    Good movie, but horrible sequel.
  • September 27, 2009
The sequel to the Hustler where Eddie is now much older. instead of playing pool, he is the guy funding it. If you like Tom cruise you will like this movie, if you don't like Tom Cruise, you will still like this movie because he acts like a moron pretty much the whole time. All a...( read more)ctors do very well in all portrayals.

Scorsese, fantastic! Newman, awesome! Cruise, not so good! I try very hard not to think of this as a sequel to The Hustler, I wish it wasn?t. It was a little ordatious and arrogant of Scorsese really!
  • September 2, 2009
Not just about the game of pool but about the life of becoming a hustler.
  • August 28, 2009
great film..what do you expect when Newman is in it
  • August 18, 2009
    what a surprise !
considering how many talents involves (scorsese, newman, cruise, and don't forget turturro and whitaker,in a small role),i didn't expect this to be that..MONOTONE

    Could be Scorsese's worst movie.

Your afternoon will be hardly "misspent" if you watch this enjoyable film, then "rack 'em up" again and watch the even better "The Hustler".

Its story is entertaining, interesting and full of surprises on several levels. At its simplest, it's a kind of a "Karate Kid" of the pool halls. Digging deeper, though, you'll find a morality play about innocence, experience, corruption and redemption. And a case study of the me...( read more)eting of middle age and careless youth, among other things.

The characters here, and the performances which bring them to life, cannot be praised enough. Eddie is wonderful?cool, astute and world-weary, but also tender, vulnerable and not always in control. I like Newman here better than in any movie since Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, although Eddie and Butch are likeable for totally different reasons. Newman may not always have starred in the greatest pictures, but, in case there was any doubt, The Color of Money shows him as a master of the art of acting.

Cruise's characters are always appealing and entertaining, but Vincent is clearly the first role he's really been able to sink his teeth into. And he's never had a co-star of Newman's calibre to spar with. Their interaction is the centerpiece of The Color of Money, and it's always engaging and believeable.

well if it wasn't scorsese's film, i'd love to give this film 4 stars or even maybe more, because this is a pretty enjoyable movie with superb performance by paul newman and quite good job done by young tom cruise.,

I think I may have a soft spot for films like these - showing America at night with pop/rock music in the background, thus creating a soothing romantic atmosphere. But it's also nice to see Eddie Felson is doing all right after all these years - in an equally captivating story (b...( read more)e sure to watch "The Hustler" first).

    Great combo cruise, newman

The first half of this movie oozes cool. The set up is so great because you know Fast Eddie and you are automatically hooked. Paul Newman is brilliant giving us another chapter in the life of a legendary character. And to see Tom Cruise in all his dumb guy, cocky asshole glory is...( read more) fun to watch. And of course, it's directed masterfully by Marty in full on show off mode, pulling off shots and transitions with a flair that any Casino fan such as myself can appreciate. If you are going to be excessive (this movie screams eighties excess), at least you get to watch a guy like Scorsese blow his load and not feel jipped. My problem came in the later half of the movie where I really feel the film falls apart. The ending was head scratching and there were times where the music was irritating as hell. Great showings by the dependable Turturro and Whitaker, but I wish they would have focused more on the relationship between Newman and his woman.

    Paul Newman was the king.

Really dissapointing to see Newman win the Oscar for his role in this film when he had so many other memorable roles that went un-awarded by the academy but never-the-less much deserved as he brings this movie to its full form, and brings back a character that is very memorable.

