Having brought home to Athens the Olympic victor's laurel ...( read more  read more... )crown, Philippides joins as commander the Sacred Guard, which is expected to defend the city-state's liberty, a year after the chasing of the tyrant Hippias. Athenian supporters of Hippias conspire, hoping to side Philippides by marriage to Theocrites' expensive servant Charis, and thus neutralize the guard. She fails to seduce him, as his heart is already taken by a young girl before the learns her name is Andromeda, daughter of Creuso. Everything personal is likely to be put on hold when the news breaks that the Persian King of kings Darius's vast army is marching on Greece, hoping its internal division will make its conquest a walk-over. Theocrites reproaches Miltiades to hold back the sacred guard to defend the Pallas temple after a likely defeat, and proposes instead to negotiate terms with Darius, but is told an alliance with Sparta could save the Hellenic nation. Philippides makes the journey and survives a fiendish attempt on his life by conspirators; he returns with Sparta's engagement during the Persian attack in far greater numbers on Militiades valiant troops. Charis, left for dead after overhearing Darius's orders, reaches the camp to tell that the Persian fleet, now commanded by traitor Theocrites, is heading for Piraeus to take Athens. Miltiades sends Philippides ahead to hold out with the sacred guard until his hopefully victorious troops arrive, and after his perilous journey back they do a great job, proving superior athletes can do better then traditional naval ramming tactics ..

    The version I watched was The Film Crew's commentary track, which has some great bits and makes the oiled men wrasslin' go by slightly faster, but overall this is still a pretty poor film.

    Worth a look if you grab the comedy version, otherwise I'd say take a pass on this one, th...( read more)e significant directors involved don't come close to making this worthwhile.

    The Film Crew is really increasing my knowledge of Bava. I can't wait to get to Danger: Diabolik after this streak. (Where's that, Rhino?)

    Okay, this movie sucks. (Outside of the commentary, which, as usual, is a bit of fried gold.) But there were moments of inter...( read more)est. Yes, the fight scenes went on way too long, but some of that underwater crap was kind of fun to watch from a special effects point of view. But outside of some cool spearings, this movie is almost completely ridiculous and impossible to follow. I know the story of Marathon. The guy is supposed to drop down dead after running (by the way, there and back...), not go fight a sea battle and win the girl. Greek history isn't that wonderful and joyful. But apparently, sometimes we just have to accept what's presented to us, so that's what I dealt with on this movie.

    What's really funny about this print of the movie is the dubbing. Watching a lot of MST3K, I'm used to seeing a lot of bad dubbing. This might take the cake. It's pretty common to see long monologues in Italian shortened down to one sentence with the rest in silence.

    Trust me, only watch the Film Crew version. You'll feel better in the morning.
