My second fav Bertolucci... sometimes the first... The story is great, the soundtrack is marvelous, the cast is breathtaking and Paris is always Paris.
This film in other's hands could definetaly get close to the porn, but Betolucci has the magic and the talent to deal and work with "tabus" with such sensibility that they become art.
The Dreamers is an homage to the Cinema and to Paris.
"NAME THE FILM!"
This is a pretty new one, so alot of people may not be familiar with it. It's about an American boy who goes to Paris to attend college, and meets a French brother and sister who are ammorous movie fans, who befriend him instantly, allowing him to stay with them in their parents house.
"Weren't you just a tiny bit excited?"
An ambitious and exciting piece of work, a movie about sex and movies made by a filmmaker who understands the power of each to set off fantasy, create addiction, incite danger and transform the spirit. Bertolucci is one of the great painters of the screen.
It is odd, it is vague but it is brilliant !! The three characters share a passion for cinema but the siblings have different beliefs regarding other matters. There is a struggle between the dreamy world of the siblings and the more practical approach of their friend.
I have never watched a movie that was rated NC-17. I think the relationship that the brother and sister had was gross. They slept together naked. Michael Pitt is a great actor. They were naked almost half the time in the movie. Dicks and boobs, lol. The three of them were in the bath tub together and the girl had her period, she made the water red, that was disgusting.
It really isn't anything special. But its alright, I suppose. Eva Green is great in it, Louis Garrel is hot and Michael Pitt should not be allowed to act.
It's certainly not a masterpiece, lots of parts are annoying and Michael Pitt needs to die, but all those French Wave/film buff references make it simply adorable. Eva Green 4 world domination! Garrel's cute too.
Loved all those movie scenes from old movies. Very inspiring dialogs, but there are a lot of sick brother-sister relationship scenes. Still I think it's a wonderfull film.
Really odd film that i'm still not completely sure about. Most of the way through it borders on soft core porn and art. I think that Bernardo Bertolucci manages to keep it just on that line and no more. I must say that the film is very French. Still, when you get beyond those outrageous sex scenes it is a very good film. Michael Pitt is amazing as always as the awkward American. The chemistry between the three characters is very important to the essence of the film and they all did an excellent job with it. I can understand why people would not like this film. The average Flixster rating being about two and a half stars at the moment which I see as completely unfair as even if you didn't like it, it is by no means that bad. This film comes down to taste so I don't think no matter how many reviews you read on the film, they are all going to have different views on it so you should just watch it and make up your own mind.
An interesting film, I especially liked the odes to cinema and the parts about the Paris riots of 1968. The rest was somewhat average and it did seem to lose it towards the end.
This movie is twisted. I'm not really sure how comfortable most people are with brother and sister sharing the same guy - especially when it they are sharing together. It kinda skeeves me out.
me gusto mucho esta pelicula, aparte de que habla de lo que pasaba en paris en el 68 y porque tambien tiene una direccion muy bonita! :). Me fasina mucho que relaciona muy bien las escenas con otras escenas de la pelicula!
While the content is very mature, confusing and disturbing at times, this is not a bad film at all. Having someone as good looking as Eva Green nude throughout the film helps too I guess. Seriously, she looks stunning. I doubt I'd have seen this film if Eva wasn't in it actually.
There's a lot of interesting discussions which arise from this film. I've even seen some people going as far as to suggest that incest (brother and sister in this film's case) is acceptable and that there's nothing wrong with it. Check out the imdb forums.
question, why does matthew pee in the sink all the time? this movie is some serious brother sister love, and i thought for sure there would be a gang bang...but there wasn't.
great film about a group of cinephiles who find each other during a turbulent time in the 60s. loses focus after the first 40 minutes...but leaves an imprint on you after you watched it. plus it makes you want to see all the films mentioned in this even more or discover them for the first time... good showcase of new wave french directors .. but one thing i dont understand is why is the one character always pee in the sink?
I do understand the tribute, but I just don't think it's as good as everyone claims it to be. The constant references to the different silents and classics and so on seemed to be hastily implanted, which discombobulated the 'substance' for me. The only thing that seemed to have purpose was the explicit sex and the anomalous friendship, but even that becomes distorted and contrived toward the end. I'm willing to forgive just for the last scene: the aperture used to film it was superb. I only wish I could have the same positive aspect for the rest of "The Dreamers." Maybe it's the accustomed boundaries that we have in our real worlds that makes me dislike this. ...There's a limit to everything.
Bertolucci's blatant, unique film is anchored by his strikingly passionate vision and a trio of superb performances. This is an extremely strong, intelligent film in terms of writing. There's something classical and beautifully edgy about this story. It's every bit as involving and challenging as Bertolucci's renowned classic, Last Tango in Paris. Meticulously shot and cast with a sure hand, this is a gorgeous film to look at. This is a spectacularly original, heartbreaking depiction of the power of love and cinema. Everything about this film oozes beauty.
Very interesting film. The 60s backdrop was facisinating and the characters were potrayed brilliantly by the young cast. The dialouge was excellent with some great lines and the clips of the old movies sandwhiched in-between was a great idea. I'd say its probably better then the book, which is rare. The ending was a bit odd and they should have kept the original ending with Theo & Isabelle in the cinmea. The constant nudity was a bit off-putting and really not nesscary.
For a study of obsessive sexuality featuring copious unconcerned, character-inappropriate nudity, this film is flawlessly styled. It took me two years of rampant dedication to track down that red beret and I'm still looking for the green velvet dress coat.
The concept is intriguing - though a bit centered on sexuality - and the cast and setting great. This is the kind of movie that you'd watch because of how well it is done, and way less for the message. Definately style over content.
