I have heard many bad comments from many intellectual individuals. I will stick to what I have heard and not bother with this movie. My interest was not strong enough to even go see this movie.

I love films that play with your mind and have some kind of moral lesson within. At first I was terrified there was going to be a sequel because of the way it ended but I see that sales and critics made sure that's not going to happen (any time soon at least). The concept is so ...( read more)obviously old that's why the storyline is in 1976. I thought from the second I heard the proposal of the box how stupid it would sound in our day and time. I believe that maybe only the monks in Tibet would refuse or even get taunted before they pressed it. I know I would of pressed it, wouldn't you?

    This film is a mess.
  • January 2, 2010
This movie basically sucked. Why would Diaz take this awful role in the first place is beyond me. Boring as hell and a total waste of time.

Not too sure how to rate this one. I guess it's not a bad movie, but not a good one either. Reminds me a little of Body Snatchers, but very different kind of movie and far from being as good.

What is it about Richard Kelly? He takes multi-layered speculative fiction plots that would feel fine in paperback format, then forces them into films. In a culture where most movies follow a recognizable formula, I find myself scratching my head over The Box.

First, I'm surpr...( read more)ised it got made. It doesn't have crowd pleasing pay-offs. I'm not saying that's bad, just that the left turns in the story would probably turn off those looking for traditional horror movie thrills. I went in expecting a scary movie. The Box has suspense, but it's more of a sci-fi fable.

As a work of art, it's definitely interesting. Not entirely likeable, but maybe that's the point. Maybe I'm not supposed to like every minute of the film, but instead react to its ideas.

The box, the latest movie from Richard Kelly ( Donnie Darko) is an unusual movie that tells the story of a small wooden box that arrives on the doorstep of a married couple, who know that opening it will grant them a million dollars and kill someone they don't know. It is a psych...( read more)ological thriller with lots of suspense, drama and a little bit of action and adventure. The story is very good, the plot is very well developed and convincing although it may be a little hard to follow. It has a fast paced rhythm which keeps you interested. The cast is really good, Cameron Diaz performance is very dramatic and convincing, Jame Marsden alson is excellent with this role that is completely different from what he was doing and Frank Langella as Arlington Steward is superb. In conclusion, The Box is a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat for two hours.

This film was a waste of time, and if anyone wanted to watch this I would tell them not to.
  • December 29, 2009
This film plays more like an X-Files segment. The trailers give off a horror theme, which I was at first going in the film hoping to see. The plot is a discombobulated mess and doesn't come into focus until halfway through the film. It's a bit of a disappointment really. C...( read more)ameron Diaz seems completely out of place in her role. Her accent makes it even worse. James Marsden reminds me too much of his role in Disturbing Behavior. Now I'm not saying this film is horrible, it does have it's moments of good favor. They're just few and far between. The Box leaves off hints of a sequel, and if there isn't one, there should be. Because honestly, what the hell was going on?

Rather good but confusing X-Files like drama of a couple who are presented with a dilemma after a mysterious wooden box with a red button inside is dropped on the doorstep of their home. Press the red button and they'll get 1 million dollars but the downside is 1 person will die ...( read more)because of their decision. What follows is a muddled story which may involve aliens, a gateway to another world, a town full of zombie like people who start bleeding from the nose. This movie doesn't really know what to do with itself and it ends in a rather peculiar way.

Norma and Arthur receive a box at their front door early in t...( read more)he morning. Inside the box is another box and a letter telling them that a Mr. Stewart will be stopping by at 5 o' clock to explain. Before this we're informed that Mr. Stewart had been making these boxes and sending them to many people. This stuff is classified information and somewhere along the line Mr. Stewart is part of a conspiracy from the people in NASA where Arthur also works.

There's lots of talk about Mars, gateways into other places, bright lights which may or may not mean something about the after life. Lots of stuff is quietly unanswered because much of it kind of makes sense if you look at the film in a science fiction way.

