The Fourth Kind Reviews and Ratings

Story was ok...a couple of scenes did make me jump out of my seat, so they get kuddos for that. Been a while since any movie had that effect on me.

A very unsettling and disturbing drama which is supposedly based on alien abduction cases in Alaska which took place in 2000. It's played out like a documentary mixing real and recreated footage making the viewer think that what's going on did actually take place. It's up to you ...( read more)to believe that or not (I don't). It's very clever the way the filmmakers did it though. The movie is downright creepy with some scenes very harrowing because it feels so real. Do yourself a favor and check it out. It will scare the living daylights out of you.

Okay so I thought this movie was going to attempt to scare me. Then as I watched it I started thinking what a weird way to piece together a film. By the end I was freaked out. Actually had trouble sleeping, hopefully not because of the creepy reasons explained in the film.LOL

There are four kinds of alien encounters. The fourth kind is abduction.

A so-so faux docudrama about a fourth kind of close encounters that Steven Spielberg himself never delved into.

In 1972, the book The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry by J. Allen Hy...( read more)nek was released. In it, Hynek, an astronomer and UFO researcher, stated several different encounters with unidentified flying saucers or extraterrestrial life. In Nome, Alaska, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler believes that the residents of this town have been experiencing inexplicable encounters. She believes that these encounters are linked to the profound number of residents who have become classified as missing since the 1960s. Her findings relate to the first four kinds of close encounters that were originally conceived by J. Allen Hynek. A close encounter of the first kind is when a UFO is sighted. A close encounter of the second kind is when the physical effects of a UFO are observed. A close encounter of the third kind is when contact is made with extraterrestrial beings. Up until this point, alien observations or contact is not horrifying. It only can become a nightmare when the alien beings abduct a human being, in what is known as a close encounter of the fourth kind.

The Fourth Kind is a film in the vane of The Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity. All are shot in a fake documentary style that the filmmakers hope will send chills throughout every inch of your body. Prior to its release, The Fourth Kind was being marketed as a film based on real events, with real never before seen footage that'll make you question your beliefs. I was one of the poor souls who believed that the film I was watching in the theatre had some reality in it. However, as I investigated afterwards, I found out that the film is nothing but a load of horse shit. Even though the film is yet another tall-tale, it doesn't mean that the director doesn't try as hard as hell to convince you otherwise.

The film is directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, who also is seen in the film as himself, interviewing the skeletal Abigail Tyler. The actress who portrays the "actual" Abigail Tyler looks a lot like the Scream mask or an actual alien herself. Osunsanmi is a largely an unknown to the screen with The Fourth Kind, and he puts together a film with an interesting idea and even manages to lash out a few shock scares. His choice for a creepy, alien/Sumerian voice is also shocking but it won't stay with you much longer after the credits have rolled. Osunsanmi's failure with this film is a tedious and boring first hour that leaves the view lost, uninterested, and simply not terrified. The appearance and metaphor of a white owl seen on screen isn't enough to make some lose their marbles for a film that has a eerie poster and a guerrilla marketing campaign behind it.

The main character, and reel Abigail Tyler, is played by the resident of evil, Milla Jovovich. Jovovich does a good job in her role as the psychologist looking for answers and continuing the work of her deceased husband. She assisted by Abel Campos (Elias Koteas) and Awolowa Odusami (Hakeem Kae-Kazim). The same can not be said for the local authorities, who operate under the leash of Sheriff August (Will Patton). Overall, the acting by the main cast is good. To me, they provided the portrayal and emotions necessary for their characters in this uneven movie.

When the scares happen, they are good, and your mindset will be tested in this film at first, only if you are believing it is all real. For folks who love The X-Files, The Outer Limits, and films that are from a genre that The Fourth Kind is part of, than you will enjoy watching this movie. If you don't, then don't expect to see anything more than a slow starting alien horror flick that has no actual aliens on-screen.

This movie was shocking me from begin to end!
  • December 9, 2009
I can't decide how I feel about this movie. It's a brilliantly innovative idea that was executed with the grace and finesse that a six-year-old could have brought to the screen. Some parts were genuinely scary, but this comes nowhere near the scare-factor that Paranormal Activity...( read more) produced. I'm very torn with this movie.

This movie could have been quite better if it had been done differantly. If they had just shown the "real" footage and interviews instead of mixing it with the filmed Holloywood stuff then it would be a bit more believable. Either that or put it all during the credits to make you...( read more) think maybe it was real after all. Instead your constantly thinking, "If they can fake it THIS way, then how am I supposed to believe that they didn't fake the real stuff too?". That and the archive footage was all scarier then everything else. No offense to Jovovich, but the actress they got to play the "real" Abigail Tyler was way more frightening then she was. That woman could have been onscreen for the whole movie and would have been scarier then what they did.
The acting isn't terribel by the credited cast, but the real talent was in the uncredited people who protrayed the "real" versions of them. They certainly make it all seem real while you watch the movie.
Story has some good stuff too it and like I said, if they had gone a differant direction then this might have been the scariest alien movie since SIGNS. Yet it didn't quite make it. Instead they threw in some creepy owls and camera effects to try and make you jump out of your seat. There is a good creepy feel throughout the whole film (what if it's real, what if it's fake, ect. ect.), but my butt never left the theater seat so it didn't really scare me.
It did manage to pull my leg though, because the "real" archive footage manages to look real and seems like something you would see on THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL in one of their alien shows. Then I checked at this little bit of info on imdb.com-
"According to promotional materials from Universal, the film is framed around a psychologist named Abigail Tyler who interviewed traumatized patients in Nome. However Alaska state licensing examiner Jan Mays says she can't find records of an Abigail Tyler ever being licensed in any profession in Alaska. Ron Adler, CEO and director of the Alaska Psychiatric Institute and Denise Dillard, president of the Alaska Psychological Association say they've never heard of Abigail Tyler"
Yet again Hollywood gave us their version of a "true" story that was no more real then anything else they've given us in the last few years. Yet this film manages to be a good leg puller and the "real" stuff will make you second guess your beliefs, but won't need to under-go hypnosis to realize Hollywood got you once again

"It cannot be God....but it can pretend to be."

DURING CREDITS: During the credits what might be "real" reports of UFO sightings are played.

Great movie. Too bad it was made a hoax. Very well done though. All I know is that when I saw this in theaters, everyone, including myself were left frozen in our seats at the end of the movie. Something must have been right. Definitly see it though.

Heard it was scary...then heard it wasn't. The fact that they show actual footage of the interviews, makes me curious. The seen where he's being raised off the bed and the ancient language being spoke both caught my interest. Even though its propaganda. Trying to take the attenti...( read more)on away from 2012. What with it's 'This could really happen' marketing strategy. Oh well it's still quite the selling point.
So now I'm hearing that the so-called 'actual footage' is all a hoax to get people to buy tickets. I knew there was something fake about the supposed 'real' doctor. She just seems too conveniently creepy, and young! To be a practicing psychiatrist and hypnotist by the age of what, 30? Possible but not probable. She looks even younger than that! Also try looking up the real story online to find this footage with a credible source. Good luck! Still wanna see it though.
