Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post
And you thought you were just headed for a weekend getaway.
-
Christopher Orr, The Atlantic
A horror movie embedded in a conspiracy flick embedded in another horror movie-the most inventive cabin-in-the-woods picture since The Evil Dead and the canniest genre deconstruction since Scream.
-
J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader
The climactic one-two punch of special-effects chaos and meta-movie chin stroking should have the fanboys trembling with delight.
-
Stephen Whitty, Newark Star-Ledger
"The Cabin in the Woods" gets at the story underneath the story, and the reason behind the clichés.
-
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
If it's true that you always kill the thing you love, then horror honchos Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard have taken an ax to slasher cinema in The Cabin in the Woods and chopped it up for kindling.
-
Rafer Guzman, Newsday
Everything about "The Cabin in the Woods" is a delicious practical joke...
-
Neil Pond, American Profile
A mind-blowing horror-show cocktail of gods, movie monsters and mythology.
-
Paul Chambers, CNNRadio
What's not to like? Horror fans with a brain will dig the clever script. The gore is there along with a true sense of concern for the victims. If only all horror films could be like "The Cabin in the Woods."
-
John Beifuss, Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)
Some fans may not cotton to its over-the-top evisceration and reanimation of genre history, but I found it exhilarating, like one of those special-issue comic-book splash panels in which the artist tries to squeeze in as many superheroes as possible.
-
Sean Means, Salt Lake Tribune
A smart, and occasionally daring, homage to horror movies that both satirizes the genre and brings new life to it.
-
Kelly Vance, East Bay Express
Whedon & Co. obviously have more fun with this genre than most people.
-
Robert Roten, Laramie Movie Scope
This horror-reality movie is extremely well-crafted. It has some humor to go with all the mayhem and the story keeps you guessing for a while.
-
Cynthia Fuchs, PopMatters
The Cabin in the Woods revisits the formula that lets viewers feel superior (in terms of knowledge) and also anxious (because of that knowledge).
-
Rob Humanick, Projection Booth
It's hard to overlook the transition from smart to smart-assed and the dispensation of credibility for a weightlessly nihilistic punchline.
-
Jim Lane, Sacramento News & Review
... dumbass slasher-movie hokum ...
-
Greg Maki, Star-Democrat (Easton, MD)
I won't be so bold as to declare 'The Cabin in the Woods' the Best Horror Movie Ever Made, but it is sort of the ultimate expression of the genre. 'Genius' is a word I'm toying with.
-
Jeffrey M. Anderson, Common Sense Media
Veteran writer Joss Whedon and first-time director Drew Goddard deconstruct the horror genre like never before.
-
Staci Layne Wilson, Horror.com
Unless you're a Whedon buff, wait for DVD.
-
Michael Dequina, TheMovieReport.com
Goddard and Whedon clearly achieve exactly what they set out to do, even if it is just as clearly not in line with the mass audience's expectations.
-
Eric Melin, Scene-Stealers.com
All the meticulous buildup leads to a hugely satisfying payoff. Despite all its ironic detachment, it has tons of laughs, some truly jaw-dropping moments, and a couple scenes of unexpected poignancy that make it more than a parody movie.

All I've heard about this movie is it's original and amazingly good. While very, very original, I don't quite think it lives up to the hype some people give it. It's good, and one of the better horror movies to come out in some time. But a new classic? Probably not, but then again, a few more viewings could change my mind. All you need to know going into this, is it's about five friends going to cabin in the woods(duh). The rest is really left up to surprise, and for your to discover as you watch. The movie is a funny, cliche filled, puzzle with lots of twists and turns. It's a very fun horror movie to watch and enjoy. If you want to enjoy a fresh, suspense filled horror movie, then this is the one to watch. My personal favorite horror movie of the last ten years is probably "Drag Me to Hell". If you like that movie, then you will love this as both are similar in their tone or mixing humor and horror. Horror fans will love it. Not a horror fan? Then just go hang out in a cabin in the woods and watch something else. -

The satire of the Scooby-Doo group of friends - so disparate that they would never be friends in real life - is rather clever. The unleashing of nightmare creatures is rather crazy-go-nuts. However, the frame story of the corporation's competition is unclear. Why do other countries fail so much at sacrificing? Why don't their victims follow the same personality tropes? -

