The Big Lebowski

Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro

The Coen brothers and their agreeable cast make more fun than sense with this scattered farce about a pothead bowler who is mistaken for a deadbeat philanthropist and drawn into a cluster of kidnapper...( read more  read more... )s, nihilists, porn mobsters and Busby Berkeley beauties.

I avoided seeing this for quite awhile, but surprisingly I enjoyed this strange movie. I saw a sold out midnight showing of this film as part of a cult film series and annual Big Lebowski celebration in Cleveland. A friend clued me in to a theory that The Dude's adventure is lo...( read more)osely based on some Chandler style film-noir. With Sam Elliott as the narrator/stranger and a few references to tumbling tumbleweeds there are also elements of a western. How these two things combine I'm having trouble figuring out. But the movie is a whole other thing.

I loved Jeff Bridges performance as The Dude. Goodman was twisted as the violent foil to The Dude's stoned, easy going approach to life. Well, life doesn't offer easy going to The Dude. Moore, who I generally like, was so odd in her role, but good. Buscemi was hilarious as the belittled buddy on Walter and The Dude's bowling team. Hoffman was excellent as the supposedly naive secretary of the gruff and supposedly charitable Big Jeffrey Lebowski. A trophy wife, freaky German nihilists, a pervert bowling challenger, a porn producer, an ineffective private eye, and a handful of various thugs round out the rest of the supporting cast and seemingly drug induced plot. Also included are some way out there dream sequences. Most of the time I didn't find myself laughing because it was strange, but I did find a lot of the well written dialog and a few of the wacky situation funny.

"They figured he was a lazy time wasting slacker. They were right."

"Dude" Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire Lebowski, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.

Hysterically funny comic noir salute to THE BIG SLEEP from masters of mirth and menace The Coen Brothers gives a wide brush on the genre with one of cinema's greatest characters ever on The Silver Screen, The Dude (Bridges in an unexpected iconic role having a blast and resembling/channeling Warner Bros. Looney Tune Pete Puma; seriously his facial qualities are uncanny), a leftover '60s hippie/radical/slacker who unwittingly is mistaken for the titular LA entrepreneur (Huddleston) in a wild-and-woolly kidnapping scheme by a pack of numbskulled nihilists. Fast and riotously funny and inimitably quotable (i.e. "That rug really tied the room together") with outstandingly out-there performances by Goodman as The Dude's main amigo and bowling partner Walter Sobchak ("I don't bowl on Shabbas"), Buscemi as their dim bud Donny ("You're out of your element Donny!"), Moore as an avant-garde artiste, and Turturro as a 'pedarast' sporting foe. So many scenes and quotes to call my favorites but Walter's non-stop rant about Vietnam and showing a dullard teen what happens when you "Fuck a stranger in the ass!" are the tops. The Dude Abides!

A few really funny parts, but pretty dumb otherwise. Good cast though.

Only the Coen brothers (and Bridges of coarse) could make an unemployed, scruffy, old hippie type of 'dude', the coolest film character of all time, whom every man on this planet aspires to be like. Another great comedy from the Brother Coen, possibly their funniest and definitel...( read more)y their coolest! Brilliant!

again one more movie with high rating fail to impress. i thought its gona be fun ride, but it wasnt at all. first the directer not able to present the role of lebowski well, its spose to be a kool careless kind of character but somehow jeff bridges fails to do that, rather look s...( read more)tupid in that. second thing screenplay, movie was slow, they have a good story and they can make it lot a better if the movie have some pace and also presented it right way.the only good thing of the movie was John Goodman acting, he really was hilarious. but again they have material but they haven't able to made a good product from it. my advise watch at ur own risk.
