Plot: The best-selling novel by Michael Crichton was faithfully adapted for this taut 1971 thriller, about a team of scientists racing against time to destroy a deadly alien virus that threatens to wipe out...( read more read more... ) life on Earth. As usual with any Crichton-based movie, the emphasis is on an exciting clash between nature and science, beginning when virologists discover the outer-space virus in a tiny town full of corpses. Projecting total contamination, the scientists isolate the deadly strain in a massive, high-tech underground lab facility, which is rigged for nuclear destruction if the virus is not successfully controlled. The movie spends a great deal of time covering the scientific procedures of the high-pressure investigation, and the rising tensions between scientists who have been forced to work in claustrophobic conditions. It's all very fascinating if you're interested in scientific method and technological advances, although the film is obviously dated in many of its details. It's more effective as a thriller in which tension is derived not only from the deadly threat of the virus, but from the escalating fear and anxiety among the small group of people who've been assigned to save the human race. The basic premise is still captivating; it's easy to see how this became the foundation of Crichton's science-thriller empire. --Jeff Shannon

I watched this with my Dad (this is more his kind of thing). I might have fallen asleep at the very end, but I did actually find the movie intriguing. A little slow-paced, but interesting.

Second best book adaptation I've ever seen, and the only one of a Michael Chrichton book that's any good.

An alien virus has invanded Earth in this tense thriller epic based on the Michael Chrichton novel. Scientists are trying to prevent the spread of the contageon, but time is running out. Robert Wse is back doing what he does best. (Don't bother with the remake).

This story is quite thrilling as a novel, but doesnt translate well to screen. The quality story is still there, its just incredibly boring.

way ahead of its time..a brilliant and intelligent bio-thriller. No cheap thrills here, but taut, tense, mystery that will keep the viewer engrossed till the very end.

    Watched this in school
It was super suspensful and crazy. Especially @ the end of it, when Dr. Stone took 4 minutes and 59 seconds to get a key in a hole. He only had 5 minutes. I wanted 2 slap him, but he made it within one second. Funny stuff.

A better read. If in the right hands, this might be ripe for a remake, especially amongst todays top apocalyptic thrillers.

It's like if Ben Stein swore he was going to make the most exciting movie possible, he would spew out this crap.

1971 sci-fi thriller. No computer effects. Good acting and good story. Good adaptation of M Crichton's novel. But 1971 - don't expect it to match what we've become used to in sci-fi, but do expect a reasonably good movie.

The start is very good and sets up a mood of fear and urgency that the rest of the film just lets drop away. The middle section is far too long and a touch dull and only a rather forced ending gets any sort of tension back into the film. All told, this should have been much better given the subject matter but, for all its flaws, it is watchable once ? but to be honest I'd rather reread the book.

Meticulously paced but strangely engaging tale of a mysterious virus that emerges in a small New Mexico town. Good for a rainy afternoon when you're in a non-spaceship/alien/monster sci-fi mood. I forsee an update/remake in the future, given the contemporary bio-weapon atmosphere in our world.

If you are into end of the world scenarios, then this one is for you. Michael Crichton's novel is adapted into a pseudo-documentary style thriller as a team of elite scientists rush to prevent the spread of a deadly microbe from outer space. I'm certain this is where Resident Evil's Umbrella Labs were born. Best bit: The extremely tight ending, which cannot fail in drawing you to the edge of your seat.

This movie is laughable today. It's very dated, and it shows. It's not worth your time. The acting is so-so, but felt forced (like William Shatner style). The storyline is okay. By today's standards, it appears like a low budget flick.

Okay it was officially a book first but this film has a simple yet effective storyline. A space probe designed to collect samples has landed in a small town and wiped out it's population, their entire blood supply turned to dust. A team of skilled scientists must solve the riddle of the strange alien form before they themselves become prey to it.

Movies about diseases are creepy. This one had me going through sanitary hand wipes faster than Adrian Monk after taking first place in the World Cow Chip Throwing Contest! The science is a little dated, but it still holds up well!!

Based on the Crichton book of the same name (which I haven't read), this is a great techno-thriller. I still love the "buttocks" line.

This is a solid sci-fi film that has an intriguing premise. The cast were pretty good, the production design is well done and the script is well written in its details. Unfortunately what lets it down is that it's too overlong, the story is somewhat dated and there moments were it became a bit dull. Despite all that it is worth a watch if you are looking for something different in the genre.

A great rendering of Crichton's vision. Still worth a look today. This is how Sci-fi should be done: intelligently.
