Moritz Bleibtreu, Christian Berkel, Oliver Stokowski

For two weeks 20 ...( read more  read more... )male participants are hired to play prisoners and guards. The 'prisoners' are locked up and have to follow seemingly mild rules, and the 'guards' are told simply to retain order without using physical violence. Everybody is free to quit at any time, thereby forfeiting payment. In the beginning the mood between both groups is insecure and rather emphatic. But soon quarrels arise and the wardens employ ever more drastic sanctions to confirm their authority.

The line between reality and role playing gets blurred in this creepy study of human behaviour. Only thing that keeps this from getting more stars is the pointless repetition of "what is the girlfriend doing?" scenes, which really didn't add a lot, with the exception of some bits...( read more) of info about the main character. Great performance by Moritz Bleibtreu, very solid leading man i must say.

A shame that the director has also bitten the hollywood chain of doing useless remakes. I guess he's the one swimming in a pool full of naked women right now, while i'm here writting this review :X

The picture here makes this movie look pretty silly. The guy looks like the older brother, from Everybody Loves Raymond. He doesn't look very happy about this so called "experiment" at all. I saw this movie, and it's actually really good, in a serious way, not in a silly way.

One of the great movie I've seen lately, the plot was really tight, well it was based on a true story... so it had to be tight ;), and the actors were almost all great :P
Seriously, it is incredible to know how the mind of some strangers works out in a group, while they think th...( read more)ey are being tested/controlled. A really great movie, really well made, Bravo!

I love this movie so so much! The chick is a bit of a creeper. I mean, honestly, if someone I barely knew told me they were living in my apartment, I'd be quite disturbed. I really can't say anything else that is negative about this film. It's one of my favourites!

A brilliant look at the abuse of power, and mans violent nature. The cases are looked at from all sides, but the director seems a little eager for us to pass judgement and really shock us. The end turns into average Hollywood action and slightly OTT. However it makes its point an...( read more)d isn't easily forgotten.

Interesting and intiguing (prison movies often are), but with a pretty bad implemented side story.

    Troublant. Dérangeant.
  • October 21, 2009
A very interesting and well made thriller that doesn't seem so unlikely.

S'il n'échappe pas à un sentimentalisme maladroit dans sa première partie, on ne peut cacher que le film excelle dans les tensions et qu'il place de façon plus qu'habile tout ce qui mènera au dernier acte, tout simplement épique.

it contains some terrible scenes, but it opened my eyes for psychological relations, although it's not made absolutely after Zimbardo's experiment. Fascinating!

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

What impressed me is how effective the movie was, even though the outcome is a foregone conclusion. full review

Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

Excels at building tension to an almost-unbearable point. full review
