Plot: Six wealthy people gather for a dinner party but never manage to sit down and eat.

want to see this because it won best foreign-language film at the oscars and best picture with the NSFC
More hilarity and weirdness from Don Luis. Similar concept as The Exterminating Angel, but more mannered and structurally loose. And that ending!
Ok this is getting a bit pretentious now....this film I don't fully understand but I like it. It's one of those films where stuff happens and then you think 'oh that's where so and so got the idea of etc from', just a really bizarre and eccentric film. Want to see more of this director's films...
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie is completely surreal and completely solid simultaneously. There is no way to tell what is real and what is a dream, or even who is dreaming, since dreams are nested within dreams. The film is punctuated by shots of the main characters walking down a featureless road, with no indication of where they are going or how long they must travel. The strangest things happen and are accepted without question. I found it fascinating.
Such a bizarre movie...I get sucked into watching it occassionally....not much of a plot really, but that's not the point....it shows the lives of the characters and their subconscious desires in a very interesting and unique way....very well done. I read a review a few years ago where the critic said that this one hasn't aged all that well, but I still love watching it....there's a strong sardonic sense of humor throughout that makes me laugh almost every time I watch it & the movie still holds together.

Luis Buñuel's my new hero.
Surrealism rocks.
Buñuel sets a bizarre and hilarious surreal black comedy about a bunch of decadent living deads. as usual, full of surprises from start to finish.
Imprescindible
"Six wealthy people gather for a dinner party but never manage to sit down and eat."
Now that could mean a number of things...
They all die, they all have gas... help us out?
This is my 3rd Luis Bunuel film in as many months, after Viridiana and Exterminating Angel, and I'm lost as a goose. Am I missing something? I keep expecting these films to wrap things up at the end, not necessarily normally but with some kind of closure. But all these seem like they ended because Bunuel just ran out of film and said "OK. That's good enough." I keep feeling like I fell asleep during the film and woke up just before the end. I keep reading that these films are hilarious. I don't find scenes of ghosts and revenge killings and bloodied bodies particularly mirthful. Can somebody help me "get it"?
kind of a black comedy, with some subtle historical hints. easy to watch, though at one point in kinda gets annoying with the repetition of events. but a good film, done in a very original style, with Bunuel's typically insane, torturing situations.
Bunuel is simply a master of the cinema, pulling out marvelous subversions without having to resort to cheap tricks or empty stunts. His films always get you a little off-balance, just enough to help you see how "unsane" the normal world generally is. This is one of his more accessible masterpieces, full of classic, timeless scenes. (They may not seem that way at first viewing, but once you see them, observe how they stick in your memory.)
Had I been born a generation earlier, Bunuel might have been my favorite filmmaker (well, after Kubrick).
My favorite from Buñuel. The plot sounds incredibly simple. Believe me it's not. Also includes some of the most terrifying nightmare sequences I've ever seen.
