Plain and simple, this is one of the greatest films I've ever seen. The cinematography in this picture is something a viewer can only dream of seeing. The wilderness, the characters, the conflict, all of it is pitch perfect.
The Edge is a deep, rich character study disguised as an action thriller. I just wish people could see past the average ratings and watch this with an open mind. I am very proud to have this in my collection, and I feel like a better person for having watched it. The Edge impacted me emotionally more than any other film has in years. I have great respect for this movie and I admire the performances more than anything. This is one of my all-time favorites. Remarkable.
Anthony Hopkins has an inablitiy to be a bad actor. Everything he does is just brilliant. Baldwin, while not as flawless, does carry his weight in this one. The Edge is perhapse the best survival-type movie ever made.
Good movie... Anthony Hopkins played his role powerfully in the film. Genre of the movie is action & adventure but I think It's full of anxiety and horror. I like it.
For all the talent in 'The Edge' (Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin) I have to say I was more then a little bit disappointed with it. It's not really a bad film, it just never resembles anything remotely original. Anthony Hopkins is good as always playing a powerful yet kind millionaire stranded in the woods with his wife's photographer played by Alec Baldwin (who I felt really phoned in his performance). The two go on a helicopter ride to find a man out in the middle of the woods (in the middle of winter, no less) and their helicopter crashes and the pilot and co-pilot die on impact leaving Hopkins and Baldwin stranded god-knows-where in the middle of snowy woods. Also stranded with them is Baldwin's assistant played nicely by the funny Harold Perrineau. The three have to fight to stay alive while they look for a way out. There's some action, but not much. The film usually relies on the powerful emotional drama that because of the poor writing is few and far between. 'The Edge' makes for a so-so way to kill two hours. In my opinion, it should have been a made-for-TV movie. The caliber of this film really wastes the talent of the two lead actors. Film Grade: C
this movie is amazing... Writer David Mamet created two engrossing and memorable characters, played by Alec Baldwin as the urbane fashion photographer and Anthony Hopkins as a reserved and intellectual billionaire. They find themselves teamed up against a giant Kodiak bear, and their own inner demons, when lost together in the Alaskan wilderness. There is a lot going on in this picture, as the subject matter includes male rivalry, the isolationism of extreme wealth, and, most conspicuously, the survival of the fittest. Mamet's script, which sounds a little too arch in spots, is well served by New Zealand director Lee Tamahori, who knows how to capture beauty and brutality in one frame. Although the themes are enormous in scope, they are well balanced. One rarely overpowers the other, nor does the achingly beautiful scenery overshadow the acting. Even if you do not like the intellectualism of the dialogue, there are some great scenes with the bear.

Mr Hopkins and Mr Baldwin did some of their finest work in this high brow thriller with a nature twist. If you havent seen it you missed a great movie with layers of emotional ups and downs.
The first time I viewed this movie, I thought of it as yet another "pitted against nature" type film. Then, I watched it a second time, then a third. Underneath, this is a very good movie with many hidden agendas. You see new ones with each viewing. It is violent, so descretion on audience is advised. But, it is very very well done and worth the watch.
splendid movie! what i liked most is the point about how to value people !i just find it interesting to combine such a theme with hilarious scenes in an action movie! you really should not miss it!
Phenomenally real action picture with two unlikely leads: it remains Hopkins only true action role, and Baldwin effects a camp voice in parts. The title sequence is the best I have ever seen for a multitude of reasons, and the writing, from Mamet's furious pen, is unsurpassed by anyone working in Hollywood today. The only film better written than this, I think, is Chinatown. Has a devastating final act: if you've bought the rest of it like I did you'll feel the bottom of your stomach drop out at the close. Yes, only Hopkins could have pulled it off and the finish makes one wonder whether he could have played Gandalf better than McKellen.

Anthony Hopkins is a hoot in this.....and you gotta love bear action. The big battle between the bear and them is exhilirating (and frightening) to watch. Love it when Hopkins says "today, we're going to kill the m*****f****** bear" lol
This is another splendid film which had me intrigued start to finish. The chemistry between the two, Anthony and Alec is mesmerising. That bear is a bad ass he deserves alot of credit too, made me laugh how evil he could be. Wants his food, although hunter hunted is turned on its head. I love Anthony Hopkins! He's such a great actor ! When he's in some move, you can be sure that it's gonna be great. This is one of the best thrillers-dramas I've ever seen!
a little farfetched and seemed too short...most of it was ehhh but any scene where there was a bear it was exciting and that made the movie sumwhat successful!