When Mr. Stewart arrives at the house, he meets Norma. They go into the kitchen where he explains the box. "If you push this button two things will happen: One of them will be that somewhere, someone you never met will die. The second you will receive a payment of one million dollars." Sounds great, but wait what was the first part? Oh, yeah, If I hit the button I'll kill someone. Heh. Must think this over to make the right decision........

Norma tells her husband about this and he doesn't buy it in fact he kind of eggs her on until she reaches the point where she hits the button. They receive the money and all doesn't seem well. In fact it all boils down to NASA and Mr. Stewart. Let me just tell you it doesn't end well.

Aside from this film being one total mindfuck, it's extremely well made and I have to admit I was slightly giddy by how nostalgic the filmmaking was because it has such a 1970's feel to it. I mean it literally screams the 70s but in a supernatural way like Spielberg's Close Encounters.

My favorite scene would have to be the gateway scene where Arthur is in a library and he meets Mr. Stewarts wife who informs him to choose the one gateway for salvation. After he steps through there's this trippy sequence of blinding white light. That was cool. He's then hovering over his wife while she be in bed except he's in a pool of water which then shatters causing him and the water to fall to the bed. It floods much of the upstairs.

a complete waste of 1 hr and 56 mins of my time
  • December 26, 2009
Well this movie was kind of confusing but the movie was passable:P The man who came to bring the box to the family was creep-y... The story line was interesting but I really didn't want Marsden's character to be arrested at the end.
  • December 26, 2009
Predictable. Watched just to see. Doesn't mean that's the way it is everywhere, but am certain predicaments happen, doesn't mean it's right. Ok movie for a once over.
  • December 26, 2009
it had potential, but it had no suspense, bad acting....

Another risky proposal by Richard Kelly. Yet another risky turn to Cameron Diaz's career. Actually pretty good and hypnotic.
  • December 24, 2009
A very bizarre movie.. It was great, at first I thought this is gonna be just like another thriller movie but it turns out to be pretty unusual movie. The story is not that easy to follow but still interesting.

Richmond, Virginia, 1976. Husband and wife Arthur and Norma Lewis are puzzled one morning to find a mysterious box has been left on their doorstep. The box contains a red button underneath a locked plastic cover and a note saying that Mr Steward will visit them at 5 pm. During th...( read more)e course of that day, Norma is told that the faculty where she teaches will no longer cover her tuition, while Arthur receives notice at the NASA laboratory where he works that he has been rejected for consideration for the space shuttle program. That evening, Norma meets Arlington Steward. He gives her the key to the box and tells her that if they decide to push the button this will kill somebody that they don?t know but they will receive one million dollars. The stipulations are that they are not allowed to ask about Steward?s employers or to tell anybody else. After much debate about whether this is a hoax, Norma decides on impulse to push the button. Mr Steward duly arrives and gives them the one million dollars. Subsequently, Arthur starts to ask questions and tries to have the licence plate on Steward?s car traced. Soon after, sinister things begin to happen, including people following them and behaving strangely. Arthur finds that Steward used to work for NASA but on the day of the Viking 1 landing on Mars, he was hit by lightning and killed. Claiming to be under the direction of the forces that sent the lightning, Steward has the ability to mentally control others. On behalf of his ?employers?, he is engaged in an elaborate experiment to test humanity using the box.

Richard Kelly takes an intriguing story with a lot of potential and adds in a whole other paranormal aspect into it leaving a bemused muddle of a movie.
  • December 16, 2009
I was soooooooo pissed once I finnished watched The Box. After all of that I would have to say its crap. Sorry coz I like Marsden and Diaz BUT this film is waste of time.

  • December 15, 2009
A challenging watch, this one. The story is an interesting concept, and the film is quite beautifully shot throughout, but in the end it's just too long and too damn weird. Diaz and Marsden (an under-rated actor in my book) can only do so much with what they're given, and Frank L...( read more)angella shows once again why he's one of the best, but Richard Kelly is asking too much of the audience here. Not worthy of the slating it's been getting critically, but not what I'd hoped for. Disappointing.
