The Fall

Aiden Lithgow, Catinca Untaru, Julian Bleach, Justine Waddell, Kim Uylenbroek, Lee Pace, Leo Bill

Languishing in a hospital, Roy Walker is a broken man in more ways than one: Unable to walk after a fall from a horse in a movie stunt gone wrong, his heart is also broken after his girlfriend ran off...( read more  read more... ) with the movie's leading man. Ready to end his life, Roy befriends five-year-old fellow patient Alexandria, with the goal of persuading her to stealing a fatal dose of morphine pills for him. Roy launches into a story that fuses patients, staff and others at the hospital with imagined personas and exotic lands. What he describes as "an epic tale of love and revenge" is so riveting to Alexandria that she will do whatever Roy asks in order to hear the next installment. The tale loosely mirrors the ill-fated love triangle that has left him heartsick and features Alexandria's favorite nurse Evelyn, as the beautiful Princess Evelyn; Sinclair, the movie star who stole Roy's girlfriend, as the detested Governor Odious; and Roy himself as the avenging Black Bandit who leads the attack on the governor with the help of a colorful posse that includes Alexandria as the Black Bandit's daughter. But as the story takes a darker turn, Alexandria begins to realize there is far more at stake than the fate of a handful of imaginary characters. It's up to Roy whether the Black Bandit--and Roy himself--will survive the climactic final scene.

Catinca Untaru, the little girl is the star of the movie. Beautiful images and colors. It takes a lot of effort to recall what the story was about, so it didn't really leave an impression.

The story of a little girl befriending an injured stuntman at an 1920s hospital is a fairy tale about the power of imagination and friendship. The film is shot entirely without digital effects, using colors, architecture, props and natural landscapes to create an cinematic beauty...( read more) rarely seen before. It actually makes you want to travel all those stunningly gorgeous places the heroes of stuntman Roy's story get to see. That this camera work and production design wasn't Oscar recognized is a shame. The plot smartly connects the fictitious adventure story of revenge against an evil governor with real Roy's attempt to get his small listener to bring him morphium. The chemistry between Lee Pace and little newcomer Catinca Untaru makes those scenes a pleasure to watch, especially thanks to the girl's natural and charming acting. All that combined makes for a wonderfully weird, yet beautiful and moving fantasy adventure. And the lovely ending is a love declaration to the profession of the stuntman and the magic of movies.

The girl is really something special (a little dynamo who upstages all her elders and betters at every turn), Lee Pace is as scrumptious as a toasted chocolate sandwich and the (quite literally) jaw droppingly exquisite visuals are about as blissful as having your eyelids licked ...( read more)by some mischievous angel.

I'm getting sick of saying the phrase,"a visual stunner",but unfortunately, this film is one.The images resonate like no other(now I did see it on a 61" LED screen on blu-ray,so..).It's like Terence Malick and Alejandro Jodorowsky got together with the intention of blasting our op...( read more)tic nerves right outta our heads.

This movie has the potential of a 5, but again and again you get interupted and anoyed, and it is also not as dark as it should be or as intricate... its to bad but hey, it was still visually awesome and the story wasnt that bad, clearly worth your time!

Plastically stunning with a wonderful photography, The Fall is also an incredibly imaginative, ambitious, overly self-indulgent piece of work about love - and little Untaru couldn't be any better or cuter here, she is amazing.