this movie dissapointed me, the acting was ok and scoseses directing was good, i was suprised to find that i found some of scrseses directing choices to be unnessary and i am a huge scorsese fan, i loved the pool shots he did but the character shots he did felt were unnessary. t...( read more)he writter is a hack and was trying to hard he made cruise look like a douchbag and newman like a slease ball. i felt that they should have done it that newmans character sees cruises at a pool hall and they deside to play and cruse plays cocky but not act cocky which they made him act cocky. they should have made newman hustle cruise by losing anbecuase cuise just wants to win and will do anything for it. newman then takes cruise under his wing and trys to tach him the ways of pool off the table. but cruise dosent listen so whne theres the big show done he tells cruise to throw the game, newman knows he wont so he bets all of his money on cruise becuase he knows cruise will do anything to win and thats what seperates a winner from a hustler, cruise and Fast eddie. i felt they focused to much on newman like he was trying to make a come back as fast eddie and i thought that was the wrong choice, fast eddie had his movie it was the hustler and they never ever should have shown fast eddie play ,it would of been like he knows hes had his turn and his moment and its over know. crusies hair was out of control it looked like something out of barton fink i thought he acted and dressed completle the wrong way but thats not this faultits the writters. it was more fun to watch it but you will need to have seen the hustler to really enjoy it if not you would think it is shit which it is but it was fun

Young Tom Cruise all giddy with smiles and a pool stick to do ninja wif. Newman is the movie who tries to shake off the rust from years out of the pool game since 1960's The Hustler, which was an interesting transition. Cool but not exciting.

Pretty cool pretty coo pretty koo pretty kewl pretty kool. Lazy Eye Forrest Whitaker was ballin and hustlin.
  • January 19, 2009

I saw this again...20 some odd years later last night. Well worth the watch. Who's voice at the beginning descibes 9 ball??? No looking it up!!!!!!!
  • December 30, 2008
It has its momemts, but only a few. Could be Scorsese's worst work.

Sorry, but 8-Ball just doesn't do it for me.

This a good film. Tom Cruise and Paul Newman give stellar performances. If your a pool junkie then you will like this film. The story is decent and has a good supporting cast.

I'm probably one of 23 people on the entire planet who didn't like The Hustler and its sequel, The Color of Money wasn't worlds better. Paul Newman was great and Tom Cruise generally makes you want to slap him with the exception of a few scenes. That Forest Whitaker scene was kin...( read more)d of heartbreaking and the ending was a textbook example of anticlimactic. Maybe with this one, like its predecessor, I'm missing the point. While The Color of Money isn't Martin Scorsese's best work, the direction gets 2nd billing behind Newman with the sharp and snappy dialogue getting a very close 3rd.

The story of an aged pool-hustler (Newman) who finds a talented younger version of himself (Cruise) and takes him under his wing. The story is a bit conventional but Scorsese has some good set-pieces and his direction gives it a flashy edge. The pool scenes are extravagant with S...( read more)corsese and Schoonmaker's editing being awesome. Newman, Cruise and Mastrantonio were great in their roles.

This is a great Cruise/Newman film.

I don't know why some critics like Roger Ebert found this follow up to the Hustler to be disappointing. To me, this is a flawless film with Newman in top form. He was only nominated for the Hustler, he actually won an Oscar for the Color of Money.

Tom Cruise isn't bad here...( read more) either as a hot shot who Newman takes under his wing. While Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is also excellent as Cruise's girlfriend. I love this movie and I don't even like pool. The Color of Money is a very under-rated movie. To me it's even one of Martin Scorsese's best. It's worth checking out.
  • October 15, 2008
Cruise and Newman are masters and while the relationship between the two was a little iffy and confusing, it was a good movie nonetheless.
  • October 15, 2008
Such a damn good movie...Watch it now!!!
  • October 12, 2008
this is an excellent film. the story was very interesting and its easy to invest in the characters. this semi-sequel wasnt quite as good as the hustler, but it did flow a little better. newmans performance was better in the original, but he was very good in this one and deserv...( read more)ed his oscar. cruise was asked to play a character that annoys a bit too much, but the fact that he annoyed me means he played the character well. over all a great future classic.

Newman just dominates this flik...as he should. Never liked TC. This movie just plays out his natural disgusting persona. Good story, great acting, great pace.

    Watchable film with average storyline.
  • September 8, 2008
Esta bien, pero ¿a quien le interesa tanto el billar?
  • August 16, 2008
This is an underrated Scorsese film. Newman and Cruise work well together here. The supporting cast also does some interesting work. Newman deserved the Oscar for this but it should have been his 4th or 5th Oscar. This movie left me wanting more.
  • August 7, 2008
Great to see Paul Newman return as Fast Eddie Felson.
  • July 12, 2008
