LETTERBOX. Su tratamiento es austero tanto en lo narrativo como en la propuesta visual, pero esto termina siendo una virtud. Debió ser un poco más corta y menos diluida. / Its treatment is austere both in the narrative and in its visual approach, but that ends up being a virtue. ...( read more)Should have been somewhat shorter and less diluted.

Watching Atanarjuat is almost like going back in time and watching life in biblical times. There is very little acting and even less cinematography - something which makes the movie tiring at times.
But despite this dullness, there is something very engaging about the story. An ...( read more)evil Shaman rocks a village, and the whole village takes it lying down until things become too unbearable. But this evil is not confined to a person or one family. It destroys the morality of everyone living in the village, even the family which is supposed to represent the 'good' and be 'saviors'. For even the Men and women of this family dishonor a long-made promise, cheat on their spouses, and on their brothers. However, they overcome these misgivings and the movie ends in the traditional victory of good over evil, as all mythical tales do. except that the victory is pacifist, somehow not at all in keeping with the rest of the story where violence seems to play a significant role.
But it is a different voice, and a voice which tells its story well.

This was good, though I would have cut 20 min from it. Would have made a tighter flick.

If only the evil in our lives could be pinned down to one specific wicked spirit that makes specific children of a specific family do wicked things. If only we could simply chant, tusk-shake, forgive and ban ourselves away from this external source of evil that ruins it for ever...( read more)yone else. If only the formula were that simple.
It could well be a bias on my part, but I'll most always find films which refuse to recognize the stark contrasts of light and darkness inside each one of us, to be inherently inferior. This film is no exception.
That aspect of it aside however, I found it to be rather enjoyable: The Inuit way of life is in the filmmakers' bones and it shows. This innate knowledge illuminates the beauty contained within the film, much as the sun illuminates it's sparkling landscapes. The crafty cameramen place the viewer inside the action without drawing undue attention to their work. The actors are very well selected and each turns in an outstanding performance. All in all, worth a look-see.
