Plot: This is an energetic, but ultimately mediocre adaptation of the play, directed on Broadway by Tommy Tune. Burt Reynolds is the town sheriff and a regular patron of a local bordello. He wages a public ...( read more read more... )battle to keep it open after it is targeted as the devil's den by a television minister. Charles Durning was nominated for a Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and there are some lively song and dance numbers featuring Dolly Parton as the madame of the Chicken Ranch. However, this becomes bogged down in too many serious moments for it to be more than a lightweight musical comedy. --Rochelle O'Gorman

The movie that introduced me to the one and only Dolly Parton! I love this movie so much to this day! Like the movie promo says "With Burt and Dolly, this much fun just can't be legal" Very funny, very moving also.

Despite being around 7 years old when I first watched this film (and not completely understanding all of it's contents) I watched this film over and over and fell in love with the costumes (how naive? ha ha).

Country music isn't particular my thing, but this film is fun and I still remember pretty much every word throughout the film (yes, I was an even worse film addict as a kid).

I have to rate this film fairly high, the nostalgia's sake.

A great film with an All Star Cast to back it up. Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds act fantastically in this film. Some of the songs are worth remembering. I would have to say not my favorite musical but it still was good to watch. Dom DeLuise is hilarious as along with Jim Nabors and Charles Duming. Who was a real treat to see was the housekeeper of the chicken coop + played by the same woman that was the maid in "Billy Madison"= PRICELESS RANDOM MOMENT IN FILM. But who took the whole show was of course Dolly Parton. She wrote most of the songs. "Hard Candy X-Mas" and who can not forget the famous song that made Whitney Houston a superstar "I Will Always Love You". I have to say Dolly Parton is a smart woman and can write songs really well. Def see this film.. it is a lot of fun!!!

It's a musical, but still pretty good. Maybe if the sheriff had arrested Melvin for breaking & entering, trespassing, invasion of privacy, and filming without a permit nor photo release, all of his evidence would have been deemed inadmissable in court. I'm just saying, watch a court movie for once, people!

Very memorable songs, great romance and some political social commentary make this an elite and entertaining musical.

This is a wonderfully made musical/comedy that is very entertaining and witty. Burt Reynolds and, especially, Dolly Parton both give likable performances, the supporting cast are delightful (Dom DeLuise and Charles Durning steal all their scenes) and it also has some really catchy songs.

We're not comparing apples to melons now...(Dolly Parton says that to Reba when she guest stars on Reba as a real estate egent.)

Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds were awesome in this musical. DOlly wrote the music herself and the movie is based off a true story!! I absolutely love this movie!

One of the worst ideas for a musical in the history of cinema. The idea of Dolly Parton as a madame was just too much to take.

According to rumour, Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton had some trouble with each other, but the result of the shooting came out quite funny.

Cheesy and very 80s. Gotta love Dolly Parton as a Whorehouse madame and Burt Reynolds is amusing as well. Worth a watch for the "cheese factor".
