The Andromeda Strain

Arthur Hill, David Wayne, George Mitchell, James Olson, Kate Reid

The best-selling novel by Michael Crichton was faithfully adapted for this taut 1971 thriller, about a team of scientists racing against time to destroy a deadly alien virus that threatens to wipe out...( read more  read more... ) life on Earth. As usual with any Crichton-based movie, the emphasis is on an exciting clash between nature and science, beginning when virologists discover the outer-space virus in a tiny town full of corpses. Projecting total contamination, the scientists isolate the deadly strain in a massive, high-tech underground lab facility, which is rigged for nuclear destruction if the virus is not successfully controlled. The movie spends a great deal of time covering the scientific procedures of the high-pressure investigation, and the rising tensions between scientists who have been forced to work in claustrophobic conditions. It's all very fascinating if you're interested in scientific method and technological advances, although the film is obviously dated in many of its details. It's more effective as a thriller in which tension is derived not only from the deadly threat of the virus, but from the escalating fear and anxiety among the small group of people who've been assigned to save the human race. The basic premise is still captivating; it's easy to see how this became the foundation of Crichton's science-thriller empire. --Jeff Shannon

You have to keep in mind that this film was made in 1970 (released in '71) which predates CGI and digital recording. All things considered, Robert Wise and his crew did a phenomenal job with the resources available. Still, time has not been kind to Andromeda's special ef...( read more)fects, rendering them a little 'nostalgic'. On the other hand, Michael Crichton's story is completely timeless and as intriguing as it was 40 years ago. A minor classic in the genre of 70's science fiction.

An intelligent sci-fi classic and the first of its kind. With its stylish split screens and haunting soundtrack, this Robert Wise/ Michael Crichton collaboration has been the inspiration for a great many resent films and was a turning point in modern cinema! Brilliant!

This film totally plays to my inner Geek. I have studied and researched infectious disease for some time, and, as an undergraduate, would discuss topics like, 'what are the minimum requirements for life?' And here, curtesy of Michael Crichton, is a movie that encompasses these th...( read more)emes, and explores them in a believable manner (well, as believeable as you can be with an underground base and alien organism).

Even without an appeal to geekdom, it is a great film. It turns an investigation into a mysterious micro-organism into a tense thriller, and remains one of the best films based on any of Michael Crichton's writing.

An intelligent sci-fi thriller which manages to be exciting despite very little incident. A touch overlong and lacking an A-list cast, it's still one of Robert Wise's best late efforts.

Very scientific and sterile. Not too exciting. I wouldn't want to be there.

This movie of an alien virus that wipes out a small town might be too slow for some people. There's no action as such but it has a lot of tension and suspense as the scientists race against time to find an answer on how to combat the virus. It looks dated just because of the old ...( read more)computers but the story remains fantastic.

This film did not age well. Though I like Michael Crichton in general, his ideas are rather simple and don't always translate well to the screen. And this movie felt like 2001, in that visuals (which at the time may have been impressive) were given more importance than plot.

Crhicton's clever take on how the government would handle the introduction of an alien virus to our biome.

Seriously advanced for it's time. I was actually rather surprised at how often the "sci-fi" technology they had is actually in practice today.

Very tense and compelling and it always held my interest. The film holds up amazingly well after nearly 40 years. The plot is fascinating and it is thoroughly convincing. Well acted, great atmosphere.
