Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader
Robert Wise brings his Academy Award-winning sobriety and meticulousness to a pulp tale that cries out for the slapdash vigor of a Roger Corman.
-
Variety Staff, Variety
Nelson Gidding's adaptation of the Michael Crichton novel is too literal and talky.
-
Geoff Andrew, Time Out
Wise does rather plod through the plot.
-
Roger Greenspun, New York Times
Nothing very exciting goes on.
-
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
Splendid entertainment that will get you worried about whether they'll be able to contain that strange blob of alien green crystal.
-
Emanuel Levy, EmanuelLevy.Com
Robert Wise's version of Chrihton's popular novel is a decent (but no more) film, with some good art design.
-
Fernando F. Croce, CinePassion
Disquieting
-
Pablo Villaca, Cinema em Cena
Uma ficção-científica inteligente, para adultos, que usa a "ficção" como trampolim para sua fascinante "ciência". E a direção de arte é um espetáculo à parte, mesmo que datada.
-
, TV Guide's Movie Guide
An intriguing, suspenseful story is somewhat hampered by a dull cast. The last sequence will have you on the edge of your seat.
-
Ian Nathan, Empire Magazine
Wise (and Crichton) concoct the most absorbing, riveting take on science fiction tempered with science fact.
-
, Film4
Director Wise takes few liberties with Michael Crichton's breakthrough best-seller and the film is all the stronger for it.
-
Jeffrey M. Anderson, Combustible Celluloid
Wise and screenwriter Nelson Gidding focus on the details and the science of the story, giving it a natural suspense that nearly holds up for the entire 131 minutes.
-
Kevin Carr, 7M Pictures
A great book, but a mind-boggling boring movie.
-
Steve Crum, Kansas City Kansan
Studied, fascinating, tense sci-fi classic.
-
Dennis Schwartz, Ozus' World Movie Reviews
The paranoid thriller unfolds at a tedious pace and seems to take forever to develop.
-
James O'Ehley, Sci-Fi Movie Page
This is probably the most pure science fiction work that author Michael Crichton have ever done.
-
Scott Weinberg, eFilmCritic.com
One of Crichton's earliest adaptations is still one of his finest.
-
Steve Rhodes, Internet Reviews
The ending is arguably a bit too neat, but works nevertheless.

Wise and Gidding (director and screenwriter) succesfully repeat the formula applied when adapting the psychological horror classic "The Haunting". A concise emphasis in human drama and scientific verosimilitud over a seemingly far-fetched subject. Tense and paranoid atmosphere that grows in its final stages, despite the overload of dialogue. An adrenaline-pounding thriller.

A very serious sci-fi thriller about an alien virus on Earth. Somewhat boring in places, but overall a really good movie.

I've seen this film years ago, but I suppose I'd never really "seen" it. This truly is a science-fiction film like few others. The characters are all played by unknowns and they're all older, unlike some sci-fi films of late which leading scientists in the world are in their mid-20's with personal baggage overshadowing the main star of the film; the virus. The date/time stamps during the film give it a documentary feel here and there which makes the viewer feel as if they are as much in a hurry as the scientists. The electronic score adds to the early 70's sci-fi feel and perfectly compliments the look, and damn does it look cool in only the way director Robert Wise could make it.
If you haven't seen this film, rent it, pop some popcorn, draw the blinds and enjoy one of the more interesting science thrillers from the early 1970s.

You have to keep in mind that this film was made in 1970 (released in '71) which predates CGI and digital recording. All things considered, Robert Wise and his crew did a phenomenal job with the resources available. Still, time has not been kind to Andromeda's special effects, rendering them a little 'nostalgic'. On the other hand, Michael Crichton's story is completely timeless and as intriguing as it was 40 years ago. A minor classic in the genre of 70's science fiction.

An intelligent sci-fi classic and the first of its kind. With its stylish split screens and haunting soundtrack, this Robert Wise/ Michael Crichton collaboration has been the inspiration for a great many resent films and was a turning point in modern cinema! Brilliant!
-
An intelligent sci-fi thriller which manages to be exciting despite very little incident. A touch overlong and lacking an A-list cast, it's still one of Robert Wise's best late efforts.
-
Very scientific and sterile. Not too exciting. I wouldn't want to be there.

Robert Wise's seemingly intentionally unentertaining adaptation of Michael Crichton's disquieting novel "The Andromeda Strain" is comprised of both a great beginning and a tense ending, but its central parts are lackluster to say the least. Slow, talky and full of technical jargon, these parts of the film are boring and uneventful, and most will find it hard to pay full attention. "The Andromeda Strain" excels at being nothing more than a detailed look at the process that goes into discovering the cure for a deadly virus, but it's a real bore. Also, the split-screen editing techniques have dated just terribly.
-
"The Andromeda Strain" has great set design, believable performances and even though it is slow moving it keep you interested in a suspenseful climax.
-
If you want to experience 2001 A Space Odyssey without having to sit through five minute long shots of people staring, and monkeys fighting over carcasses, try Andromeda Strain!
-
way ahead of its time..a brilliant and intelligent bio-thriller. No cheap thrills here, but taut, tense, mystery that will keep the viewer engrossed till the very end.
-
Scared me silly as a kid. Great film
