Style over substance? Sure. But it's the most beautiful film you've seen in the last five years, and I've seen some beautiful movies. Definitely one for the big screen- go.
I have a good friend in the "industry" that always tells me to worry the more screenwriters a film has. This film had three, notoriously a bad sign. it even gets worse when two of those writers were involved in the old serial killer film, The Cell. The Fall is like a lot of hollywood actresses, super pretty, almost mesmerizing to look at, but so empty and vapid that you can't look for very long.
The worst part is that it's not a "horrible" film for most of the length of the movie. it's bad, but it has little moments of hope. But all that hope is dashed to pieces in the last 20 minutes which is so poorly written and executed that i wanted to punch myself in the face for coming to see this film.
It's kind of like being inside Aronofsky's head while he's at a Dali exhibit, on acid, and then watching "The Wizard of Oz." In a good way. Worth it just for the visuals, which are beyond stunning. Also worth it for Lee Pace, who is so open and real and desperate that he just makes you love him, hopelessly. The casting of a non-actor as the little girl actually sort of worked, because it made the dialogue between them utterly natural, often hilariously so. Sometimes the lines between reality and fantasy and metaphor and everything get so blurred that you don't know where you are and you feel sort of shut out as an audience member, but it's still worth the experience.
the cell was so awful i will never see another one of this guys films ever, ever, ever, ever. and yeah, i know the whole "it was the studio's fault" bullshit...not buying it. you fucked up, guy. you fucked up.
I thought the visuals in this movie were amazing and the screenplay was great. Some parts are funny, some are odd, and others are sad. My main problem with the movie was that I found the little girl to be very annoying. The movie is still really good, though.
