This movie is GREAT Ive always had a thing for War Movies. At the end of the movie it just shows how much war fucks up peoples lifes
  • July 21, 2008
An excellent film, however an entirely different animal than Apocalypse Now. This film focuses more on the people going to war and the ones back home, and how everything changes in 'Nam. The acting is superb, De Niro and Walken are brilliant, however the only reason i can't give ...( read more)this a 10 is because of a few scenes that are just too slow, mainly that damn wedding scene, my god.

this movie touched me so deeply i named my oldest child after the part Christopher... played... Nikki
  • July 19, 2008
They really cold have made this a little shorter. It does have some of the most intense scenes ever though.
  • July 12, 2008
I thought it was so boring.
  • July 10, 2008
This movie really shows how war srews people up. Starts with a bunch of mates living normal lives, ends... well you can imagine. Only problem i have with this movie is the wedding part is way too long.
  • July 10, 2008
this is a really good movie!
  • July 9, 2008
christopher walken stuns me with this. how did he allow himself to be so monumentally mistypecast after this AMAZING performance? (de niro SO mails it in, by the way, IMHO).
  • July 9, 2008
I bought this movie for 5 bucks on VHS at Wal-mart in West Monroe.

    What a film.

This is the movie that gave Cimino the power to make Heaven's Gate and the ego to go along with it. This film is great (DeNiro, Walken, Streep, Cazale, and Savage are all amazing) and it looks great, too. And that brings me back to my point: are "great" directors made by great DP...( read more)'s and an awesome cast? You have to think that maybe Cimino is one of those guys. This is a hard movie to sit through and watch what happens to these characters, but it's great at the same time and captures the Vietnam War unlike any other war film. A must see.
  • June 30, 2008
the russian roulette scene blew my mind... oh, bad choice of words
  • June 27, 2008
3+ hours? Come on! I know there may be some marit to this film, but I couldn't wait for it to be over, and in my book that doesn't deserve a high rating.
  • June 25, 2008
I dunno.. just didn't do it for me
  • June 25, 2008
The Deer Hunter was probably the worst compiled setup of prioritizing in a film ever made. Why they spent 50 minutes preparing for an extremely tacky wedding and zoomed in on unnecessary symbolism and then spent barely 30 minutes in Vietnam which was (in my opinion) the most imp...( read more)ortant and well done part of the movie is just beyond me... I guess that's why I don't make movies... my take on this film would have been about 30 minutes long total and several characters would have been left out entirely... the acting was very good though, I will say that much.

It has been over 13 years since I have first laid eyes on this film ( a whopping old age of 10 I was!) and to this day and beyond no other movie breaks down my emotionless barrier unlike The Deer Hunter. For myself this film was the stepping stone to great cinema. I am a life lon...( read more)g diehard Deniro and Walken fan because of this film. It ranks on my TOP 10 Greatest Movies Ever and will never leave and maybe ascend a spot or two as I get older. The story of small town blue-collar iron/steel mill workers fascinates from the beginng credits of the early morning dusk settling down sleeping forests of green, to the tyrranical jungles of Vietnam, amd back again to the small town turned upside down by tragedy striking thousands of miles away. Hands down this movie deserved every Oscar appointed to it and Deniro was a fine canidate for BEST ACTOR. Walken hands down acted his heart out and as I write this I recieve chills and goosebumps at remeberances of scenes past. If there were a TEN STAR rating I would mark that a million fold. Every one: young, old, skinny, fat, handicapped, bald, blue, hermaphrodites, whatever you may be....much watch this film before crossing over to the unknown which this movie so proudly exhibits.

Jesus, where should i even begin. This movie runs on a bit, but it contains probably the best combination of acting and pure horror of vietnam i've ever seen.
  • June 7, 2008
The Deer Hunter is a very realistic portrayal of the Vietnam war and what it brought to its veterans. Michael Cimino's best film, in my opinion. Deserving the Oscars it got. Clearly one of the best scenes in cinema. The Deer Hunter had amazing performances all throughout, including Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, John Cazale, and Christopher Walken.

  • May 30, 2008
Took forever to get on with the story.
  • May 26, 2008
Robert DeNiro deserved his oscar for this performance. It's another classic.
  • May 16, 2008
This is a great movie and another one of my favorite De Niro performances. It's a story about friendship,a really good film that one 5 academy awards,a must see!
  • May 12, 2008
By far one of the best war films that I've ever seen. If I were to rank the 100 best films ever made, this would probably land somewhere around 50. It's that great. Every single actor is fantastic, but the standouts are Meryl Streep, Robert DeNiro, and Christopher Walken. Michael...( read more) Cimino does a terrific job directing this masterpiece with tremendous sets, and good ending, and tons of great war scenes. Although it's over 3 hours long, it really doesn't seem like that. Terrific film that everybody should see!

