a powerful film. incredibly unique in the way that the stages of the film unfold. from the wedding, to the hunting, to the war, to the welcome home, and finally to the recovery of a lost friend. a bit overlong at times, but mostly phenomenal with great performances that help t... ...( read more )

Melodramatic, corny and dated. Just some scenes stand out, and Walken's performance.

"The Deer Hunter" is split up into three clearly defined sections, each running about an hour in length. The first is a sort of calm before the storm - we're guests at the wedding of Steven (John Savage) and his bride. Not only is it a celebration of the union of marriage, it's a... ...( read more )

he Deer Hunter is a masterpiece of life among a community before and after three friends get drafted to fight in the Vietnam War. The tragic events that take place in the jungles and the adjustment back into the drinking and hunting life of steel workers in Pittsburgh shook my li... ...( read more )

One of the best - if not the best - war movies of all time.

I loved the fact that most of the film plays out in America, instead of endless scenes of violence in Vietnam. We start with a wedding, and end with a funeral. By the end, we feel like we know the characters inti... ...( read more )

After a slow start ?Deerhunter? evolves into an impressive piece of cinema history, with the ability to have as strong an impact today as it did at the time of it?s release.

With an impressive cast and strong performances by De Niro and Walken, this film totally pulls you in a... ...( read more )

''You have to think about one shot. One shot is what it's all about. A deer's gotta be taken with one shot. I try to tell people that but they don't listen.''

An in-depth examination of the way that the Vietnam war affects the lives of people in a small indus... ...( read more )

For much of the beginning of the film, I wanted to chew my own limbs off, and if I hadn't heard so much good about this film, I probably would've just stopped watching. But then, at the first hunting scene it starts to really kick off. That's really where the movie should've star... ...( read more )

You can't deny the power of this film at the end. Coming out in 1978 (only several years after the Vietnam War) probably made it that more powerful and significant at the time. However, this movie was 3 hours of a lot of boredom and dull moments. The acting was great. I escpe... ...( read more )

The Deer Hunter is a very realistic portrayal of the Vietnam war and what it brought to its veterans. Michael Cimino's best film, in my opinion. Deserving the Oscars it got. Christopher Walken is amazing in this film, his scenes were portrayed to cause terror to the audien... ...( read more )

I came 12,000 miles back here to get you...What's the matter with you? Don't you recognize me?...Nicky, I love you, you're my friend. What are you doing?

The acting in this film is absolutely stunning. Christopher Walken is impeccable in his performance and Meryl Streep is (as always) spectacular. A tear jerker and thought provoker.

Long, random and mostly useless shots fill the first hour of THE DEER HUNTER. What comes next is so different, it's like you're not even watching the same movie.

Raw, chilling, realistic war sequences. Great performances by Christopher Walken, John Savage and Meryl Streep; and... ...( read more )

i thought this would be awesome like robert de niro, ass kicking in nam and going crazy or something. but no, it was robert de niro, pennsylvania bum. boring as fuck waste of three hours.

My first thought about this story, was that it was going to be really draggy and straining to follow. Because in my experience, that's normally the case when a movie is as long and old as this one. Luckily, however, I couldn't have been more wrong in my presumptions. Not a single... ...( read more )

The film gives a view into how war affects people. It takes an hour to get into the war, but gives you plenty of background about the characters and how they change after the war. De Niro, Walken and Streep are fantastic.

An amazing movie about the affect of war, friendship, love, lust and let-downs. The actors are better than ever before, especially De Niro, Streep and Walken are memorable.

Was inspired to watch it followed by the great reviews I read. Unfortunately, I was hardly impressed even a bit by it. The lengthiness of the movie only added to my agony. Wish I wouldn't have stumbled upon this one!!!

Cristopher Walken best thing about this movie. maybe if 20 mins shorter would have been a great film.

This film is a war movie, but with barely any war in it. It mainly uses war as a mid-section to show the contrast of before and after the Vietnam war experience. Very happy small town people's lives change drastically. Try not to get depressed after this film, i dare you

Though unnecessary long for my taste, I have to admit this is a very good movie.
Christopher Walken is marvellous here! That mad face of his works perfectly in order to show not only the experience of living a war from the inside, but also the feelings left on a soldier's head a... ...( read more )
