Plot: A teenage boy steals a car in order to go on a road trip to find his long-lost brother and tell him that their mother has died. The boy ends up finding his brother and himself as well.
there is something about this film that really moved me, just like a pleasing and nightmarish dream.
I didn't like it at first but it drew me in with some unique and interesting techniques and then became kind of charming for it's quirkiness.
I can't quite put my finger on it, but something about this movie was really weird. Yes, I know it's often compared to number of movies of the so-called "quirky" genre. Yes, it's a road movie with bunch of colorful characters, and a lead who through getting to know them learns a lot about him self. There are even all those dream scenes that look as if young Gilliam had made them (which means a lot when I say it). But somehow, I never got the felling that this character is really going anywhere. He said at the beginning that he felt stuck, and wanted to get away. Whole movie, to me felt as if he never moved from his bicycle, and imagined the entire thing away. Then again, there was no reason to assume that is correct.
I guess I couldn't escape this impression, as I recognized my self in there, and I'm exactly the type of person who wants to turn things around, and never does. The light and the camera only contributed to this feel.
As for acting, at first I was shocked how Jena Malone, who is always so damn good, sucked here. Then it just clicked in place when you get to know her a bit better. She's just so good, as she can still fool me so bad :) The other two leads are good, but got somewhat overshadowed by this trick. Rest of the cast I never saw before, so I don't really have much to say.
Enjoyable drama but even though it was only 93-minutes-long it felt like the road was never going to end.
What? Lou Taylor Pucci, Jena Malone and Zooey Deschanel together in one film? It could be about the three of them fighting fungus of the feet and I would still see this movie.