It was pretty good, not amazingly OMG! super awesome, but I liked it. It was a little hard to understand at first because I just had no idea who the guys in the lab were or what they were doing. Further into the movie though, it's all explained. Cabin in the Woods makes frequent shout outs to a bunch of other horror movies like Friday the 13th, Alien, etc. and I'm almost 100% sure I saw the crazies from The Strangers in this movie too! It was a funny movie, not scary at all, mainly because all the horror cliches are there. The cliches are supposed to be there though to explain why things happen the way they do in horror movies. It was really original and cool. I thought the ending was stupid though. It was pretty dumb, but the references to other horror movies was clever and interesting. I'd definitely watch it again. I especially like the part where Liam Hemsworth's bro took out his dirt bike and revved it up. I was like hellll yeahhh! Too bad that didn't work out. -

Horror movies have taken a steep decline in quality over the past decade. When it is not some crappy remake of an older and much better movie ("Cough" Nightmare on Elm Street), modern horror movies are sadistic torture porn films that go for disgusting the audience rather than actually trying to scare them. Not only does "Cabin in the Woods" manage to be the best horror movie in years, but it is also a true game-changer in the horror genre. I predict many imitators or future horror movies will spawn in this movie's wake and try to emulate the film's masterful balance of straightforward horror and subtle meta-analytical spoof of the horror genre. At the film's heart, it is the same concept as "The Evil Dead", where five teenagers stay in a cabin for a weekend in the middle of the woods, but it is also so much more. The movie goes through a lot of the classic horror movie tropes and cliches, but adds new twists that are incredibly original and take the film in a whole array of interesting directions. The film is also filled with great witty dialogue and tongue-in-cheek humor that manages to bring out the laughs without sacrificing the integrity of the film's characters. The film will scare you, make you laugh, and thrill you beyond imagination. I will not spoil anything more because to give away more of the plot will only take away the fun and pleasant surprises that the film holds in store. Horror movie fans will enjoy how the film both parodies and pays tribute to the genre of horror, and general audiences can enjoy the film even without having to get analytical. -

Dooooode! Words can barely describe how much I loved this movie. All horror fans owe it to themselves to seek this movie out and see it - before anybody tells you anything about it! Seriously, every time I was surprised, it was an enormous, delicious pleasure, and every time I wasn't, I cursed the infernal trailer that ruined it. Shun them! Don't read reviews! In fact, why are you even reading this? Get out and see it. Hmm. How do I tell you about this movie without telling you anything about the movie? It's ingenious the way this film plays with the conventions of the rural slasher genre. It puts the tropes in an entirely new context, explaining the maddeningly suicidal behaviour of the stock characters in a new way that makes so much sense. It's peppered with references to every single "five young doofuses get themselves butchered" movie ever made, in ways that are artful and, at times, wonderfully subtle. This movie is as ingenious as the design of Marty's bong. It may be my new favorite horror film, or at least in the top five. The ending had me in gleeful stitches for like fifteen solid minutes. It's probably the biggest and most spectacular shitstorm I've ever seen in the history of horror cinema. -

The Cabin in the Woods is closer to a horror spoof than anything resembling actual terror. Yes, this is one of those oh so hip it hurts movies that deconstructs the genre much in the same way that Scream played with conventions back in 1996. This is the horror of the new millennium. Updated and revised. Scream was scarier. Cabin's plot is so wrapped up in tongue in cheek sensibility that the half hearted attempts to build suspense are routinely undercut with laughs and sarcasm. It's pretty smug. Yet if Scream was more frightening, The Cabin in the Woods is smarter. The script goes further as it questions society's ease with violence as entertainment. True, that isn't a concept that is as original as the filmmakers seem to think it is, but gosh if it isn't compelling as all get out. A polarizing work - this has become the darling of critics and fanboys alike much to the puzzlement of mainstream tastes. What really takes this to the next level is the final third that quite frankly, blew my mind. It follows through on what it sets up in a most satisfying way. Again I wont reveal anything here. Let's just say that it's a dazzling display. -

Still, I left the theater wishing they stop making the same old, same old, even the deconstruction of horror is gettin tired anymore. Nonetheless, a decent scare ... and a celebrity cameo right at the end. -

A lot of the plot and story seemed slapped together, especially the ending. I can't understand why the ratings would be this high on a film of such low quality. Being original or breaking genre boundaries cannot justify a bad film. -

