It is an ok movie.. The big secret I saw it coming miles away.. and I recognized the actor from Stargate who plays the sun god RA. I thought that the first part of the movie (hostage) was more interesting than the second part of the movie.
In Ireland, a group of terrorists working for the IRA, (An Irish rebel force), capture an Englishman as a hostage, but a twisted gay bar experience that would change one of them forever. The infamous explosure scene with the "female" in this is so infamous that it has been parodied countless times since. (Spoilers: Jay Davidson plays a convincing drag queen who falls for the terorist that unknowingly somehow infiltrates the gay bar).
The successful shift between political thriller and romance allows this film to explore the effects of race, gender and politics on human relationships in a unique way. A thought-provoking film with fine performances.
Once again, I already knew about the twist before I have seen the film since I accidentally read about the twist somewhere online. Anyway, I didn't expect such a phenomenal movie from the man who has directed Breakfast on Pluto. The story is very interesting, and Fergus and Dil are very sympathetic and likeable. The acting performances are pretty much convincing too.
A story of surprises. The fist part of the film is a falsehood, and some others are the ones that make this film famous. But surprises aren't the things that make this film great. The vision of a good man. That's what I think about when the Crying Game comes to my mind.
Cuando la vi me sorprendío. No pensé que una historia de terroristas fuera tan tierna y emocional. Yo era muy joven y ahora que la vuelvo a ver me sigue llegando como en aquél entonces.
one of the best movies of all time....and one of the most shocking twists ever....i dont think anyone saw it coming...my jaw hit the floor so hard when they show u the twist...definately one to see and OWN!!!!
Im not going to say much about this film because there are many interesting things to mention that i will ruin the film. All i have to say is that the performances are excellent and the screenwriting is very clever. And as in many Neil Jordan's films, it reflects the conflicts of the Irish and the British, and much much more!
The film will manipulate you from beginning to end, so do not miss any details!
if this movie had a point, aside from the shaky theme of the "nature" of people, please, somebody fill me in. decently acted, but as far as storyline and character development are concerned, it fell miles short. a mildly entertaining semi-thriller film for a one-time viewing, maybe two if you believe in second chances.
SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS! IF YOU HAVEN''T SEEN THIS FILM YET DO NOT READ THE FOLLOWING:
In all honesty, I have to say I was extremely disappointed in 'The Crying Game'. People were telling it was such an amazing and surprising film, but I have to tell you I kind of knew she was a 'he'. I mean, who couldn't, - ADAM'S APPLE! I wasn't too surprised with that, but I was shocked when they revealed his/her/it's penis (WOW!), creepy stuff. But besides that 'The Crying Game' is overall a very good film. Neil Jordan does his finest direction to date with 'The Crying Game', and his screenplay is also powerful, but drags a lot especially during the middle. I think the best quality about this motion picture is the acting. Every actor is at the top of their game. Stephen Rea gives a carefully-crafted powerhouse performance (that is in my opinion his best) as Fergus, a member of a notorious anti-IRA activist group who with his co-workers including the crazy, violent vixen Jude (Miranda Richardson - in a swift and brilliant performance that should have earned her an Oscar nomination), kidnap an IRA Soldier, Jody (Forest Whitaker - in one of his best performances) to hold him for ransom. Fergus is in charge of guarding Jody and the two of them start a friendship. After all goes to sh*t, and half of Fergus' team and Jody dies, Fergus keeps a promise to Jody that he will seek out his girlfriend, Dil (Jaye Davidson - another incredible Oscar-nominated performance, the best he's given). Fergus falls in love with Dil, but doesn't know she's a he. When he finds out he decides to stay with her because he fell in love with her/him/it. But Fergus' violent past comes back to haunt him. 'The Crying Game' is a very good film, but it relied to much on it's twist, that in my opinion wasn't too much of a shocker. Still, even with that aside the quality of 'The Crying Game' is still up there. I would say if you see this one afternoon or night on HBO or one of the other movie channels I recommend you watch it if nothing else is on. 'The Crying Game' is a film about the acting which is no doubt exceptional. It's very gritty, and definitely not for the more weak-hearted (those who would hate to see two men kiss should avoid this), but I have to give credit where it is due and say 'The Crying Game' is not a great or excellent film like many will have you to believe, but again, it's a very good film with superior aspects all around, but the big "twist" isn't too convincing. Grade: B
You couldn't help but be drawn to Jaye Davidson. He plays it so slinky. Great movie. Also is it just me or does Jaye look eerily like Cathy Tyson who was in another Neil Jordan directed flick 'Mona Lisa'.
not a bad lil movie. the twist wasn't what i expected it to be. i've been seeing so many films recently with that type of thing going on in it. it's like i'm being brainwashed! i will not buy a dress! jaye davidson played a convincing lass except for the huge wide nose which did kind of give it away. miranada richardson a.k.a. queenie off of the blackadder 2 series was really fierce and nasty! forest whitaker had an interesting part. stephen rea who i believe was also in michael collins (same director also) seems to have the knack of playing an I.R.A. type character down to a T. it started off real slow but after about 45 minutes it really got going and it did have a good ending. liked the story about the scorpian and the frog. well directed by neil jordan
A popular and critically acclaimed Irish film written and directed by Neil Jordan. The film explores themes of race, gender, nationality, and sexuality against the backdrop of the Irish Troubles.
The film was notable for its dramatic plot twist, when the male protagonist discovers that his love interest is a transwoman. The film is also notable for its sympathetic portrayal of characters from often-reviled subcultures, presented here as complex and likable human beings...a thriller, but also as an unconventional romance and a must see...!
Nevermind the twist; while itself has not lost its shock factor, it's almost impossible to walk into the film untainted. That aside, it's a strong story, with amazing acting and rather fabulous in a crude way. Absolutely brilliant.
Maybe time has made this film stale because I honestly don't see what's so great about it. It tackles an interesting subject, no doubt, but I found the acting and the plot at times convoluted and melodramatic. Maybe this was really cutting edge stuff back in '92, but I am not impressed, and a little bit bored.