An amazing film, one of the greatest ever made.
  • April 28, 2008
There's many appropriate words for this: Strong, gripping, powerful and so on.
One of De Niro's best parts and Walken is great as always. I must say it was worth the Oscars it got.
  • April 26, 2008
The acting was awesome, but for me it was too slow and the main story line was not very good. The situation side was done very well, how peoples lives changed because of a war was very deep and dramatic.
  • April 26, 2008
feel good movie of the year 1978
  • April 23, 2008
Painful to watch but one of the best movies i've seen.
  • April 21, 2008
Definitely one of the best movies ever made
  • April 20, 2008
This movie was gut wrenching. I'm really glad this movie wasn't ruined for me. Going in without any spoilers made it so much more enriching. The russian roullete sequences are intense. And the violence is very realistic. This movie is great in it's portrayal of the war and ...( read more)small town life. The end is very tragic. Walken is great in this movie an DeNiro throws down another classic performance. A very badass yet sad movie.

    9.5 out of 10.

    One Shot.

With all the hype and awards surrounding this movie, I expected a lot more. It is a very slow moving film, split into three parts. 1. Before the war 2. Vietnam war 3. After the war.

It deals heavily with the psychological aspect of warfare. However, it is not done as well as "A...( read more)pocalypse Now". The transition between simple blue collar life into the battle fields of Nam and then back, are done quite well. The movie is just too damn long, and I found myself "watching the clock" and zoning out for a lot of this movie. It just doesn't hold your attention, and I can't figure out for the life of me what all the fuss is about.

I think I got the idea with one Russian Roulette sequence. Really, what new material are you covering with multiple Russian Roulette sequences?

Apparently, Russian Roulette is rarely ever found in Vietnam whic means that some writer thought that scene would be badass. That'...( read more)s the big problem I have with this movie. It's pretty good, but I don't see where the "greatness" comes from. The part I really liked was probably the part that bored audiences in this three hour (yes, another three hour film) movie: the beginning. I loved the small town steel town life. I'm Ukrainian and went to school right outside of Weirton, WV. I get both cultures to some extent. It was great to see the cockiness of these guys before they went off to war. But there's just those moments that kind of threw you as "well, that's a little obvious / forced." The "don't spill a drop" sequence. Yeah, c'mon. I've seen better ways to do that and that was just lame foreshadowing.

The Vietnam sequences weren't bad. I mean, if that was the only Russian Roulette sequence, I would have thought of it as really powerful. Walken really busted some acting chops in this one. Like everyone else, I don't take the man's work seriously. But he's pretty good in this one. Sure, he's still got that Walken delivery for some stuff, but he kind of reigns it in on this one. Then putting him across from DeNiro is just a fantastic choice. DeNiro really grounds this movie. I'm not used to seeing him in this kind of role. He's very human and very out-of-control in this movie. He's usually playing angry and in charge. While there's a little bit of that, he does approach this role very differently. His chemistry with Meryl Streep is also perfect. I never thought I'd find anyone who had great chemistry with Meryl Streep, but it really worked for these guys.

I have to comment. There's a bunch of REALLY cornball moments in this movie. Tihe wine stain, DeNiro scremaing okay, "It's American", etc., etc., etc. But one scene takes the cake and its the last scene in the movie. I realize that, at the time, it caused a stir. But singing "God Bless America" ironically isn't so much clever as it is ridiculous. I have no qualm with the statement that scene made. It's not the controvery, but the attempt to think you're being clever. It was silly.

This movie was good but VERY depressing.
  • April 16, 2008
Christopher Walken's portrayal of Nick Chevotarevich - especially towards the end of the film - is one of the finest acting performances I have ever seen, even going as far as overshadowing legendary Robert de Niro, the late John Cazale and the tremendous Meryl Streep. The sound ...( read more)is slightly muffled at times (perhaps on purpose?) and the wedding scene perhaps drags on a bit much, but all-in-all this is probably the best Vietnam War film around, even better than "Apocalypse Now".
  • April 13, 2008
long movie with slow pace, but magnificent actor work makes it interesting. the start felt too slow for me, but russian roulette scenes were so well made they hurt to watch.
  • April 12, 2008
Probably the most complete movie I've ever seen. Rich character development and stunning performances by everyone involved. Streep+De Niro= Chem 101
