One of my favorite films by Martin Scorsese is "After Hours". It's an absurd film, and one that leaves the viewer helpless to the point where all you can do is laugh. Many people compare it's story to Franz Kafka's "The Trial", as it's about a man in a world that seems completely...( read more) against him. However, when you compare "After Hours" to "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu", you have an entirely sane light-hearted comedic fare. "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu" sure takes Kafka-esque to a whole new level, and it's one of the most disturbing movies i've ever seen.

"The Death of Mr. Lazarescu" follows man a dying man throughout the night. As the story begins, he seems fairly normal - but by the end of the movie he cannot put together a sentence. Accompanying him is Mioara, a nurse. She's fairly irritated by him, however we definitely feel that she cares about him. Throughout the night, they're met with nothing but insults, false accusations, and completely rude doctors. For instance, the first hospital Mr. Lazarescu visits, he is lectured about alcohol and is completely ignored when he mentions he had an ulcer surgery in the past. Each hospital's first idea is to send him elsewhere - it becomes a struggle to get someone who will listen for more than a minute. As the story progresses and Lazarescu becomes more and more incomprehensible, it becomes a film about Mioara and her struggle to find something, well "human".

Many people call this an eye-opening look at the Romanian health care system - but I think that's a bunch of crap. It's simply a film about dehumanizing in the time of death. There's nothing Romanian about that. It's universal. In fact, I didn't think health care was portrayed all that awful!

I absolutely loved this movie. That being said, this is never a movie i'd recommend to anyone I know. It's so dark and foul - there are perhaps 3 or 4 characters in the film that show any semblance of heart. This was marketed as a "dark comedy", but there's absolutely nothing to laugh about. It's a film that leaves you helpless, knowing that Mr. Lazarescu is going to die and no one is going to do anything about it. And frankly, besides Mioara, there isn't a single person who could possibly care.

The beauty of the film is that it never makes any attempt to make "drama". There's absolutely no score, and the camera movements are as minimalist as they were in "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days". It's one of the most heart wrenching films i've ever seen and you never had some of the typical things you'd expect from a drama. No one cried to showed their pain, there was no slow motion - it was simply presented to us. Steady, handheld shots take us through the whole film.

The performances all around are delightful. Ion Fiscuteanu, who plays Mr. Lazarescu, goes through some absolutely drastic changes throughout the course of the film and it never seems forced. He's dwindling down to what he becomes by the end of the film - there's never any big "jumps" that startle us in this development. Luminita Gheorghiu, Mioara, is an unforgettable heroin that we grow to love. It's definitely an on screen pairing that i'll never forget.

A lot of people are bound to hate this movie. I'd consider myself very patient with film and it takes a whole lot to bore me - but i'd admit that at a few times throughout this I was getting restless. While the film is never "boring", it's simply hard to be involved in such a grim world for two and a half hours. It's absolutely emotionally draining - by the time the credits come around you're a shell of yourself.

If you do check this out, don't dismiss it before you are able to establish it's pace. It's extremely slow, but if you stick around with it it's incredibly rewarding. I loved this.

One of the most honest and socially relevant films of the decade, perhaps ever made. Strange and unexplainably funny look a man's death under inhumane and indignifying conditions and a harsh, important critique of the modern medical system that some countries unfortunely have. Se...( read more)emingly artless, documentary-style mise en scène, with the characters followed by a shoulder-mounted camera. Cristi Puiu is the only filmmaker I know who has such a compassion for human behaviour and a tight grip on realist, documentary-style filmmaking at the same time. The kind of film that transcends borders and can talk to people worldwide.

I always wanted to see this film, which is said to have kicked off the ?Romanian New Wave? but I?ve got to say, this was a real challenge to get through. This is one of those movie?s whose overall goal was to actively unpleasant for 153 minutes, and I basically watched it in thr...( read more)ee chunks. The movie is deliberately shot in the most amateur looking vérité style imaginable with really realistically dark lighting, and it sort of gave me a headache. But? about an hour and a half in the whole thing finally started to make sense to me. The film?s message started to click and its style started to finally make sense to me. This is a good movie, but it?s hard for me to love something that?s an active challenge to watch. The fact that the film?s subtitles were in a bizarre font of blue surrounded by white outlines didn?t help, it was hard to read, distracting and added to the headache inducing nature of it all.

The subtitles are nearly impossible to read. Unless you're really interested in the pitfalls and failures of the health system of whatever country this film is from, you want to skip this film I found it boering and pointless.

I don't know if this is a great film, true, real and thought-provoking, or if it's a horrible film, dragging on forever on without ever connecting with the viewer. It was very different, and I will probably remeber it for a long time, but ultimately it falls on the fact that it h...( read more)ad no entertainmentvalue. I think I smiled once during the entire film. Sorry, but I need to be bought of at least a little, especially for a film that clocks in on over two and a half hours.

The cover is great (to a cat lover like me), the last "Romanian new wave" movies I saw were pretty good and this one got many awards.
Hum... so, what went wrong? Bad mood, maybe?
I really tried to watch it, but after half hour, I found myself fast-fowarding it to the end. It´s...( read more) not even fair to rate it.

Like many romanian movies made after 2000, "Moartea domnului Lazarescu" has some common characteristics: dark and bleak atmoshpere, story inspired by reality, told without using any "artifices", the music almost lacks, excepting the first few minutes at the begining and at the e...( read more)nd, making dissonant note with the rest, also the performances are not over the top like in so many Hollywood dramas, they are just.... perfect. Also, every scene is accompanied by a dark humour that comes mostly from the dialog and the almost surreal situations.
Is been said that this movie launched the romanian new wave, achiving significant international distribution.
The movie itself does not offer any surprises because we already know the outcome of the story, but for about 150 minutes the movie successfully succeds to engage the viewer.
There's no heroes to save the day, theres no dr. House on call, "Moartea domnului Lazarescu" just brings the harsh reality on the screen without trying to hide any aspect of it.
Domnul Lazarescu is ill, has problems with his stomac, liver, feet, and also seem to have a hematoma on his brain that puts his life in danger if not immediately operated. He lives a lonely and miserable life, with his 3 cats.
The only person that seem to give a dam is an ambulance medical assistant that does her best to save the old mans life.
"Moarte domnului Lazarescu" can bee seen as a drama, but is really a critique against the health care system in "the land of choise"...
Ironically I was reading an articol in the news papers about health care state in Romania, the report made by Health Consumer Powerhouse stated the Romania finds at the end of the list, only Bulgaria is worse in this departmant then us, so talking about life imitating art..
  • February 14, 2009
I honestly don't know what to rate this. It's acclaimed to be a comedy but I didn't find it funny, rather painstakingly frustrating and sad. I can see how it is a satire on Romanian health care but still...maybe I'm too sensitive to judge this appropriately.
  • July 31, 2008
I really like black comedies. Even though this one is slightly long, I enjoyed it very much. It's a good critic of the Romanian health system but you could also apply it to so many other countries (like mine, Canada, for instance). That's probably why I got so involved while watc...( read more)hing it. The actors are all great, and I liked the long shots; it felt a bit like a documentary.

By recording this all too commonplace and dehumanizing process, Puiu's film shows the sick old man and the strangers who deal with him to be all too human -- extraordinarily so. full review
