ryder and lewis are two of my favourite actors, but unforunately and surprisingly i found a lot of overacting in this film. overall, i do think this is a good adaptation though, must-see for those who actually enjoyed the play (not just those who've had to endure it in high school because you'll be just as bored with the film) for this is miller's adaptation.

This movie is pretty incredible.Yet another movie that Daniel Day Lewis will just blow you away.He is an amazingly Powerful actor with such a calm demeanor on the surface. He puts so much passion into his roles,I don't know of too many actors that are of his caliber.Winona Ryeder also did a really good job in this as well.I didn't know the whole story behind the Salem witch trials before this.It is absolutely absurd that a handful af adolescent girls with nothing better to do than be bitchy and spiteful could carry so many innocent townspeople to their deaths.Anyways if you have not seen this you really REALLY should,Very worth the watch!

I just saw this again over the weekend. I forgot about the wonderful performances and I recall reading the book years ago. Fascinating adaptation.

This movie is about a town that found a group of people dancing in the woods. They thought they were doing witchcraft.
-
This movie was surprisingly good. It had an unexpected twist of creepy sociopathy, not to mention that the script was very smart. The ending was so-so, but the overall plot was excellent.
-
The book is WAY better. Read the book if you're interested in the synopsis. the movie just kills the story.

Ah the persecution of "witches". Man some of those people back then were idiots.
Innocents were dying all the time while these stupid trials went on.
The movie is hard to explain but Winona Ryder plays her role all too well and Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing. -
Intense, wonderful adaptation of the stage hit. The whole cast (particularly Joan Allen) is marvelous...

My eyes were practically filled with tears by the end of this movie (and I don't cry for movies.) I was taken aback by the strength of John, the wickedness of the girls, and most of all the stupidity of the court. I couldn't believe that this was allowed to take place. God bless those who were lost.

oy that was interesting and i really got into it like yelling advice at the tv :) and i think that means its a good movie :)

favourte arthur miller play hytner brings to the big screen with fabulous cast and wonderfully told although court scene could have done with a bit more emotion still a cracking film tho

This movie, based on a play, is benefited by a powerful performance by Daniel Day-Lewis. Winona Ryder also gives a convincing portrayal of a manipulative girl that will go to any extent to get what she wants.
-
The rating I'm giving this is based soley on the plot, and because I find the Salem witch trials a very interesting story. Yet, the fact that Winona Ryder portrayed the main role, turned me off more than a little bit. Daniel Day-Lewis was incredible though in this film.

I thought this movie had the potential to be great, but it is only mediocre. Ryder's performance particularly disappointed me. I felt like I had seen it before in her other films. Contrarily, I enjoyed Day-Lewis' portrayal of John Proctor.

Honestly, I don't see why everyone's griping.
I had to teach a lesson on The Crucible by Arthur Miller for my Secondary English Methods class, so I decided to rockstar two different versions within a day. I watched this one and the 1957 Jean Paul Sartre version. Wow, it's a heck of a back-to-back. You have to understand, I love Arthur Miller. While The Crucible is not my favorite of his plays, it certainly is a solid play. This adaptation isn't, by any means, the best, but it is very good. I mean, everything in this story is covered. Arthur Miller wrote the screenplay. I mean, how much more of a stamp of approval do you need? It really is almost a verbatim translation of Miller's original text and I appreciate that.
But there is that certain kind of literary adaptation that took place during the 90's. I mean, you look at the way this movie is filmed and then you look at a film like Beloved. It seemed like there was just a certain style of filmmaking that reigned. It looked gritty, but the film really is quite tame compared to what we've seen in other decades. There is very little artistic style outside of sweaty faces and overused pullaways.
But the story is so good. SO GOOD! Heck, I don't even live in the McCarthy era and I'm still moved by this tale. And even as much as I gripe about the technical direction, the visuals are still competant. The film does its job.
Now, I feel I have to address the acting. People whine about Winona Ryder. I personally don't have any opinion on the woman myself. Outside of the fact that it is criminal that she steals for fun. But she really isn't the best choice for Abbey in this version. I don't know. She's just so recognizable and she really doesn't pull out anything that really screams genius in this movie. Daniel Day is really where you should be looking. I mean, I'd much rather watch him in There Will Be Blood, but he's got this natural performance style that is really unmatched by any other actor in Hollywood. I hear that he never breaks character during a shoot. I believe it.
End of the day, this is a solid movie. I wouldn't write home about it, but it did its job. I appreciate mostly the screenplay, but everything else can be described as adequate. -
This movie is really trippy. lt's crazy to watch how easily manipulated these people are when religion is called into question.
-
this is one of the most awesome adaptaions of this story ...okie Winona is a little old for the role...but i liked it a lot...and i could watch this over and over again...great drama...great acting from Joan Allen and Daniel D Lewis!!
-
Excellent film. I'll bet land claims WERE a major reason for the witch hunts in the first place. That and it was an excuse to get rid of people who bothered you. Puritans, eh...
-
Not the best film ever, but the acting is amazing. A few things could have been improved on in order to do justices to Arthur Miller's original play but still worth a watch.
-
I didn't like Winona in this movie, but overall I liked it. Also goes to show how vindictive some women can get when they don't get their way.
-
I need to watch this film because I forgot how brilliant it is. Excellent acting work done by Day-Lewis and Ryder.
-
Great movie to see over Thanksgiving!!! I was in this Play! Winona Ryder rocks.. I got naked and danced around the woods in this play! About girls who practice witchcraft in Salem Mass..
-

-
I Got To Read Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" For My Literature Class And I Was Really Entertained Until I Saw The Movie Which Made Me Not Like It So Much, The Acting Was Terrible And I Couldn't Believe How Naive The People Were Back Then . From My Point Of View This Movie Makes The Book Look Bad.
