The heroic Edmond Dantes, a young sailor in nineteenth century France who safely returns the ship to port after his captain dies. Back on land and enjoying a promotion to captain, Dantes joyfully reunites with his fiancée Mercedes, a beautiful woman who is also the object of affection of Fernand Mondego. Dantes' happiness is destined to be short-lived as the jealous Mondego, ship's purser Danglars and tailor Caderousse conspire to frame the young man for a crime he didn't commit. The dastardly scheme succeeds, and the innocent Dantes is sentenced to life imprisonment by the corrupt De Villefort. Dante's escapes only to stumble upon the Count of Monte Cristo's treasure and seeks revenge on his enemies. Richard Chamberlain, Kate Nelligan, Louis Jourdan, Trevor Howard and Donald Pleasence give an outstanding performance to this timeless novel written by Alexandre Dumas

For a made for TV movie this was very good. I had to watch it twice to get the full impact of who the main characters where and their relationship with each other. It had a lot of good acting and a great plot. And better yet a good ending.. I hate good movies with sad endings.

This is a great movie! It is closer to my heart than the new one! Richard Chamberlain is FANTASTIC! This shows that it's rated "R" but it's not, it was a made for TV movie. On my "In Another Century" list. VHS.

Worth-watching! Please do watch it! incredibly nice movie.. Like Dr. Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Filipinos, who loved this work of Alexander Dumas, I do really love it very much.. Ang ganda talaga, it tells about friendship, love, and vengeance..

Even though I liked the recent Jim Cavaziel version better, this adaptation was much closer to the Alexandre Dumas novel. Richard Chamberlain was excellent as Dantes.

Not bad version which is more based on the Dumas novel than the most recent movie. However the 2002 version remains one of my fav movies

My favorite all time movie! The story line, the passion, have all come through in this film. It is probably not as good as the book, but the storyline transcends all time!

Probably the best version, though I can't think of one that wasn't superb. You can't go wrong with a Dumas story.

This movie didn't need to be remade; Richard Chamberlain is marvelous ad Edmond Dantes, counting off the targets of his vengance.

When I sat down to watch this, the script was so fascinating that it made me pick up the book. from the library. And I hadn't been to the library in a very long time.
