising very triumphant, patriotic music during key scenes. The cherry on top is the very talented directing from veteran filmmaker Rob Reiner. As a result of this prize-winning combination I found every second of the movie highly engrossing. One of my only complaints would be the ending that felt a tad incomplete.
The American President is a fantastic comedy/drama. In a nutshell: the film is heart-warming, fun and light-hearted. As a consequence the film scores as an extremely entertaining experience.
I found it interesting that Douglas' portrayal of the President is nice, caring and honourable in addition to taking a strong stance against lying. Jesus, if only! -
Reiner must be the most up and down director around. In comparison to his masterworks- The Princess Bride, Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, and Misery- this movie is nothing. The plot is actually pathetic, the characters suck, the acting is very dodgy and the script is hideous. Nauseating romantic drama of which Reiner should be deeply ashamed...

Michael Douglas & Annette Bening were a treat to watch. I loved the dancing romance between these two mixed with the political agenda made for a very entertaining & enjoyable film. If you are looking for a feel good film with some warm fuzzy awwwws thrown in check it out!

Before there was "The West Wing," there was this movie. Probably one of the best political and romantic comedies out there...some utterly hilarious moments between Michael Douglas and Annette Bening. Outstanding!
-
Even though it kinda feels like a Frank Capra ripoff, it's still quite good. Michael Douglas is actually likable and the entire cast is pretty great.
-
cute and funny, a great cast and well made. it looks like a chick flick, but really isnt. its more of a comedy.
-
Another cute romantic comedy, which is trying to say why cant a President fall in love? Michael Douglas and Anette Being have such a good chemistry on screen. Does love and politics work?
-
Seriously, how good are Aaron Sorkin's scripts. I don't think anyone else writes like him. Witty, engaging, profound and touching all at the same time.
-
Cleverly written political fantasy about the American president falling in love with a political activist. Written by the talented Aaron Sorkin, this movie always keeps a smile on your face.
-
A pretty good movie, Michael Douglas acts his age and is believable as the President of the United States. Annette Bening is awesome as usual and shines in this flick. Definitely not your typical political movie or romantic comedy.
-
Really enjoyable and well written rom-com. "I'd like to buy some flowers, please. This is the President of the United States. Hello? Hello?"

Memorable, charming romantic comedy that is both entertaining and appealing. The President of the United States, Andrew Shepherd (Douglas), is a widower concerned with his immense popularity levels as an election approaches. The environmentalists are concerned with changes in emissions of green house gases, and hire a smart political lobbyist named Sydney Ellen Wade (Bening). After meeting Sydney, Andrew strikes up a relationship with her and as a result this relationship jeopardises Andrew's popularity level. The performances are all very good, with Douglas delivering a fine performance. The script is very intelligently written and showcases some very intriguing characters. The score for the film is also a great touch, with very patriotic music played throughout. It's hard to explain the appeal of this gem of a movie, but the combination of a great script made better with remarkable performances is exceptional. The ending felt a tad incomplete though. It's interesting that Douglas' take on the President is nice, caring, honourable and doesn't lie. If only!

This is the film I have practically watched countless times with different friends...It was like I was actually promoting it like I was a part of the cast...hahaha I saw so much in me the character of Annete as being strong willed \ witty \ smart \ brutally honest yet... very much in love...Just loved this movie!!!

tenho altas expectativas quando se trata de Aaron Sorkin, talvez altas demais. o casal não me conquistou o suficiente pra que eu torcesse por eles, e o que é um romance sem essa torcida? frustrante.
-
