My first thought about this story, was that it was going to be really draggy and straining to follow. Because in my experience, that's normally the case when a movie is as long and old as this one. Luckily, however, I couldn't have been more wrong in my presumptions. Not a single...( read more) scene had me bored, and it held my attention through and through. The reasons for that are many, but the true key to what makes this movie a compelling watch, is the superbly written character development, combined with a stellar cast. The way the characters are transformed through the horrors and hardships they experience, feels as genuine as it is scary. Not only thanks to the fantastic acting, but because you know deep inside that these sort of things have really happened, all around the world. Now, I wouldn't go as far as to call this as masterpiece, like so many others do. But I can definitely understand why it's received such high acclaim, and is regarded as one of the great classics. For it is a good and memorable piece of film-making, that leaves you with a lot to ponder, as well as a very important message. One that is as relevant today as it was back when this was made.

The film gives a view into how war affects people. It takes an hour to get into the war, but gives you plenty of background about the characters and how they change after the war. De Niro, Walken and Streep are fantastic.

Great movie and its not even about real deer hunting!
  • May 25, 2009
I guess it's a great movie. I just found it unutterably depressing.
  • May 19, 2009
An amazing movie about the affect of war, friendship, love, lust and let-downs. The actors are better than ever before, especially De Niro, Streep and Walken are memorable.
  • May 17, 2009
Was inspired to watch it followed by the great reviews I read. Unfortunately, I was hardly impressed even a bit by it. The lengthiness of the movie only added to my agony. Wish I wouldn't have stumbled upon this one!!!

  • April 17, 2009
This film is a war movie, but with barely any war in it. It mainly uses war as a mid-section to show the contrast of before and after the Vietnam war experience. Very happy small town people's lives change drastically. Try not to get depressed after this film, i dare you

Though unnecessary long for my taste, I have to admit this is a very good movie.
Christopher Walken is marvellous here! That mad face of his works perfectly in order to show not only the experience of living a war from the inside, but also the feelings left on a soldier's head a...( read more)nd body afterwards.
If you are patient enought to watch it, you'll probably not regret it.

One of the most widely aclaimed movies of all time. Three Pennsylvanian steel workers are sent out fight in the Vietnam war. Courage, Love, and Heroism greatly displayed in this great film.

I've already mentioned how annoying are to me war movies. In this case, The almost 3 hour drama The Deer Hunter was again a happy exception. Although it deals with the horror of the war and its secuels, the story dives much more into the life before and after the war instad of th...( read more)e fool glory and heroic dimensions of fighting against other human beings. The Characters are great as much as the way Cimino envolves us into their world just by putting us in the middle of the places they live in, the things they eat and drink, the songs they sing et al. OH, but yes, the last song I really don't find it appropiate (and I know which one is).

Thematically deep and expertly shot. The Deer Hunter examines the effects the Vietnam War has on the people from a small American town and how their lives are forever changed.
  • February 17, 2009
Great war movie. Wonderfully written and directed, with an all-star cast putting in career defining performances. The war images are realistic and at times disturbing. But they make for a memorable experience, that you'll want to see it again and again.
