The Forbidden Kingdom Reviews and Ratings

Suprisingly not completely rubbish. The first fight between Chan and Li is awesome - obviously they had it written in their contracts that neither can lose - I didnt count but am sure that they had the same amount of knockdowns!

A children's fantasy - so don't expect an epic t...( read more)o end all epics.

Nicely done - fun to watch - a few really good bits, a lot in one ear out the other.

I got this movie off the bargain rack at Blockbuster, so I wasn't expecting much. But h*ll, it had Jackie Chan and Jet Li, so I figured at the least I could pawn it off on my son if I hated it.

*Drumroll* I watch it more than he does! I put it on the other day and my son whine...( read more)d, "Mommy, again?!" I told him that this was an educational film and that if he didn't clam up I was going to make him do some homework. Hmmph. Pesky kids! That took care of him, lol.

But in all seriousness, we both love this movie and watch it, like, every day. The choreographed fighting scenes are the business! Plus there are many funny jokes throughout. Basically, some punk kid from Boston has to return a special staff to an Immortal in ancient China. As usual, this 'savior' is not even Chinese. (Think 'The Last Samurai' and 'The Mexican'.) They make a joke about this too in the movie, and that's what really made me fall in love. Check it out!

  • April 28, 2009
I watched this and I'm still not sure what to think of it. The movie just seemed...odd.
  • April 28, 2009
The missing link between '00s wushu, '80s kids' fantasy and '70s chop-socky, this manages to be thoroughly entertaining - and the face-off between Chan and Li is worth the entrance price alone.
  • April 28, 2009
This was cool! That teenager BS needs to stop!
  • April 24, 2009
This film was ok really i mean jet li and jackie chan are masters of the martial arts so it was impressive and not a disappointment the storyline was ok but i was boring in places but i guess its qorth a watch!!
  • April 23, 2009

    Goof-ups: couple blatant botch-ups

wow slightly unexpected because of the reviews but i like went through all those kung-fu movies at teenage age(heaps of) and thought this added something quite extra.

Keeping long combat sequences with obvious entertaining effect intended (Chan) and mirror level skill (Li) diff...( read more)erent only to my favs of by gone days...
    oowhhoooohwwwaa whoooha! lol whaa!
...by the addition of the element of fantasy, as such more like Monkey Magic but...better somehow, if you liked that, it is a lil genre of its own but will not die... (immortals/demi-Gods) for some fans.

What G/PG rating is`nt thought provoking but this classic with:

..."Hand over the weapon ...or die"
    or
..."Martial arts is deception, My friend".
In the sense that 'to pull away THEN come at the opponent, in fear and/ 'OR' aggression is instinct according to your culture, 'wise'. But to only just 'come at opponent' is too trusting/faithfull (too often the western way) and a sign of one whom only takes orders.

i thought the bad boy is not bad because he wears the crusifi9x (that carries the holy book). The boy is only somewhat bad because he carries the cross and not the book.
my own meanderings i`m eccleasiastic not athiest haha yet or neither or both.

The movie has a wobbly start. The main character - Jason, is a fanatic of martial arts movies who gets attacked by a gang of guys, but before he realises what's going on, he gets transported to China.

That's when the story gets good. Jason's mission is pretty much to return a...( read more)n ancient magical stuff back to its owner - The Monkey King, who is one of the immortals trapped in stone. On his journey he meets some allies who help him.

Michael Angarano does OK in a role of Jason. I won't say he's a strong lead and his performance does not exactly shine, but he does his part.

Jackie Chan contributes to some really awesome fight sequences in the movie, in articular the one against Jet Li's character. He also contributes to most of the laughs, because his character likes to drink a lot of wine and his fighting style is pretty much the same.

Jet Li plays a silent monk who is very mysterious and seems to have a mission of his own. He joins the team as his goals seem to be very similar to theirs. Just like Jackie Chan, he contributes to some of the awesomest fight sequences in the movie. He also plays The Monkey King whose fighting style is very entertaining to watch.

Yifei Liu and BingBing Li are two very nice looking actresses, both of whom play really cool characters. Yifei Liu plays a great supporting role as an orphan who wants revenge on the Jade Warlord - the main antagonist. She does have a pretty good chemistry with Jason. Bingbing Li plays one of the coolest female villains ever, in my opinion anyway. Her fighting style is very elegant and enjoyable to watch.

Collin Chou plays the Jade Warlord, the villain of the film. He does OK. I understood that his character was supposed to be very harsh and deceptive, but I don't think they showed enough of it in the film.

Overall it's a good cast. The movie mostly shines in its fight scenes. I can't choose a favourite one because most of them are impressive. So if you're a fan of martial arts movies, especially the ones with Jet Li and Jackie Chan then you should give this film a try, but if you're not then you might not like it. Even though the film does have some deep themes and overall leaves you feeling good at the end. So long as you can forget the idea that the main character gets transported to China miraculously then you'll like it.

Somewhat thin on storyline, but terrific fun.

  • April 15, 2009
Finally a movie with Jet Li and Jackie Chan together! I liked the movie, it was cool! But I still want to watch a movie of them really fighting against each other.
  • April 15, 2009
Awesome awesome awesome, not much more to say it's juat AWSeOME!!!!!!
  • April 12, 2009
Good idea overall putting Jet Li and Jackie Chan together. Bad idea putting an American teenager in the mix. The Li/Chan fight scenes were a true work of art. The chicks in this flick are very easy on the eyes. Get rid of the round eye and you got a much better movie.
  • April 12, 2009
man jackie chan is getting old....
  • April 10, 2009
Awesome Finally Jackie Chan and Jet Li fight. 8/10.

  • April 8, 2009
Awesome, I mean Jackie Chan, Jet Li in one movie? And Angarano's brilliant, fits the character like icecream in my mouth.
  • April 8, 2009
    tupical fighting movie
  • April 7, 2009
Damn, how do you get two martial arts superstars and make a movie that SUCKS? I will tell you how. The story is recycled and it is targeted towards kids. Just not enjoyable.
  • April 6, 2009
Hmmmm the usual curious mystic honk kong phooey chop sockey spiritual action flick based in the Orient. What can I say...it looks lovely with beautiful green vistas and magical splashes of light and sorcery....but the story is the usual weird and wonderful mess which is kinda uno...( read more)riginal and boring. Its the usual wizards, martial arts, magic and evil henchmen by the numbers haha

The heroes (Jackie and Jet) train and make a martial arts expert outta of useless 80's lookin American kid who somehow travels to another world of mystic wizards and monkey kings and of course..manages to save it no worries. Surprise surprise hehe.

there's nothing special here atall really...its all been see before and is rather cliched.chan and li are good together for sure but they need to do something more original.
  • April 6, 2009

  • April 5, 2009
this Jet Li and Jackie Chan pairing is sort of anticlimactic and just a little too late to came
  • April 4, 2009
Funny with great action, it's about time the two best martial art actors meet. Michael Angarano holds up his end and makes for a fun exciting movie.
  • April 3, 2009
God, finally! Jackie Chan and Jet Li together. And it's everything we've been waiting for!!!
  • April 3, 2009
Pretty lame acting/story. The fight scenes are the only thing that kept me watching.
  • April 2, 2009
A really great martial arts tribute that is extremely satisfying to Jackie Chan/Jet Li fans.
  • March 31, 2009