Poor Drew Goddard. He can't seem to avoid being overshadowed on his projects. 2008's Cloverfield marked his debut (as a writer), but all the attention went to JJ Abrams, and even though he both directs and co-writes "The Cabin in the Woods", it seems Joss Whedon is poised to take a lot of the credit Goddard deserves. In any case, this film easily puts him on the radar as major talent, if Cloverfield hadn't already convinced the world (it convinced me...) "Cabin" is definitely one of the most creative movies I've seen in a long, long time, and I'm fully expecting it to be the zaniest movie I see this year (though I'd love to be proved wrong by something else). As one would expect from a Whedon script, the dialogue is witty and the comedic timing (so important to this particular film) is spot-on. The performances of the mostly unknown cast of teenagers are as cheesy as they should be, but most of it is thankfully intentional, and Fran Kranz is a standout as the cliche stoner dude, who would probably make for a perfect Shaggy in any future Scooby Doo projects. If Raimi's Evil Dead movies were a somewhat tongue-and-cheek take on horror, then Cabin takes it about 10 steps forward, becoming a full-on satire that still packs some scares. But don't go for the horror - go to have your mind blown by the sheer inventiveness, and for God's sake don't read anything else about the plot before you watch it! Let's just hope Goddard jumps back on the Cloverfield train next. -

The Cabin In The Woods seems like a homage to one of my favorite movies, "The Evil Dead". Throughout the film I laughed, I jumped and I was sucked in.The overall mystery of what was happening kept me invested. Overall I would recommend it to horror fans and fans of movies in general. Though I wouldn't recommend it to the squeamish and to people who are incapable of having a good time. -

Those instances were balanced out with great humor and acting from some of the cast. -

'Cabin in the Woods' feels like B movie genius, and it pretty much is. But there is a lot more at work here. Not only is this film about delivering laughs, a few scares, a great script and a memorable story, its about turning a genre on its head and changing the way you view movies. The horror may not be satisfying, but its easy to look past it because of its other unique qualities. 'Cabin in the Woods' is original, satisfying, entertaining, and full of pulp, blood, and B movie goodness. No one should miss this one, it is one to remember. -

i really enjoyed this film. on the one hand it was ridiculous fun, but it is tough to score because it was more of a counter-genre exercise than a true story. part horror/part horror spoof the film sets up stereotypes in the first act, deconstructs them in the second act, and then the third act just goes ballistic as it descends into utter chaos. the whole things goes haywire, in mostly excellent ways. a part of me understands what they were doing in making the film how they made it, and part of me wishes the third act was longer and more detailed. overall, solid film. -

I actually enjoyed it and had some good laughs.I don't think anyone have seen a movie like this before...The script provides plenty of scares and gore but, also gives us some tension-relieving laughs with Whedon's trademark sly humor. Everything is blended together well by director Goddard, who gets us primed and ready for the 'all hell breaks loose' final act. A real horror movie blast! In an industrial facility, two technicians are preparing for their day on an unknown operation. Meanwhile, five friends are preparing for their trip to a remote cabin owned by Kurt's cousin. On the way, they stop for gas and have an encounter with the strange local who owns the gas station. While drinking and relaxing at the cabin, they discover a basement filled with interesting artifacts. -

A riveting, funny, creatively captured horror film concerning five young adults who journey into the woods, not knowing that they are being surveyed by government agents for reason unknown, and how they encounter unspeakable creatures and horrors that do not seem to make any sense. God bless Joss Whedon's creative screenplay for possessing so much pizazz, uniqueness, and balls-out scares and action sequences. Some things near the end of the film could have been explained together, the conclusion does feel sort of rushed, but this is one of the better horror films to come out in quite some time. Not a great film, it narrowly misses that category, but Whedon and director/co-writer Drew Goddard do an absolutely fabulous job "inceptionizing" their movie, bludgeoning the third-wall with such fearlessness, and packing their script with so many twists and turns, it is hard to not be in awe of the originality on display here. Whedon is proving to be one of the more promising young talents in Hollywood, and this is yet another notch he can add to his belt. -

It's hard to enjoy anything that the Horror genre spews forth nowadays. All of the indolent found-footage drivel, futile attempts of channeling horror through exorcism, and limp attempts to remake the classics, have really curbed expectations. Luckily the mounting cynicism, didn't prevent me from checking out, "The Cabin in the Woods". What a breath of fresh air. In many ways, what the movie accomplishes, is very similar to what the original "Scream" was able to achieve nearly 20 years ago. Like "Scream", "The Cabin in the Woods" is able to successfully parody the genre, and at the same time, deliver all of the goods that we love about Horror movies. Once the door is unhinged, "The Cabin in the Woods' comes out of the gate swinging. The viewer is then pummeled with dark humor from a surprisingly entertaining cast, and drenched in a crescendo of unadulterated violence. Everything moves at a break neck pace, and for the most part, the execution is on the money. The film isn't without it's faults. The most notable shortcoming, is the convoluted ending. Despite the disappointment of the climax, there's plenty here to enjoy. "The Cabin in the Woods" was a pleasant surprise, that I would certainly recommend .
