A brother and his older sister are looking after the homestead when the parents are away, and end up opening up a nasty hole in their backyard. There's lots of little creatures which come out and battle the kids. A decent enough 80's kids' horror flick, which had impressive speci...( read more)al effects the year it was made. I never got too scared, but there was fun action.

A classic in the eighties genre of horror. First, the pre-CGI special effects are pretty amazing, including, but not limited to, the intensely creepy "minions" which were stunning in the late eighties and remain so today. Add to that the casting of actual teens and preteens, and ...( read more)then allow them to behave more or less as actual teens and preteens would under the circumstances, then augment with some really nice subtle touches.

This just goes to show what mischief little kids get into when you leave them on their own.

Giving this one the benefit of the doubt -- I saw it once, in the theatre when it was first release and can remember very little about it. Two stars is probably being kind.

Creepy for kids. You may laugh at it when you grow up (like me) but it definitely works for the young viewer. Avoid the sequel, though.

Loved this when I was young, and it's still good!

This movie creeped me out as a child, but I was drawn to it everytime it showed. A young Dorff. I really didn't remember who he was until Blade. After that movie, I jumped back in time to his movie roster. I missed out on him since this film. Watching The Gate now, it does have s...( read more)ome cheesy acting, but the horror is still spot on when it appears. I still remember the dead dog scene. That one always got me.

was pretty cool till the aliens came and then it was kind of lame

Not bad for what it is - a kid horror movie rated PG-13. Interesting to see a very young Stephen Dorff.

Excellent underrated supernatural Canadian horror cult fave! Stephen Dorff makes his debut before he was in Blade as he plays a young boy with his best friend who discover that a hole in their backyard is a gate to hell but they must shut it before it's too late.
