J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader
[A] respectable update.
-
Peter Rainer, Christian Science Monitor
While it loses the charm of Romero's low-budget clunkiness, it is in all other regards superior.
-
Ian Buckwalter, NPR
The incoherence is made all the more disappointing because Eisner displays a great deal of raw talent for the genre's tone and set pieces.
-
Keith Uhlich, Time Out New York
Unlike Romero's film, what's missing is a trenchant sense of connection to our historical moment.
-
A.O. Scott, At the Movies
It's kind of crazy, but it's also pretty smart. And if your nervous system can stand it, you should see it.
-
Rick Groen, Globe and Mail
The blood is certainly convincing these days, but it generally flows only in the safest and most inoffensive, uncontroversial directions.
-
Steve Newton, Georgia Straight
Activism-minded moviegoers will welcome the second coming of Romero's cautionary tale, but they'll have to sit through one hell of a nasty pitchfork scene to get the message.
-
John Hanlon, Big Hollywood
Some genuinely scary scenes aren't enough to save this tired and unnecessary remake.
-
Jeff Beck, Examiner.com
If you haven't seen that many horror films, you might find it thrilling, but for those of you who are familiar with the genre you will most likely find yourself bored, and wishing for something more original.
-
John Gholson, Cinematical
Don't be afraid of the horror remake stigma here; be afraid of The Crazies' constant, electric hum of dread.
-
Dave White, Movies.com
Without giving a lot away, you'll be creeped a handful of times.
-
Joshua Starnes, ComingSoon.net
It doesn't stray that far from its conventional horror roots but what it does, it does ... adequately. Which, if we're honest, is a lot more than you expect out of something called The Crazies.
-
Mark Pfeiffer, Reel Times: Reflections on Cinema
Without any palpable sense of terror or political subtext, the film is analogous to its not-exactly-zombie townsfolk who stagger about purposefully but blankly.
-
Mike Edwards, What Culture
Possibly worth watching for a bit of a laugh if you're a fan of Romero, or horror generally, but it's nothing that'll be remembered for long after you leave the theatre.
-
Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed
A goofy but entertaining and creepy horror film...
-
Philip Martin, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
Remake of the George Romero film features Timothy Olyphant as the sheriff of a peaceful small town where things begin to go horribly awry. Meh.
-
Brian Orndorf, BrianOrndorf.com
"A more direct shot of scares, gussied up with overtly slick filmmaking that spends more time on technical challenges than it does lacing together a consistently nail-biting motion picture."
-
Rob Gonsalves, eFilmCritic.com
Acted and executed competently enough, but doesn't take the premise anywhere fresh.
-
Annlee Ellingson, Moving Pictures Magazine
There are questions that would have been major issues in a better film, but here they're just quibbles among scary-enough set pieces.
-
Kevin A. Ranson, MovieCrypt.com
A decent disaster film masquerading as a horror flick.

I must admit the Movie "The Carriers" was alot better than this one. Well actually this one was a waste of time and 3.50 Francs.

2010s version of The Crazies is one of the better horror remakes in recent years but then as fun as the original was, it was ripe for an update. They got the cast right and most of the usual cliches are thankfully absent but strangely enough, I think it's modern technology that let's this contemporary version down. You know they'll never get away and at the same time you know deep down that they probably shouldn't either! A good film but it just lacks a certain something I can't quite put my finger on.

"THAT SHI CRAY." That was my response after watching "The Crazies". The crazies in the movie are CRAY. It's not the usual mindless zombies that we're used to; these guys are smart, use tools, communicate, and set traps. As you can imagine, you don't wanna run into these guys. There's one scene in particular that works on every level that a horror movie should (Car wash scene). Exquisitely shot and riveting. You will be tense in a number of scenes. Unfortunately, the rest seems like a big ball of mash that seems sloppily put together.

A well made horror remake thats tense and quite scary. In the style of horror classic such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre its scary without blood and gore.

A small town finds itself under seige from the military when its water supply is contaminated by a biological weapon that turns its inhabitants into psychopathic killers. The Crazies is a remake of a (rather bad) George Romero film from the 1970s that had a promising concept but failed in its execution. This updated version follows the formula of other Romero remakes by upgrading the visuals and production value while at the same time gutting the story of any satirical or sociological aspects leaving a competent but rather generic horror film that barely explores its underlying concepts, instead relying on by the number horror film "scares" and gore. The characters are the usual B-movie stereotypes which don't offend in any way, but at the same time make little impact on the imagination and as a result are very difficult to care about. The big twist in the tale that I patiently waited to lumber over the horizon arrived on cue, but was done with so little cinematic impact (a line of computer text, if you can believe it) that it had completely the opposite of the desired effect and felt like a total damp squib. Not terrible by any means but both 28 Days Later films told a tale that was pretty much identical, and did it with far more flair and imagination.

