At breakfast, Jane announces that she and Ralph are getting married the next week. All Jane and Ralph want is a small wedding with the immediate family and no reception. However, at dinner that night all Ralph's parents talk about are the big weddings they gave their daughters and everything escalates. All of a sudden, it is a big wedding breakfast with hundreds of guests. The problem is that for 12 years, Tom has been saving money to buy his own cab and license, but now that he can, all of his money is going towards a wedding neither he, or Jane or Ralph really want.

    Tom Hurley (Borgnine), es un padre de familia con la ilusión de dejar su viejo taxi por uno más grande y más bonito, para el que lleva ahorrando casi 12 años. Taylor) dentro de una semana. Jane y Ralph quieren tener una boda sencilla y nada costosa, a la que asistan sólo un puñado de invitados.

    El filme está basado en un drama televisivo escrito por Paddy Chayefsky. Para su adaptación cinematográfica, el mismo Chayefsky escribió el guión en colaboración con Gore Vidal. Muchas de las situaciones más intensas en The Catered Affair tienen lugar en la cocina de la familia. Ahí saldrán a la luz confesiones, frustraciones guardadas, discusiones que pondrán en entre dicho la supuesta felicidad de Tom y su esposa Agnes (Bette Davis). El hogar de los Hurley, en el barrio del Bronx en Nueva York, terminará siendo un caótico lugar en el que habitan el chantajista Jack (Barry Fitzgerald, simpaticón), hermano de Agnes, ambos de origen irlandés, y el hijo menor, Eddie (Ray Stricklyn), pronto a entar en el ejército.

    Dirigida por Richard Brooks, The Catered Affair hacia un reflejo de los valores familiares de los 1950, evidentemente conservadores, por ejemplo, en esa escena en la que Jane y Ralph están a punto de tener relaciones, pero la recatada Jane le dice que mejor vayan al cine, mientras guardan una catre reclinable.
