  To me, this was thoroughly disappointing from start to finish in almost every respect possible. I went in hoping to see something at least interesting, but I found something that didn't really know what it wanted to be. The screenplay seemed almost naive at points, with a multitu...( read more)de of scenes(especially early into the film) that, for me, failed to add anything to the film or to work towards character building, and merely appeared as failed attempts to do so.
  
  The film was supposed to be the story of the Countess as told from the point of view of someone who regarded her with affection but that emotion wasn't palpable at all throughout the film, nor was there any apparent chemistry between the two characters that were supposed to be deeply in love. The charater of Elizabeth Bathory was, therefore, presented, seemingly, from the outside, in an attempt to somehow blend the legends with a warmer, more realistic perhaps, outlook. Eventually, what I found was that this approach, or at least the way it was executed, managed only to weaken the strength of the film, literally dissolving any sort of substance it might have otherwise had.
  
  The acting, something i was expecting at least would be good, was anything but. Most of the main characters seemed unconvincing. Anamaria Marinca who was able to express so much emotion in "4,3,2" was almost invisible here, in a part that would have required far more (albeit interiorized) strength and consistence.
  
  Not everything about The Countess is bad. There are, of course, good aspects, one of which being the music and others being the sets and costumes, which look very good. There are also some good scenes, two in particular stand out, and the character of Count Dominic Vizakna is quite well acted.
  
  Perhaps I am being too harsh in judging this film, but unfortunately I can't shake the feeling of disappointment above all else that it has caused.

  A fine movie. Very enjoyable, but a bit rushed. Some of the scenes were so fast forward that even resembles those movie interpretations by bunnies within seconds.

  A fair piece directed, written & starring Julie Delpy about the (reverse) story of the "Blood Countess" Elizabeth Bathory in Hungary (1560-1614). Delpy is relatively better in acting compared to her directing & writing. The narrative looks rather plain, too straight forward & lac...( read more)ks of in-depth description & development. Only wonders why the film was in English, instead of German or even French?
