An excellent Vietnam war film. My whole respect for this one. One of the most brutally shocking and realistic portrayals of the Vietnam War and its aftermath, including psychological and character consequences. Genius.

A powerful film which tackles the effects that the Vietnam War had on its American participants, looking at before, during and after going to war. Admittedly some parts, such as the wedding, did go on for longer than I felt needed, yet you could argue this was a big factor in est...( read more)ablishing a clear view of the six friends and was needed.
Christopher Walken's performance was especially memorable with the pinnacle of it being when he first walks into the Vietnamese betting on Russian roulette, and grabs the gun off the participant and pulls the trigger to his head. This shows so much about how his character has been affected from what had previously happened to him during his time on the front line.
De Niro also gives a strong performance, showing his true friendship when he returns to 'nam for Walken.
In conclusion I throughly enjoyed this film which had many strong themes and issues. At a running time of just over 3 hours this can feel like quite an age for some viewers, however 80% of the scenes are extremely brilliant. Well worth four stars and perhaps after a second time of watching with more attention if could have the potential to be four and a half.

snoozefest until the russian roulette scene, then more snoozing until walken (spoiler alert!) blows his head off.
  • September 10, 2009
I'm sorry but this just didn't do it for me. The party scene at the begining just lasts forever and you lose all interest. And then when they just jumps right into the action (wich could be a good effect if it's done right) I had lost all faith in the movie and they had lost me f...( read more)orever...It had some good moments but it was too slow and didn't got my attention

I found it pretty boring, but the Russian roulette scene was pretty awesome. The first 40 minutes was just a wedding and besides the fact that there were Frankie Valli songs, it was just annoying. Then it continued to drag on. But it's worth seeing just for the Russian roulette s...( read more)cene.

The Deer Hunter is one of the most heartbreaking films I have ever seen. Relationships are changed forever when war arrives. The acting in this film is absolutely stunning. Christopher Walken is impeccable in his performance and Meryl Streep is (as always) spectacular. A tear jerker and thought provoker.
  • June 15, 2009
Long, random and mostly useless shots fill the first hour of THE DEER HUNTER. What comes next is so different, it's like you're not even watching the same movie.

Raw, chilling, realistic war sequences. Great performances by Christopher Walken, John Savage and Meryl Streep; and...( read more) an excellent one by Robert De Niro make for a heartbreaking, thought-provoking classic.

THE DEER HUNTER would've benefited from a shorter running time and a broader view of the Vietnam War, not just the American perspective.

i thought this would be awesome like robert de niro, ass kicking in nam and going crazy or something. but no, it was robert de niro, pennsylvania bum. boring as fuck waste of three hours.
  • June 4, 2009
My first thought about this story, was that it was going to be really draggy and straining to follow. Because in my experience, that's normally the case when a movie is as long and old as this one. Luckily, however, I couldn't have been more wrong in my presumptions. Not a single...( read more) scene had me bored, and it held my attention through and through. The reasons for that are many, but the true key to what makes this movie a compelling watch, is the superbly written character development, combined with a stellar cast. The way the characters are transformed through the horrors and hardships they experience, feels as genuine as it is scary. Not only thanks to the fantastic acting, but because you know deep inside that these sort of things have really happened, all around the world. Now, I wouldn't go as far as to call this as masterpiece, like so many others do. But I can definitely understand why it's received such high acclaim, and is regarded as one of the great classics. For it is a good and memorable piece of film-making, that leaves you with a lot to ponder, as well as a very important message. One that is as relevant today as it was back when this was made.
  • June 4, 2009
astounding performances, and depicted as a proper story, I loved it.
  • May 31, 2009
i love him so much his walk, his talk, his mouth, his eyes all of him yum,yum
  • May 28, 2009
The film gives a view into how war affects people. It takes an hour to get into the war, but gives you plenty of background about the characters and how they change after the war. De Niro, Walken and Streep are fantastic.
  • May 26, 2009
Great movie and its not even about real deer hunting!
  • May 25, 2009
I guess it's a great movie. I just found it unutterably depressing.
