Although Troy Duffy is most likely to be deemed Hollywoods biggest Bone Head, I have to confess he has talent. This movie is way up my llist in the top 20. It takes a lot to get to the top 20 and even more to stay there. The entire cast out did themselves especially Willem Defoe. His role was out standing.

Im not an "expert in Nameology" but Willem Dafoe is sick in this movie. This movie is so good "kinda makes me feel like river dancing" The style, direction and the way the story is told is very interesting and works perfect for a crime/investigation type movie.

This was a movie that is not to be underestimated. The plot was a spectacular one, and right off the bat I thought the two brothers, Conner and Murphy, were great characters. The accents were extremely cool, gotta love that!
The premise of the movie is an intriguing one - that these brothers take the law into their own hands, feeling it is their God-appointed duty to rid the world of scum. I can't help but be critical of this, because in reality I believe that we are all in the same boat. The most "righteous" person has darkness withing him or her, and people that think themselves good have the potential for extreme evil. Likewise, the seemingly most vicious and depraved of men have the potential to be redeemed. The fact is, no one can draw the line and say "you are evil, you are not."
That being said, in an ideal world and given that this is a fiction created purely for entertainment, I think the vigilante justice portrayed in the film was quite effective. The two brothers could be likened to superheroes, bringing the evil to justice. In the fictional world, where everything is black and white, where evil men and good men are completely different breeds, the Boondock Saints and the real heroes.
The dialogue was terrific in the film. Most particularly, the speech by the brothers in the court room at the end sent shivers down my spine. This is real film making.
Having praised this movie so much, I was disappointed by the language and sexual content of this movie. Although I really like the flick, I couldn't recommend it to others because of that.

Two religious brothers, Conner (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy (Norman Reedus) MacManus believe that they are on a mission from god. To clean the the world of the evil men, so that the good can live in prosperity. With help from an old friend who knows all the criminals in the city, they hunt down and assassinate those that they feel are wicked. The mob call in a hitman that has been inprisoned for the last 40 years to kill the ?saints?. And while the brothers carry on their mission, a highly intellectual and homosexual FBI agent is on their tail (Willem Dafoe). However, as times goes by, the FBI agent gets more and more confused. He is not certain what to think about the crimes that the saints comitt. Are they in fact a crime? Or are they doing the right thing? He now face a moral dilemma. Should he fight them or help them?

If you don?t think this plot sounds intriguing, there is something wrong with you. The story is highly original and the directing is masterful. This movie is so extremely good that I lack the words to express it. The one and only thing that is negative with this film is that it is shamelessly unknown to most people. The way this movie was promoted was a disaster, it didn?t even reach the cinemas in most country?s. I have still not found an answer to why it is so, but somebody should be fired for it.

Some people may claim that this movie is a rip of movies such as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and generally the whole Tarantino style. The only link I can see is that they are both masterful directors. The director of The Boondock Saints, Troy Duffy is somewhat influenced by the Tarantino time leaps issue. Jumping back and forward through events throughout the movie. However, Duffy uses this teqnique very sparingly and narrowly, which is the only reason why this movie doesn?t achieve a 10/10 rating.

The actors does a fabolous job, and I especially want to mention Willem Dafoe that we see way to little of in hollywood. We have seen him before in both excellent movies (The English Patient) and pure disasters (Speed 2). Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus are both relatively unknown, which is a shame, because they both prove with this movie that they can deliver a good performance.

As mentioned the history is awesome and you can?t avoid being intrigued by the plot. The script itself is excellent, and the dialogue is sharp, funny and memoriable. The prayer that the brothers say before they kill their targets is extremely cool and nice. It sounds much better than the one Samuel L. Jackson says in Pulp Fiction (ok there is a few other small rip offs here and there). The music score is also very variable. It include everything from techno to opera. A mix that really sets the mood.

I think I have covered it all now, and it?s just left for me to say that this is a masterpiece you can?t let go unseen. Go to your local video store and rent it. If they claim that they do not own the movie, threaten them and make them order the movie to the store so that you can rent it. It will be worth it.

