The Barbarian Invasions (Les Invasions barbar... (100%)

Plot: You've never seen a sex comedy quite like The Decline of the American Empire. That's because there's no sex in this comedy--just a lot of entertaining talk about it (and a few discreet flashbac...( read more read more... )ks). The speakers are eight Montreal academics. For most of the film, the men--Rémy (Rémy Girard), Claude (Yves Jacques), Pierre (Pierre Curzi), and Alain (Daniel Brière)--fix dinner while talking about sex. The women--Dominique (Dominique Michel), Louise (Dorothée Berryman), Diane (Louise Portal), and Danielle (Geneviève Rioux)--work out while talking about sex. That evening, they all gather for dinner... and talk about sex. The Decline of the American Empire made the reputation of writer-director Denys Arcand, but his greatest success would arrive 17 years later with The Barbarian Invasions. In that 2003 Oscar-winner, Arcand revisits the lovably loquacious characters from the first film, all of whom are older, wiser--and just as obsessed with sex. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

A quiry sex comedy. There's no sex, per se, just some dirty talk and some suggestive off-screen goings-on. But if you learn to like the characters, you'll probably enjoy this blunt battle of the sexes. But despite rave reviews, it's hardly the second coming (pardon the pun).

Quelques bonnes réflexions sur l'Empire américain... mais le reste n'étant que sexe et discussions sur le sexe... je n'ai pas trop aimé, non. Les Invasions Barbare était nettement meilleur, et méritait ses prix !

I had to study this at University. The only thing I remember is someone pissing blood and a bus full of old people going on journey as a metaphor for dying. Utter shite!

Most certainly the best French-Canadian director, fascinating work on the modern history of North America and the existential distress that some of us feel toward it.

Des intellectuels qui parlent de sexe, c'est non seulement savoureux, c'est en plus tres drole et tres emouvant.

According to Darwin's theory of evolution, men are descended from apes... Sadly, French Canadians never made it and stopped evolving halfway through!!!
Although this movie is one of the most vile pieces of poop ever to grace the silver screen, it nevertheless has the merit of proving the aforementioned statement.
