This movie is not my fav but is still a good movie because of the puppet work and the story line and the one main theme which is friendship is strong in this film. Also fizgig is the best!!!!!
for effects,design,style,puppetry,art and story..this film is 100% henson genius,fantastic looking and beautifully told in a muppet cross dark live action tale of wizards n magic in another world.
its quite dark for kids and will scare,but its a twisted fairytale thats just stunning in concept and production.the creatures and detail is perfect,everything works well in their own way and is crafted by skilled craftsmen/women.the only problem is its alittle dull and maybe too dark for its targeted audience.
with labyrinth this is one of hensons brilliant 'other' muppet movies.
I can recognize the amount of work that went into making this movie, and some of it does show: the film has great creature designs, a few good sets, and a great score by Trevor Jones. But I find the story completely dull, the characters bland, and the morals unappealing (let's just blend good and evil and we'll get some luminescent superbeing; as if.)
I finally got around to seeing this classic film. The story was good but I felt like Jim Henson was trying to say "hey look what I can do!"
I found this movie to be one of the definitive tales of good versuses evil, and how that balance must remain. I enjoyed how when one of the evil characters die, their direct opposite on the side of good must die as well, and vice versa.
Since this is a kids movie and by all rights and definitions the characters are Muppets (although Muppets that give you nightmares), it has a very strong message of how oppression and genoicide are wrong. There are a lot of echoes from the Exodus, and to past events in human history.
If this film has a flaw it is that it is too reliant on puppetry. The heroic duo of the Gelflings could hav easily been portrayed by human actors under heavy makeup to give a more realistic effect. Since they did not go that route our heroes look emotionless and unlively and that just took the movie down a notch.
Considering the era the movie was made in it has a lot going for it, and the flaws were completly avoidable. I do recommend one see this movie at some point, the story is original and entertaining.
I saw this movie at the movie theater, a long long long time ago. My mommy take me and that's why this movie brings me good memories from my child hood. Hope my children saw it some day.
It's a great movie that can be a little slow at times. I also I like the humor and the special effects for the time. I have this movie and I still watch it regularly. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of fantasy.
I started in on it, but I just couldn't make it past the puppets. Puppets work for maybe one character in a movie (Yoda), or in a comedy (the Muppets), but not in a grand scale serious fantasy tale. Maybe I'll give it another shot some day.
This movie was cute. I think its a good kids movie. If anyone was to ask me to recommend them a movie I would say this one. Well only if u like the puppets, i would tell u to watch this one.
Great story shown through an original method. The whole movies colors and sets are amazing. Easily a movie everyone should see who considers themselves a film fan.
The animatronics and puppetry in this film were indeed quite stunning. And the '80s cheese was wonderful. But, to be honest, the film itself got a little annoying after a while. I don't think I'll feel the need to ever watch this again.
