Brokeback Mountain (60%)

Plot: After viewing the gay ensemble film The Broken Hearts Club--the subtitle of which helpfully points out that it's "a romantic comedy"--you might feel as if you've been offered a discussion conun...( read more read more... )drum not unlike the kind that Mike Myers's Linda "Coffee Talk" Richman would put forward: "The Broken Hearts Club is neither romantic nor comedic. Discuss." What it is, rather, is a gay male version of Steel Magnolias, right down to the funeral scene and hospital visit. While decidedly less melodramatic than that Southern chick flick, it still aspires to a kind of big-group love-in feeling that's only vaguely comic. And romance? Well, there's some somewhere, when the characters aren't carping about how the only thing they're good at is being gay. They all wrestle with their Big Issues--should Patrick (Ben Weber) donate sperm so his sister can have a baby with her lesbian lover? Will cynical Dennis (Timothy Olyphant) finally admit he loves just-out-of-the-closet Kevin (Andrew Keegan)? How will love-'em-and-leave-'em Cole (Dean Cain) feel when he's rejected by the closeted movie star?--but to little effect, despite some snappy one-liners and occasional keen observances of gay culture. Writer-director Greg Berlanti's screenplay still feels about two or three drafts away from completion, and when faced with stalling action, he opts for a montage set to one of many Carpenters' songs (covers, not the actual hits themselves). Kudos go to the acidic Weber for infusing what could have been a whiny character with a dry, intelligent wit, and the surprisingly charming Cain, who makes Cole someone you can't really hate too much despite all his faults--it would be like hating a puppy. If only all the characters were half as appealing. --Mark Englehart

I liked how this gave you a look a different types of gay men from just coming out and having a massive crush(who hasn't been there?), to the total player who finally gets played. Despite the review it IS a romantic film. It may not be the romance youre used to but none the less it is romance.

    I really enjoyed watching this.

The characters are very easy to identify with as they are very human, they might all seem happy but everyone has something to deal with and it was sweet and sad as we get an insight into the lives of these men, gay men, struggling with everything except being gay, it was refreshing.

While the story is narrated in some places by one of the characters it feels like a team movie.

There are some very on the mark one-liners and interesting insights. I did love the 'word references' that popped up on the screen occasionaly.

    lovable movie.

Here we get an inside look into the lifes of a group of friends, all gay men, and their troubles with romance. Very cliché if you ask me, but yet... entertaining... I'm full of bias because I like Olyphant and Braff so much and I also have a tendency to adore straight male actors acting gay.
This is Queer as Folk- the movie as far as I can see. Parts of it is just like the QaF-series, but this movie was first which makes the series the copy-cat.

In t her review it says this"What it is, rather, is a gay male version of Steel Magnolias, right down to the funeral scene and hospital visit." I don't even want to see the straight version of Steel Magnolias. NO Thanks, even if Zach is in it..

A very interesting film. Most definitely not the best gay film out there but it is worth the watch.

Love and friendship within a gay community.

This is worth seeing. Not the greatest, but not bad either. I like the "tag line" - "The shortest distance bewteen friends is not always a STRAIGHT line."

So usually I'm not into the romantic comedy but something about watching the dating habits of a group of gay men made me love this movie.

This movie was okay, but not much more than that. I liked the treatment in terms of all the definitions of queer terms in-between segments, but beyond that the story was a bit cliche.

This is an interesting movie about a group of gay friends. What interested me so much, are the actors involved, they happened to be macho actors yet they can pulled it off without malice

I didn't realise that this was about a group of gay men when I bought it so it was quite interesting to watch with no prior knowledge of the narrative. Zach Braff isn't outstanding, and I prefer his other work, but I was really impressed with Timothy Olyphant's perfomance as well as Dean Cain's (they were the only others I recognised). It's a really cute film and I would recommend it.

A great movie! I had the biggest crush on Dean Caine. Plus it reminds me of the group of friends I had when I first came out.

Funny and Romantic Comedy that had me laughing and crying. It just goes to show you that true friends stick together no matter what.

I only really watched this because it was written by Greg Berlanti, who wrote the CLASSIC Everwood pilot. I was therefore a little disappointed.
It just seems like another typical gay movie, portraying gays as... well... sort of sluts, and having them do predictable gay things, like have lattes in restaurants while cackling away, and so forth.
Given I am gay, I don't think it's a very realistic portrayal. But then again, maybe it is. What do I know.

Pleasantly charming, isnt exactly a blockbuster, but not every flick has to be hey? Nicely put together, the cast is quite watchable and some are well..yum! (Zach Braff, Andrew Keegan, Dean Cain)
Nice one to watch every now and again with a friend and a wine!!

This film is brilliant and a lot of the cast play characters you wouldn't expect them too. I love Zach Braff's line about being Demi Moor in ST. Elmos fire it makes me laugh.

Really enjoyed this film. Not the greatest movie ever made but a fun way to spend 90 minutes. Great ensemble cast - many playing against type.
