This movie created a new found respect for Leonardo and to this day is one of my favorite actors. Every movie he's been in I love. and then theres Matt Damon, who always seems to play a backstabbing shyster. This movie also proves that Scorsese hasn't lost his edge and probably ne...( read more)ver will.
I hope Shutter Island will keep that stigma going.

The only Best Picture Winner on my list, and the film that finally gave Scorsese that long overdue Oscar!.This is more than an Irish "Goodfella's".It is a crafty, and well acted Crime film that isn't made any more!.

    OK, not great, but OK.
  • November 13, 2009
Scorsese is already one of the most overrated directors of crime filmmaking. This is nowhere near the brilliance of the original and masquerading such an obvious fact with a millionaire-budget cast is not the solution. It provides tons of fun and the unoriginal screenplay has som...( read more)e bright moments, but audiences should open their eyes once in a while and see a film with the proper analysis... The amazing times of Mean Streets (1973) and Taxi Driver (1976) are over.

After having seen the second half of this movie twice on a plane before I was able to see the entire movie, I was impressed even then. On seeing the complete film, I was even more impressed. Scorsese is an amazing director, and with a wonderful cast and well-thought out storyline...( read more) this is one of the cleverest cop movies I've seen.
DEFINING SCENE ~ Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen's first interview with Leonardo Dicaprio - Wahlberg's fiery style gets you giggling yet intimidated at the same time

Possibly Scorsese's best work, but that is a big call. I loved Leonardo's emotionally distubred Costigan, Queenan and Dignam's good cop/bad cop duo, Jack reliving the same sanity level experienced in Kubrick's 'The Shining'. However, the character that stood out to me was Sulliva...( read more)n. Seeing Matt Damon playing the bad guy for a change was an experience. Good intensity, good dialogue and brilliant camera angles.

    What a fantastic film!
It is such a great remake of the Chinese film, Internal Affairs. It has unbelievable writing that keeps the film rolling up and down a fast-paced roller coaster ride that's full of twists and surprises. DiCaprio is sublime, along with pretty much the rest ...( read more)of the cast, but Nicholson is also in top shape, along with Mark Wahlberg. Martin Scorsese was long overdue for an Oscar and this might be the film to give him that Honorary Oscar-- don't get me wrong! I liked The Departed, but Scorsese did deserve it for other of his older classics like Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull. Even so, Scorsese antes up his game along with Monahan's sharp adapted screenplay that gives the characters some damn good excuses to cuss the hell out of each other.
This is by far one of the best movies of 2006. Though not the best for me, it is still a highly remarkable one.

This may not be for everyone but this is the one movie that I could put on and no matter where it's at I could watch it all the way through. Most movies put me to sleep after seeing them so many times but not this one.

It was about fricking time Scorcese won a Best Director Oscar. Though I really felt this was not his strongest work, it was still light years ahead of what most is churned out of Hollywood these days. There's also a reason why this won the Best Picture Oscar. Scorcese's story tel...( read more)ling is at an all-time best in this one. A mind-blowingly good cast with Nicholson, Leonardo, Matt Damon and a stunning performance from Marky Mark Wahlberg, who somehow learned how to act. Bravo for you dude. Also one of Matt Damon's best performances.
  • October 16, 2009

Perfect cop movie. One of my favorites.
  • October 14, 2009
This movie was, by far, the best I've seen . I watch it over and over again, just because it was so good. Even the controversial ending, was perfect!
  • October 14, 2009
Excellent performances all around. A type of story, though, which doesn't necessarily give you a warm feeling about our society, though. Of course, even within the story, there are brave characters like Queenan who wouldn't give up the name of the informant and Costigan who gave...( read more) up having a real life in order to go undercover and do something to help society as a whole.

  • October 11, 2009
    better than the best...
  • October 11, 2009
The biggest critique that has been foisted on this is that its not as good as Goodfellas.

But lets be honest about this, despite what critical acclaim and cultural significance would have you believe, if you were left alone to judge Goodfellas for yourself, without anybody lo...( read more)oking over your shoulder expecting you to love the damn thing, I'd bet you would not conclude it was as fantastic as popular culture has deemed it to be.

Goodfellas is a very intelligent, very well made and obviously very good film, but I would strongly argue that it is not as great as its cultural status would have you believe (it certainly ain't no Godfather 1 or 2).

With this in mind; Yes, the Departed is not as good as Goodfellas, but it isn't that far behind either. It touches on similar themes, and while the end result is not as incendiary (perhaps too many weak links in comparison), it has alot going for it in the same way Goodfellas has.

What is initially striking (after the 2nd viewing - Ed) is the way the characters talk. When Goodfellas dialogue almost felt improvisational in the way it spilled from the characters, the dialogue in the Departed is significantly more sharp/astute, and feels quite unrealistic in comparison. It is entertaining however.

The big flaw for me is Dicaprio (from here on in to be known as whiney snotface). He spends most of the film with a whingey scowl on his face which is simply not convincing. not to mention irritating. Vera Farminga feels a bit wasted here also as 'the love interest'.

Matt Damon on the other hand really makes up for these aspects with his slimey and intelligent portrayal of Colin Sullivan, perfectly evoking the characters morally bankrupt charisma (and eventually desperation) as the film goes along. His performance really deserved more praise then it got (although some might consider it understandable seeing that the character is so unlikable). For me it was the best performance of the film.

While you can argue (quite reasonably) that Jack Nicholson in overacting psycho mode falls into self parody almost all of the time, he is still Jack Nicholson (who has buckets of charisma even when on autopilot).
    On the other hand,
he is still Jack NIcholson (rather then an actual underworld kingpin.)

The editing is playful. Despite the fact that the editor has been around for donkeys years, the cutting is full of energy and makes an interesting departure from conventional styles. The film also has 'Let it Loose' on the soundtrack. A big bonus.

Scorcese certainly hasn't lost it. But of course, you not being locked in a cupboard, you would know that.

THIS IS REALLY TWISTED very very good
  • October 10, 2009
A twisted and tortous film from the very beginning. This has got to be one of the best films I have ever seen. I do not usually watch a lot of DiCaprio films but I have to say this one blows "Catch Me if You Can" out of the water, one of his best roles yet! Also Jack Nicholson pl...( read more)ayed yet another sociopath, but with a twist, a sociopath who is also a drug dealer and a crime lord. Sort of like the Joker without the makeup and costume. The plot was extremely intresting and suspensful at the same time. I never got bored. So many twists and turns around every corner. I really like the good guy, bad guy contrast this movie gave and aroung 10 minutes till the end I thought I knew what was going to happen, and then BAM! The unexpected! You will never be able to guess the ending of this movie. I wished that the movie had a different ending but there really isn't much to complain about. But I did think that it was overkill when Sullivan got shot in the very end. Also the whole scene with the rat running across the windowsill was sort of a stupid pun. After Costigan was killed I was dying to see what was in the envelope he gave the therapist, but it was never shown! This was overall an excellant movie but I would no recommend it for children at all. Costello is a crime lord involved in nothing else but crime! All crime! He does drugs, had his women, kills anyone who gets in his way and is still protected by the government. The F word is used every other word and makes the Inside Man look like nothing. This movie contains 226 F words and at least six nice little hand gestures.
  • October 10, 2009
This movie was 2 hours of "Go fuck yourself" yet it was still memorable, I like this one much more than Infernal Affairs.
  • October 8, 2009
Manages to generate levels of suspense only the greatest filmmakers can accomplish.
  • October 7, 2009
    really nice. something new
  • October 6, 2009
what a compelling story this movie is. Leonardo Dicaprio was brilliant.
