Yes, this is a Cimino film. But is that a good thing? Not necessarily. Scenes are overlong and hit their most interesting points... long after interest itself has been lost. The director's presence is obvious in every scene and pollutes it to a degree, but not nearly as much as t...( read more)he editing that plagues this film throughout. The editing ranges from average to poor, and never improves over the former, yet doesn't hinder the emotional impact, of which there is an abundance, complimented by its dedication to the touchy subject matter. Its ultimately honorable intentions make up for some of the flaws, but sadly not all, and yet even with its amateurish presentation, it got away with five Oscars and gave Michael Cimino the rights to go and tackle a very personal project. This project was the disastrous "Heaven's Gate", which repeated Cimino's C-Grade direction, killed off United Artists, and destroyed Cimino's near-infinite credibility and drove him to madness amidst his one underlying belief that he held dear to him: that he had talent. He didn't.

What is it about this film which makes it so popular? It is at best an average film. It is at least an hour and 20mins too long. What was the 1st half of this film about? We discovered nothing about the characters we couldn't have discovered in 5mins!

By the time we get to '...( read more)nam we see them immediately caputred in some rural area with no idea how they got there!

Also why did one guy stay behind? I don't know! It wasn't even hinted at.
