Set in North Africa and Italy during the late 1930's and early '40's, The English Patient is an epic drama of two haunting love stories that unfolds against a background of international upheaval. Thr...( read more  read more... )ough the prism of war, and of love and friendship, various themes -- of fidelity, adultery, nationality and betrayals -- are dramatized and explored. The story, based on Michael Ondaatje's Booker Prize-winning novel, is told elliptically, through the histories of four characters who find themselves in a ruined monastery in Italy at the end of World War II. Slowly they reveal themselves and, in the process, the true identity of the English patient -- the unknown survivor of a plane shot down over the Sahara who lies dying in the monastery -- is made clear. Passion fires these stories, whether it is the raw passion between lovers, or the compulsive passion which drives men to explore remote and inhospitable regions, or to pursue across time and countries those they think have wronged them.

i have been wanting to watch the movie for sooo long! I read the Novel and I like the movie more for several reasons. One its easier to understand what finnally happened @ the end. In the Novel they never really tell you what happened @ the villa after the discover who the Englis...( read more)h Patient is, the just skip ahead 30 some years! I did not like that at all! Second, there seemed to be more on Kathrine and Almasy. I love that story soo much and it seems that it wasnt spent as much time on as it should have been. In the Novel they spent tooo tooo much time on Kips story wich was completely irrelavent! while as Caravaggio's story was important to was happened with Almasy and some of the other characters. Juliette Binoche is always top notch! as was the guy who played Caravaggio...i forgot his name...He was excelent as well. Thats just how I pictured that character.
Then we have Ralph Fiennes...WHY HAS HE NOT WON AN OSCAR!!! with This performance ontop of his amazing portral in Schidlers list, He really really deserves one and I cannot beleive that he didnt win for either of those Roles. He is an Amazing actor with GREAT RANGE!! not to mentions smoldering sexy eyes! ;) I just love hime and wish he would be more aknowledged that he is.
p.s. The scenery was BREATH TAKING! Such amazing Cinnematography!

May i first start by saying my deepest condolences to Director Anthony Minghella and how happy i am to have finally seen this masterful film that tells of love and redemption.

The English Patient is a beautifully accurate film that tells of a badly burned pilot who fails to remember his past. As the film progresses were treated to flashbacks that weave the story and we the audience attempt to piece the parts of the puzzle together.

Ralph Fiennes as Lazlo is fantastic as we see his passionate forbidden affair with Katharine in detailed memories. He's arrogant at first and yet his accent and personality is spot on.
His burnt self being a fine example of an audition for HP:Order of the Pheonix. But on a serious note his performance is incredible proving once again he's one of my fave and English actors.
Willem Dafoe also plays his character satisfactory along with the rest of the cast, liked seeing Naveen Andrews who I've seen in the series Lost, had no idea he was in this. His little romance with Juliette Binoche's Hana was cute and a nice addition to the movie's main plot.

The landscape, the settings North Africa & Italy are vast and grand to behold on the screen. Costumes i was impressed with, some cracking cinematography. The music also was perfect to accompany the visuals.

An intelligent film which is gripping emotional and has character's you grow attached too.

Him carrying her in the white shawl with the haunting music, now thats powerful. What a beautiful vision of love.

''In love, there are no boundaries.''

The English Patient starring Juliette Binoche, Kristin Scott Thomas, Colin Firth, and Ralph Fiennes is a very good film. I would strongly recommend this lovely film to people. This movie centers during the 1930's and 40's love affairs set in Europe.

I particularly enjoyed the storyline involving Naveen Andrews and Juliette Binoche. Seeing this film made me think of how great Ralph Fiennes would be in playing the role of Lawrence of Arabia if there ever was a remake.
