I'm a big fan of sci-fi films, but this remake is pretty bad. The plot is sloppy, the acting is bad, and it really just didn't make much sense. The whole film seemed absolutely pointless. I love end of the world scenarios, but this was just crap. However, the graphics were mi...( read more)nd-blowing. It's a visually appealing film, but there's really not much substance. We've come to expect that from Keanu Reeves films though. Shame it had some wasted talent with Jennifer Connelly and Kathy Bates, who weren't actually half bad for what crap they were given.

Don't know about the earth standing still but it felt like time did watching this. For gods sake Keanu, get some acting lessons!
  • October 3, 2009
A potentially great story about alien contact was really let down by the plot more than anything. I have seen the original and while that would be regarded as well ahead of it's time made in 1951 this will shortly be forgotten. This has the big budget modern effects otherwise the...( read more) main difference of this and the original is the reason for the alien contact. The original made after WW2 was all about living in peace or risk destruction for our violent actions. This is all about the environment if we can't change our ways we risk killing the earth and ourselves. Oh and John Cleese is always worthy of more than a few minutes cameo?!
Great start but a missed opportunity. If you want a good action, drama or disaster film on a similar them watch Independence day, War of the Worlds, or The day after tomorrow instead.

The original film was pretty good but was ready for a remake. This doesn?t do it justice. I suppose Keanu Reeves was well cast considering he is playing an emotionless alien but the rest of the cast (Apart from Cleeses?s brief cameo) are rubbish. Jaden Smith in particular was inc...( read more)redibly irritating. Don?t get me started on the Gort scene at the end!

"I need to know what's happening?
    - This planet is dying. The human race is killing it."

I call myself a movie fan but there's one thing (many, in fact) that I'm embarrassed about.. I haven't seen the 50's classic of 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'. Before writing this review, I...( read more) had to check one thing. Although I haven't seen it, I remember that the original was about how the alien tried to guide the human race to the path of peace. This remake has an interesting version to bring out, the story has been changed from human warlike disposition to how we are destroying our planet by pollution. So a small update that is..

That's really the only interesting aspect of the movie. From what could've been a good "philosophical point of view of the modern days, turns out to be nothing but another disaster movie. For this movie to be a noteworthy sci-fi film, it fails to bring anything new to the genre, is way too boring and, like said earlier, doesn't bring out the polluting aspect up front like it should have been. It's mentioned briefly but then the film just concentrates on Klaatu running in / from various places...

Scott Derrickson directed earlier 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose'. I liked it and when I found out that he had made this film, I was a bit disappointed. Good potential wasted, for now that is. His next film, 'Paradise Lost' sounds interesting though...

The cast really doesn't know what they're doing. Keanu is being Keanu, that's no surprise, but Kathy Bates and Jennifer Connelly are seriously wrongly cast. I don't even wanna mention comedy legend John Cleese...

'The Day the Earth Stood Still' is a well-meaning film but it just gets lost on its way. Remakes are always dangerous things to do. So few have toped its predecessors ('The Thing', 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' from '78). This film had potential by updating its idea of the story, but simply failed...

"Your problem is not technology. The problem is you. You lack the will to change.
    - Then help us change."

Very good movie. I like it much better than the original which is rare.

    Dumb Ass Plot......Boring!,modernized!,obviously rehashed shit!!!
  • November 9, 2009
Muy buena. Me gusto tanto como la original de 1951.
  • November 9, 2009
the plot was sloppy and it forgot the climax! Jaden Smith was annoying as hell. The best thing was getting to stare at Jennifer Connelly for sure.

Armond White, The New York Press

This film is a perfect illustration of how to screw-up a remake despite having a perfect example in front of you. full review

David Edelstein, New York Magazine

The remake of that fine old fifties alien-invasion picture The Day the Earth Stood Still comes to a standstill about an hour before the Earth does in the wilds of New Jersey. full review

Kurt Loder, MTV

A boldly mediocre remake of the 1951 sci-fi saucer-man movie. full review

Mike McGranaghan, The Aisle Seat

I'll give it credit for being at least moderately entertaining, with a handful of effective moments of adventure and suspense. At the same time, it's really quite a shame that the film wimped out on d... full review

Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

Where the original film was unpretentious, this version, with Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, is insufferably full of itself, an X-Files episode pumped up to pseudo-cosmic proportions. full review

Claudia Puig, USA Today

A good portion of this sci-fi disaster movie is unintentionally comical. And the parts that aren't funny are just plain dull. full review

Wade Major, Boxoffice Magazine

Unfortunately, it's the demise of even passable screen storytelling, rather than the earth itself, to which audiences will be treated in this dreadful remake. full review

Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

Neither offensively bad nor particularly good, The Day the Earth Stood Still may be best remembered for the clumsiness of its intrusive product placement. full review

December 12, 2008
Ty Burr, Boston Globe

The new Day the Earth Stood Still lacks the courage of its own eco-pessimism, and the final scenes play like a rushed, embarrassed concession to our need for happy endings, no matter how far-fetched. full review

Michael Sragow, The Baltimore Sun

What shatters your hope for a new classic is the movie's descent into semicoherent spectacle. full review

Interesting movie, although this isn't my favourite subject. Good acting, but the end was a bit strange, like the humanity changed in the one second Helen and her stepson Jacob were hugging.

It's kinda cool to see those CG scenes and that robot thing but exactly I expected to see more action and fights in this kinda movie but it served more peace

And I agree about that kid, so fuckin much, I love Will Smith but goddamnit his son drove me nuts in this movie and if I were Keenu I would vanish him first....I think that's another way to make the earth better.

it was pretty good. If they were going for someone like keanu to play Klaatu then they picked the perfect person. I haven't seen the first oneso I don't know if Klaatu's suppose to be totaly emotionless. Jennifer Connely and Jaden Smith were great! I really liked it. A great message.