All my life I've heard of the hype and praises for a little film that is, The Boondock Saints, not to be mistaken for the little racist cartoon on Adult Swim. Anyways, I've heard all my life that this is a must see movie, that it's a classic, and "Willem Dafoe's greatest character to date". In the words of Kevin Spacey... "WROOOOOONG!!!!". This movie was over glorified and full of itself, trying waaay to hard to be cool and innovative that really, it's an excuse to have blood splatter everywhere and use the f-bomb in every sentence in the place of actual nouns. I'm not that picky of a movie goer. I mention blood and vulgarity, hey, I like Kill Bill and some Tarantino and Kevin Smith flicks, and those are loaded with vulgarity and gore. But this, honestly, was so boring, so overplayed, and so simple in it's desperation to be so clever, that I was checking my phone every 5 minutes to see if I was nearing the end of the movie itself.

Am I being a little harsh giving this movie half a star and something like "Mannequin" a full on 5 star rating? No. And I'll tell you why. At least Mannequin entertained me here and there. This, with it's many slow motioned scenes, and it's few moments to actually display a well written plot, and actual TERRIBLE acting from Dafoe (I want to punch that quoter in the face who said this was his best), is such a pointless movie... Brothers take the law into their own hands and kill people because people do bad things, overly gay detective hunts for them and solves so many clues but is always just ONE step behind them, people die and say f-ck repeatedly. And that's the whole movie, really. The opening was pointless in the meat factory. And the ending was pointless in the church. It starts nowhere and ends just the same. A bunch of pretty boys turned vigilantes. This movie was like Double Dragon but with guns. And Double Dragon was not a good movie fyi. ...Boondocks, I hate you.

One of my faves of all times. Some many quotable lines. Willem Dafoe is outstanding but Rocco takes the cake. I would recommend this movie to my grandmother, it's that good.

Well after years of serching I finally got a copy. Too bad I missed this one back in 1999, wouldve enjoyed it then. I totally understand why they didnt show this in the theaters worldwide, its such a typical "badass is cool" teen typa movie, mindless, stupid gun-totting pap. If youre a bit conservative, this wouldnt be a good movie to watch. Overly exessive cursing.. mindless. absoultely mindless...

On the other hand, whoah damn William Dafoe takes the cake! Awesome acting! --- and the 2 brothers are just a coupla hardknock eyecandies.

This movie is great. The story is a completely different take on the genre. Brutal shoot outs, clever dialogue. The dialogue in this film is hard hitting, clever, and funny in parts. nothing in this film is wrong this is a perfect example of an action movie. It is a movie of revenge, religion and family values. beautifully shot, the director is a vision and has created a masterpiece of a film. Hard to believe that such excellence was made just 8 years ago. A truly stunning film.
Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus are great as the Macmanus brothers. They have a connection like brothers should. Billy Connolly does have a brief appearance as well and his perfomance is subtle but still relevant in the film. Willem Dafoe as a flawless, homosexual cop is unexpected but still great. Excellent acting, perfect direction and a story that is awesome. This is a truly unbelievable film.

One of my fav movies ever. It is very entertaining, not only for the action and the really fun dialog, but also for the great acting. Flanery is great and Dafoe is just a joy to watch always.

I cannot believe how a film of such substandard 'quality'-for lack of better words- can get so much cult recognition. It is so ludicrously over-hyped and cheesy that even watching it whilst inhebriated did nothing to make my viewing more enjoyble.

I'm not sure why this is so popular other than it is a mash up of all of those mid-90s Tarantino rip offs (which shouldn't happen since he borrows heavily) and had really difficult scenes to take serious. It did have style, but it was negated by the worst film scoring - or just bad use of music as any movie I've seen.

It's unbelievable that this movie had such bad reviews when it was first released in 1999. I'm glad flixter's rating of this movie is very high because it's totally deserved.

I had heard about this one for a long time before I finally got around to watching it. I was tired of being asked incredulously "You haven't seen Boondock Saints?!?" so I finally watched it. It was well worth the wait. This one is definitely one of the better shoot-em-up fantasies of recent years. It's the story of twin Irish-Catholic brothers in New York City who envision themselves as avenging angels of God. They go on a spree, killing small-time mobsters like it's going out of style. They feel justified in what they're doing because the men they're killing are all very deserving. There's no real pontificating here...it really just helps make them more likable for running around killing people for no reason. Willem Dafoe turns in a deliciously over-the-top performance as the CSI cop assigned to track them down. He begins to sympathize with the "Saints" and even helps them get away with it. In the end, it's all just an excuse to blow away a bunch of people in some very well-choreographed shootout scenes. If you like gangster shoot-em-ups, you'll love this movie. But, of course, you've probably already seen this one anyway.
