I'm a big fan of sci-fi films, but this remake is pretty bad. The plot is sloppy, the acting is bad, and it really just didn't make much sense. The whole film seemed absolutely pointless. I love end of the world scenarios, but this was just crap. However, the graphics were mi...( read more)nd-blowing. It's a visually appealing film, but there's really not much substance. We've come to expect that from Keanu Reeves films though. Shame it had some wasted talent with Jennifer Connelly and Kathy Bates, who weren't actually half bad for what crap they were given.

Don't know about the earth standing still but it felt like time did watching this. For gods sake Keanu, get some acting lessons!

A potentially great story about alien contact was really let down by the plot more than anything. I have seen the original and while that would be regarded as well ahead of it's time made in 1951 this will shortly be forgotten. This has the big budget modern effects otherwise the...( read more) main difference of this and the original is the reason for the alien contact. The original made after WW2 was all about living in peace or risk destruction for our violent actions. This is all about the environment if we can't change our ways we risk killing the earth and ourselves. Oh and John Cleese is always worthy of more than a few minutes cameo?!
Great start but a missed opportunity. If you want a good action, drama or disaster film on a similar them watch Independence day, War of the Worlds, or The day after tomorrow instead.

The original film was pretty good but was ready for a remake. This doesn?t do it justice. I suppose Keanu Reeves was well cast considering he is playing an emotionless alien but the rest of the cast (Apart from Cleeses?s brief cameo) are rubbish. Jaden Smith in particular was inc...( read more)redibly irritating. Don?t get me started on the Gort scene at the end!

"I need to know what's happening?
    - This planet is dying. The human race is killing it."

I call myself a movie fan but there's one thing (many, in fact) that I'm embarrassed about.. I haven't seen the 50's classic of 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'. Before writing this review, I...( read more) had to check one thing. Although I haven't seen it, I remember that the original was about how the alien tried to guide the human race to the path of peace. This remake has an interesting version to bring out, the story has been changed from human warlike disposition to how we are destroying our planet by pollution. So a small update that is..

That's really the only interesting aspect of the movie. From what could've been a good "philosophical point of view of the modern days, turns out to be nothing but another disaster movie. For this movie to be a noteworthy sci-fi film, it fails to bring anything new to the genre, is way too boring and, like said earlier, doesn't bring out the polluting aspect up front like it should have been. It's mentioned briefly but then the film just concentrates on Klaatu running in / from various places...

Scott Derrickson directed earlier 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose'. I liked it and when I found out that he had made this film, I was a bit disappointed. Good potential wasted, for now that is. His next film, 'Paradise Lost' sounds interesting though...

The cast really doesn't know what they're doing. Keanu is being Keanu, that's no surprise, but Kathy Bates and Jennifer Connelly are seriously wrongly cast. I don't even wanna mention comedy legend John Cleese...

'The Day the Earth Stood Still' is a well-meaning film but it just gets lost on its way. Remakes are always dangerous things to do. So few have toped its predecessors ('The Thing', 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' from '78). This film had potential by updating its idea of the story, but simply failed...

Oh my god.....what a waste of a brilliant story....this movie has been reduced to a crappy movie with just 2 good scenes (one where GORT turns into dust and escapes from the military base, the other where GORT particles eat the stadium)

Complete nincompoopness!! This movie has ...( read more)been reduced to a B grade movie with crappy preacher dialogs that look like they've been written by 6 yr olds!!

    Stay away from this one!!

Uh, yeah, so morbid curiosity and cable got the better of me...

It's not completely awful, but it's rather pointless in the end, and while Jennifer Connelly is easy on the eyes, you can find her in better stuff than this nonsense.

    Rental at best.
