A surprisingly decent film. I honestly thought it would be terrible but not the case. Yes, the acting wasn't great, though Steve McQueen was actually quite good. But I can see how the special effects must have been quite dazzling at the time. And the subtext of teens versus adults is interesting.
'50's sci-fi horror movie about a gelatinous mass of shapeless, carnivorous goo from outer space. Besides being a cinematic cult classic, it's also a wonderful film for parents who are having difficulty teaching their children to not touch anything that looks nasty or sticky. "Don't touch that, it might be the blob" is all my Mom ever had to say to get me to leave things alone and undisturbed.
Alien paranoia flicks of the 50s mirrored cold war age fears, especially in The Blob, about some kind of blob creature that can eat people. Must have been the living essence of Joe McCarthy having turned into a monster. Hahahahaha!
This classic was great. I watched this one before I'm gonna watch the 88 one. This one was good for an old movie. And it had color. Acting wasn't bad. The blob was so funny looking.
1958 version of "The Blob"
Great movie... Would prob look better at a theater... Loved the actress in it and Steve Mcqueen did a great job as the lead character.. The blob itself was real cool def a cheesy movie.. Love the ending.. Was there a blob 2? Besides the remake? I enjoyed the remake even more the 1988 version with Shawnee smith (saw) Cause I love 80s movies..
Although the lack of technologies this people have put up a good b-movie for the time,I like to see jelly flow through small scale model or move in rewind...maybe it's not scary, but it's still good.
People often describe this as cheesy, but it is actually a really good, suspenseful horror movie. What people hold against this is the "cheesy" effects. Well, they aren't cheesy atall and the effects are even better than we get in some films now. This film has really stood the test of time and you'll find it hard to believe it is from the 1950's.
havent seen this for along time,i think i saw it when i was quite young and it actaully scared me abit hehe it works well,it is creepy and the effects are nice for the time.of course mcqueen is kinda the main focal point.its harmless fun and has a nice open ending which kinda makes u think abit.
Steve McQueen as a young man. Just a fun 50s era monster movie. I missed a chance to photograph the Downingtown Diner when I was in Downingtown, PA in 1994. And it was gone from the lot where it was abandoned when I went back years later..
Terrible, terrible, TERRRIBLE wooden acting! Did I say the acting was terrible? Unfortunately, this movie is a lot of dialogue that is painfully boring to listen to and the actors don't do it any justice at all. Steve McQueen is supposed to be a teen-ager, but is waaaaay beyond his teen-years.
That theme song was hilariously creepy though - it made me laugh!
Of course the special effects arent that good, cause you see, in 1958 there wasntt computers. Despite the blob appear like a walking jam, the sound lack something like creates an enviroment for fear or expectation, this horror classic still deserves to be watched.
"It's the most horrible thing I've ever seen in my life!" No, that's not my review of "The Blob," but it's close. It's actually a line of dialogue from the movie that pretty much sums up the film's essence. I think if a vote were taken for the silliest sci-fi horror movie ever made, this would come out pretty high on the list. The whole film is rather slow paced, possibly because the scriptwriters had a basic premise in mind but nowhere to take it.
I recommend just watching this for the experience. What was surely considered to be a scary movie back in the 1950's is in this day and age quite amusing but nevertheless still very entertaining. It may have been predictable but the acting was pretty good even if the teenagers were played by full grown adults (Steve McQueen's character looked the same age as the police officers) and some of the emotion definitely got across. The blob itself is quite entertaining with the movement they put into it and I actually found the way they did the ending, suggesting there may be a sequel, very amusing too.
I love this film. It gave me nightmares all throughout my childhood. The movie theater scene is classic. The sequel (directed by Larry Hagman!) and remake aren't bad, either.
