Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier

Director Roger Donaldson (Thirteen Days) has breathed vibrant new life into the classic story of the mutiny on the Bounty. With a dream cast--Mel Gibson, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sir Laurenc...( read more  read more... )e Olivier, Liam Neeson, and Daniel Day-Lewis--and a script by Robert Bolt (Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia), The Bounty takes a revisionist tack through the well-charted waters of an oft-told tale. Hopkins's Captain Bligh is no raving sadist in the Charles Laughton mode. (Laughton played Bligh in the first Mutiny on the Bounty, 1935.) Instead, Sir Anthony plays Bligh as a hard-nosed imperialist explorer simply trying to get the job done in the time-honored manner: on the backs of the poor gobs under his command. Still, when Bligh's suppressed powder keg of rage finally blows, Hopkins is formidable indeed. Mel Gibson gives one of the most soulful performances of his career as mutiny leader Fletcher Christian. He's also at the height of his blue-eyed, buff good looks, and his romance with Tahitian maiden Mauatua (lovely Tevaite Vernette) is decidedly erotic. Liam Neeson is a veritable force of nature as the scrappy seaman Charles Churchill, and Daniel Day-Lewis is sublimely hateful as Master John Fryer, a pompous toady. With special effects to rival those of The Perfect Storm, the alluring eye candy of a tall-masted schooner under full sail, lush tropical greenery, and bevies of bodacious South Sea Islands babes, plus a gripping story line, The Bounty deserves a rescue from undeserved obscurity. --Laura Mirsky

    Hopkins is superbly convincing.

This film was good but with a very slow start.

To start I didn't have a clue that this movie was based on a true story the reason I watched it was because my nan had this movie free with the newspaper.

So before I had this off my nan I didn't know what the story was about w...( read more)ho was in it or anything so I haven't reviewed this movie biasly.

The acting was pretty impressive but the acting was too slow at the start. They didn't put enough effort to make the film good at the start I don't think if they put more effort at the start this movie would of turned out better.

There wasn't alot of a story to this movie I don't think they had enough evidence of what actually happened at that time so they couldn't make this film into a interesting story.

I do think though theres more evidence about what actually happened than what they actually found out maybe they could of spent more time working on the story before releasing the film.

I do also think the director could of put more effort in getting the evidence of what actually happened.

The ending was very good and impressive and if the begining was just as good this film would of been awesome.

This film doesn't deserve to be missed but you may be wasting your money if you pay to watch the film.

I do not think this movie deserves 5 stars or 4 stars like some have rated this but this was most probablly better than average.

This is a good update on the original Munity on the Bounty film. The film has a all star cast with Anthony Hopkins, Mel Gibson, Liam Neeson, Daniel Day Lewis and Edward Fox. This film is much darker and harsh then the original film. Anthony Hopkins gives a all star performance as...( read more) Captain Bligh. He was the high light of the film. Mel Gibson also gives a strong performance. A decent adventure drama film on the high seas. Worth a watch.

Much like Titanic. Not that bad but in the end you know the story way ahead and it never really gets exciting therefore.
