Narrated by Lily Tomlin, this acclaimed documentary takes its name from Vito Russo's groundbreaking book. The filmmakers examine the subtext of more than 100 Hollywood movies -- including Spartacus, R...( read more

In the trajectory of GLBT cinema, one is bound to analyze society as it sees such a rare and forbidden topic. From the first tabooed silents to the more open modern films, this documentary provides insight into the reasons behind the homophobic public. Covering over one hundred films with homosexual under- and overtones, you are likely to think beyond the norm; why IS the unknown minority enclosed, ostracized and ridiculed? Although it may be an uncomfortable viewing experience for the majority, it informs straightforwardly, providing accounts and details that will express the fact that all are human regardless of the sexual preference.
I was surprised to see that one of Edison's first "movies" was of three men - one playing a violin and the other two dancing together! Gay or not, this is a valuable piece of history. For gays - a view the rocky road we've travelled and hope for the path ahead; for the rest, hopefully some understanding and acceptance. The hoopla over the "Brokeback" kiss made me uncomfortable. There were a lot of great kisses long before that. Tom Hanks says (in this piece) no matter whom you love, it's still spelled with the same four letters L O V E and pronounced the same way.
I'm shocked that no one on my list has seen this. I DVr'd it off of Logo and we watched it tonight.
You know, it's funny... In the heterosexual world a generation is 20 or 30 years, but in the gay world a generation lasts more like 5 to 7 years...so I've only experienced a few generations.
The Celluloid Closet (perfectly narrated by Lily Tomlin) gave me so much insight into how the world (US via Hollywood) was for gay people before I ever came along.
And, this made me laugh, as it pointed out gay subtext in film from the 1910s to 1994ish (it was made in 1995), I laugherd because I had seen scenes I was sure had gay undertones, but then dismissed it assuming I think everything is gay ;-)
And it also made me happy...that Hollywood and perception of gay people in America has changed even more, for the better, in the years since this documentary was made.
Good for everyone to see, even heterosexuals. It'll make you think, and give you a historical perspective. I can guarantee it'll make you think of things in ways you never have before.
One of the rare times when the film outdoes the book -- and a documentary at that! Well worth repeated viewings.
I saw this at the movies when it first came out to a packed audience. I would like to see a part two with all the recent movies that could be added.
Very good historic look at how the gay man has been represented in the movies over the years - a must for those just coming out of the closet to understand how gay rights have moved on very rapidly in a very short period of time.
