Seen Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood? Thought he was good? Me too, till I saw Richard Harris in this. The film itself is very good but it's Harris' stunning performance that grabs you and holds you taught right to the very end when it seems as though even the film can't k...( read more)eep up with him. This is the finest and most powerful performance by an actor I have ever seen. Outstanding.

King Lear in a bog. But better then that sounds.

Based on the stage play of the same name, itself inspired by real events that took place in Kerry in 1959, the film has pretty firm parochial roots. Its also buttered up by a presentation that is occasionally too 'Oirish' for i...( read more)ts own good.

There is a feeling of archaic-ness, that it glosses over something with its theatrical representation of country folk, but still, it has some powerful moments, usually when the Bull McCabe is onscreen.

Richard Harris gives a towering performance as Bull (garnering his second and final oscar nomination) and John Hurt is barely recognisable (in a good way) as 'Bird' O'Donnell.

An improvement on the play as well.

P.s. If Roger Ebert ever stumbles upon this, Sean Beans character is spelt 'Tadhg,' and he isn't meant to be retarded. hohoho

Shows a young Sean Bean. You see him go from being a shy young man growing into being a man who finally stands up for himself.

As far as I'm concerned this is a truely great story. It doesn't move very quickly and there isn't much to see from one scene to the next but it has a power that I thought was great!
If I see it for sale I'm grabbing it.

Richard Harris at his best. A good movie to watch if you're in the mood for good drama and good acting.

One of the greatest irish plays ever written, I studied it in school and I thought that this adaptation was brilliant. Strong performances from Sean Bean, Richard Harris and John Hurt.