Surprising solid. Definitely a few too many "convenient" moments, but that's common for horror films. Overall, I really liked this one. I definitely recommend it!

The only thing that really bothered me about this film was the fact that certain people would get caught in a nasty situation, then some other person would bail them out of trouble. They just happened to be at the right place at the right time. It was okay the first time, but after the fourth time I was like seriously? They must be some lucky bitches.
oh and I really liked the ending. I was hoping it would have an ending like that, and it did! hahaha classic.

Newscaster: We want to update you on late-breaking news. A massive fire in Ogden Marsh continues to rage, and high winds are preventing fire teams from containing the deadly blaze. Now information is still coming in, but what we currently know is an explosion rocked the Daycon Pendril chemical plant early this morning, with eyewitness reports of a 400 foot fireball that lit-up the sky. We also have reports of another explosion at a nearby Clark fueling station...

Decent horror movie. I enjoyed it and do recommend anyone to watch.

A interesting film, but drags on a lot, and I mean a lot.

A mad-house of big scares, chills, thrills and suspense. A smart, spine-tingling and nerve-frying edge of your seat horror thrill-ride. One of the best horror movie remakes since 2003's Dawn of the Dead. A pulse-racing, adrenaline-fulled roller-coaster of a movie. An exhilarating blood bath of fun. A stylish, creepy and wickedly well-crafted film. It's brilliant, riveting and mind-blowing thriller. It's tense, throat-tightening, heart-pounding and eye-popping. It's a horror movie that i can actually say is a great film. Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell are terrific. A surprisingly strong movie with great and compelling performances. A haunting and utterly terrifying experience that's truly breathtaking and will chill you to the bone.

Pretty good, but it suffers a little from "well that was convenient" syndrome. Overall I'd say worth checking out if you're in the mood for an almost a zombie movie.

A fairly good horror film, a re-make of the same title by George A.Romero. Not seen the original. This has a good cast and production value. It starts well but gets a little drawn out towards the end. Not a classic but well worth a looky.

I was expecting a lame clone of 28 Days Later, but was surprised by this movies character development. They are not all mindless infected. This leads to much more depth then any of the other zombie/infected movies could ever achieve. The action was intense, but the suspense was par for this type of movie...you can always expect an infected person to be standing silently in the room, or to pop out of nowhere. Also, some of the logic was flawed, but over all it was a decent action/horror.
-
One of those very rare remakes that actually outshine the original. Of course, considering George Romero's 1973 flop, that isn't saying much. I found it entertaining but unexceptional.

There's not a lot to be said about The Crazies. It's a dull movie made for people who are easily entertained. Usually these types of movies are dumb fun, but while there's plenty of dumb, I didn't see any fun anywhere. It begins in the standard movie version of a midwestern Iowa town (in Hollywood, everything between New York and L.A. is stuck in some sort of 1950s time warp), where a figher jet carrying a new type of biological weapon has gone down in the swamp from which the town gets its water supply (Iowa's famous swamps- what, you've never heard of Iowa alligators?). This biological weapon was designed to de-stabilize populations by turning the infected into homicidal maniacs. Only the town sheriff and his doctor wife have the wherewithal to figure out what's actually happening while everyone else in town goes b-a-n-a-n-a-s. Less subtle than a bugs bunny cartoon, the actors recite their lines as if they're blunt objects used to beat the audience over the head. Movies like this don't give their audience any credit and assume that we're just as dumb as the film-makers. There's simply not an original or clever idea in the whole thing.

So it's basically a wash. The film started off good enough, but i quickly lost interest and couldn't wait for it to end. Then they go and push off the ending for a sequel, which every film does nowadays. I hope I don't have to see it.

The Crazies does just about everything right, that so many horror movies get wrong, it's actually terrifying. The Crazies is easily the best horror/suspense film of the year. There are not to many films of the genre to come out and be as good as this. Every film dircter/producer should watch this film and learn from it. I loved The Crazies, but there are many things that occur that turn your stomach upside down. It is brutally intense and the end will have you cheering and crying all at the same time! Great Film!
